Kane enlists the help of Logan, Kitty and Sharon to investigate the lab that the Roxxon executive had confessed about to the FBI

The firetrucks were still working on getting the blaze under control as the south wing of the Exxon facility began to collapse. Emergency teams moved purposefully, creating breaks and moving out the chemical assets and reserves on-site under the direction of white HAZMAT suited Roxxon staff. Police and other law enforcement were pretty much solely on perimeter duty, waiting for the fire to get under control before they could start questioning people. Fortunately, Kane’s badge quickly gave them access to a trio of HAZMAT suits of their own, as well as an emergency keycard. The nervous Roxxon executive who had contacted Duncan had also authorized their entry, and in minutes, they were in a basement lab.

Despite being only a hundred metres from the blazing south wing, there was nothing beyond the alarms to suggest anything was happening. The hallways and labs were sterile and separated by clear thick doors that broke the space up into dozens of sealed clustered. Kane swiped the final reader to the lab.

“This is not a look that works for me. Kitty, do you think this suit makes my ass look big?”

"Nope, just your head." She glanced over, hoping that the smoke didn't make it hard to phase. The smell was strong enough still to be distracting. Kitty pressed her sleeve against her nose, then remembered that she was supposed to look professional. She grimaced but let her arm drop. "So, where do we go from here, guys?"

"That's what I'd like to know." Sharon interjected, shaking her arm a little in the hope the Hazmat suit would settle somewhat better. "What exactly are we looking here for, Agent Kane?"

"Supposedly, the blast that hit this facility was an act of eco-terrorism. Despite their recent turn away from oil, Roxxon spent a lot of decades turning plenty of places into an oily slick. However, my boss got a call from their executive that a restricted lab was breached that contains a mutant that they were treating. Since that is technically illegal, they asked if we could secure it before SHIELD does. Apparently, they're worried that he'll be considered a weapon." Kane said as the lab doors slowly opened. "An FBI investigation doesn't allow us to just seize everything for our own use. SHIELD's does."

"What are the odds that we're going to experience a little interruption?" Kitty asked, frowning as she stepped into the lab. She didn't like the thought of butting heads with another agency. One was quite enough.

"We just need to be quick. If there's a mutant in here that needs treatment, we need to get a record so they can't disappear behind twenty levels of security clearance." Kane stopped as he walked into the lab. At the one end was a gaping hole in the wall. Not a crudely hacked out hole, but one that seemed like it had been burned through the wall and floor with a laser, making a roughly smooth circular tube from the room down into the darkness.

"What were they doing here?" Sharon looked around, surveying the equipment in the lab. Some of it was fairly obvious, but most of it was a riddle. Focal in the middle of the room was one very obvious thing though: some sort of containment unit. "There we go..." Sharon moved closer to examine it.

Logan didn't need the HAZMAT suit. His healing factor would take care of whatever they encountered down here but they needed to look like they belonged. The suit put a damper on every sense he had. It was like being in a fog. Pissing SHIELD off wasn't high on his priority list. They dealt with enough shit on that front already. But swooping in and fixing things before they got their hands on anything? He could live with that. He walked to one side of the unit and while the instruments had been updated he could still recognize what they were used for. "Looks like some kind of experimentin'. Got blood sample collection materials over here."

"There isn't anything here now. Maybe the experiment went down the hole." He hissed between his teeth. "If we're corralling something, we need some kind of way to secure it. Logan, you want to give Julian a call, see if he doesn't mind a field trip?"

"Yeah, sure." Logan pulled out his phone and scrolled through the contacts to find Julian's number. Good thing about Xavier phones. They always kept themselves updated. Some push update system that Summers and the techies had designed. He listened to the phone ring briefly then Julian picked up. "Hey, Keller, ya mind goin' on a field trip? We got a big, probably ugly, thing that needs corrallin'." After rattling off their location, he hung up and looked to the others. "He's on his way. Shouldn't take too long."
