Laurie checks in on Julian in the MedLab after the accident.
Laurie removed the spent IV bag from its frame and replaced it with a new one, placing the now empty one on the tray beside Julian's bed.
She was reluctant to wake him, given the trauma, but she had to check his vitals and make sure the pain relief they'd provided was enough.
"Julian," she murmured softly, a gentle hand placed upon his hospital gown clad shoulder. "You need to wake up now."
From where he was the journey to join the waking world was a slow one. In his dream he was still whole, and he and Tandy had been at her castle, just being together...and there had been a literal elephant in the room too, named Yorrick. His eyes fluttered open, thankful for the dimmed lights of the room but trying to shield his rapidly dilating pupils from the light that seemed to be coming from the doctor. "Wassit?" he muttered.
"It's Laurie," she said, reaching for one of his arms to get a pulse reading; only to stop and gently place her fingers against his throat instead. The bandages currently covering his wrists would make a good reading impossible. "You're in Medlab. Do you remember why?"
It was as much to get him talking as to gauge his current emotional state. She herself had tried to retreat after her injuries, and it hasn't helped a bit.
A beat of silence passed between them before Julian jerked his hand up to his head as if to muss his hair, only to have his arm stopped by the restraints that had needed to be put in place after this same thing had happened numerous times before. Realization struck and his demeanor turned dour, "Oh...right." The inhibitor collar on his neck was itching, "Could you take one of these off?" he indicated to the collar and the restraints.
Laurie hesitated for the space of a second before reaching up to slip the inhibitor collar off.
"Don't over strain yourself or we'll have to put it right back on," she warned.
His hair almost immediately turned a ghostly shade of green and stood straight up before doing what appeared to be the twist. "Ooooh, that's..." he sighed contentedly. The last of the pain killers were still making him pleasantly high as his hair faded back to its regular black. "I take it the gremlins have been at it while I've been out," he glanced at the collar.
"Just a few," Laurie responded with a pained smile, they'd had to collar him to make sure nobody got hurt but given her own issues with the power dampening technology, she didn't like to think on it too much. "What do you remember?"
"It's fuzzy," he grimaced, trying to recall through the fog of everything that had happened and fading pain killers. "I think, poison...then Logan cut my hands off," he shook his head and started at nothing in particular. A crash cart near the door tipped over as of its own volition, spilling implements across the floor. Silence resettled, "That's not right, is it?"
"Not as such, no," Laurie replied, her tone even, despite the small touch of alarm she felt. She reached for a bare patch of skin and pulsed a gentle push of calming hormones into his body, hopefully enough to counteract whatever subconscious power usage was going on. "It might be better if we focus on the future perhaps? I have, as you know, recently dealt with something of a similar nature. If you had any questions, I would be happy to be of service in enlightening you."
Julian looked down at his bandaged wrists, then back up to Laurie without truly being able to process the scale of the loss, "Did the rest of the team make it out okay?"
"They did, you were the only person so gravely hurt," Laurie said, having noted the look. "It's okay that things are overwhelming right now, no one is going to make you be okay with any of this. Just know that we're all here for you."
He leaned back against the overly soft pillow, trying to flex his knuckles which felt as if they needed to pop. "This is so fucked up," he muttered, while maintaining a healthy fixation on the sound-proofed ceiling tiles.
"Yeah," Laurie responded, gesturing for him to give her one of his wrists so that she could check the wounds. "You can close your eyes if you need but I need to check your injuries if that's okay?"
Julian took a deep breath and kept his eyes open, choosing to watch as she redressed the wounds. The agonizingly slow bandage removal drug on, to a point he thought he would be glad to see what was beneath the gauze. Unfortunately, once the old wrappings were removed, he immediately wished it would have taken longer. The wounded man's eyes closed momentarily, as he held back the tears he very much wished to shed. After a beat of silence and some odd poking and prodding Julian looked back at it, "All I came in for was a sore throat, doc."
"It's not a weakness to be vulnerable," Laurie said instead of a variety of comments she might have made. "I promise I won't think any less of you if you find this hard to come to terms with right now."
Laurie finished adding a little push of her powers to the stumps of Julian's wrists, enough to encourage the body to speed up the healing process. She couldn't magically grow back limbs, or really completely heal anything but she'd been able to speed wound healing and every little bit helped in a situation such as this.
"Thank you," he said with a curt nod and slight sniffle. "How long will I be laid up?" he pressed on, not wanting to allow himself to be vulnerable.
"You're stable for now, we want to keep you in for a few days to make sure your wounds are healing well but then it would be better that you be in your own space," Laurie replied, as she began to wrap the wounds again with new bandages. "After that, it's really up to you what you want to do. I can give you suggestions but nobody will force you to do anything."
Julian was quiet for a moment, looking down at his wrists in his lap. "Can...can you put me back out?" he looked up at Laurie, eyes beginning to water.
Laurie was not, in the main, someone who advocated for running away from one's problems, but she'd also been where Julian was now and the escape of sleep, and in that, the escape of dreams had been some of the few times when she didn't have to question what came next. She reached out and lay a hand against his face, pushing a pulse of her power out from her skin and into his.
"Sleep then, we'll be here when you wake up."
