Lorna and Maya have a great conversation on their hike. They learn a bit about each other.
Maya had spent the past day in what she could only describe as heaven – sure, there were other people but the sheer amount of space around her, and the presence of such a large number of nature spirits had her almost reeling from the feeling of active happiness. She assumed the smile she’d been wearing since they got here was possibly confusing, maybe even alarming, but she found she just didn’t care. She’d even given someone a hug just that morning, which had been a weird experience for both herself and the other person involved.
It was in this mood that she approached Lorna, curious about the older woman, who she had yet to truly speak with since joining the mansion’s band of misfit toys.
“Um, hi?”
Lorna was enjoying her cup of coffee while looking out over the vista. It was beautiful and a place someone could really relax, she turned when she heard a voice, "Hi. Come to enjoy the view?"
“Sort of, I’m not really sleep ready yet, so figured I’d come check it out,” Maya replied, looking out over the forest spread below them. “Thanks for letting me do this, I know I’m not the friendliest person back at the mansion.”
"Anytime. Alex and I do this a lot, so we'll put the word out when we plan another. And who says you aren't friendly?" Lor asked with a tiny smirk. "I get it, you have been through some shit and you are dealing with it on your own. And I think for a fact Scott Summers is the least friendliest person I know. Have you seen his scowl? Could make babies cry. He still hates me for what happened to his brother last year."
“Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I want to be the least friendly person in the world,” Maya noted with a smile, dropping down to sit on the ground. “Especially when I’m angry but this place, it’s different, less complicated. It makes me happy.”
Lorna joined her on the ground. "It is normal to be angry. I am not a therapist but I do find being outside helps." She looked over at the vista again and sighed, "May I ask where that anger comes from? Or is it too personal? Too personal, right?"
“Maybe a little,” Maya returned, pulling her knees up to rest her chin on them. “But since you’ve all got to deal with it, maybe not so much. It’s lots of stuff, mostly it feels like the only thing I have control over anymore. But sometimes it’s just, I don’t know, everything – everything makes me angry, all the time and if I have to suffer, well, it’s harder to ignore someone who’s making your day hell.”
Lorna listened and nodded in understanding. "Yes. Very hard to ignore someone who makes hell for you. Do you want my advice? I don't want to give it where it isn't welcomed. Believe me, I've been there."
“I don’t really go in for life advice,” Maya admitted, chin burrowing against her knees a bit. “I mean, I’ve got a therapist, and he’s working pretty hard at getting me straight but what the hell? Hit me.”
"How old are you 15? 16?" Lorna asked, "When I was your age, I was also very angry. It was about your age when I joined the Brotherhood of Mutants, a terrorist group who believe that mutants should be superior in every way. I thought I was ready for whatever came my way but I wasn't. Something happened that I will never forgive myself."
Lorna looked down at her cup and took a deep breath. "I decided to channel that anger into something else. I meditated, read books, attended classes, found better people to hang out with." Looking up at her. "My advice to you, is to surround yourself with people that will not bring out that angry out. But instead find some people that will make you feel better about yourself. As for the people at the school we cannot win them all." She paused for a moment. "What do you do in your spare time?"
“Fifteen, but only just,” Maya noted, side-eyeing Lorna slightly but with no real heat to it. “So, did you really think mutants were superior back then, or was it more about pissing off your fam?”
Lorna nodded, "I did believe it for a looong time. Not many people know this but my father is Magneto. The leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, can say it runs in the family more."
“Mutant supremacist father who’s a complete hypocrite considering his history? That must be completely awkward at family gatherings,” Maya replied with what was almost a tone of wonder. “All I’ve got to worry about is some mercenary taking a hit on me to get at my Dad.”
Lorna laughed, "And we still celebrated Hanukkah." She shook her head at the memories. There was some good ones in there but too many bad ones. "Well having a merc on your tail is never a good thing. And using you to get to your dad? No wonder you are pissed."
“Not exactly on my tail,” Maya admitted with a shrug. “More after my Dad than me, but they’re probably like if they found me, if they knew about me. So, they shipped me off here so I wouldn’t make some stupid powers mistake and out them to whoever’s after him. It wouldn’t be so bad if whatever my power is was useful, right now all it seems to be is I randomly copy fight moves. Most useless power ever. Oh, and I get possessed really easily by spirits, or magical constructs or whatever it is you want to call them.”
"Did you just say useless? Um, copying fight moves is awesome. Do you just watch someone and then able to mimic their moves? You can be like, a ninja." Lorna nodded with a frown. "Possession is not good. Is there anything can be done about that? I can stop a bullet for you but not sure what I can do about a spirit trying to do that."
“Don’t really know, we haven’t had a lot of chance to practice but it seems like anything I can see well enough or remember, copied some of my Dad’s moves when Wade first met me,” Maya replied, tone thoughtful as she kept an eye on the horizon, sometimes it was easier to talk when she didn’t have to look at people. “They gave me an amulet from my Grandfather, the spirit in it keeps me safe, at least so far. He takes his job pretty seriously.”
"What? What do they teach you at the mansion? Would you like to practice?" Her green eyes looked at the amulet. "Well, your Grandfather sounds like a good man to look out for you in that way." She gave Maya a tiny small, "You aren't that bad. I like our conversation. I learned a little about you and you learned a little about me."
“Teamwork, how not to get kidnapped by weird ass alternate dimension beings who put the creep in creepy, you know, normal stuff,” Maya noted with a wry smile. “I’m mostly working with Jennie these days on the more focussed stuff but we just started, so it’s not like she’s slacking or anything and my Grandfather is the best of men.”
"Do you think you can copy moves from watching videos? If so, I am hooking you up with some martial art videos." Lorna smiled at Maya. "I wish I had a Grandfather like yours. Looking out for you."
“He’s pretty great,” Maya admitted with a smile. She missed him and the rest of her family desperately, even with the occasional phone call that they could manage, they had to be brief and she never quite felt like she’d had enough time before they were gone again. “I honestly don’t know, I’ve never tried to.”
"Well, as a famous Star Wars character once said, 'Do or do not. There is no try.'" Lorna winked and stood up. "Come. Lets go back to the camp and I'll make sure you get those videos upon our return."
Maya raised her eyebrows slightly at the imperiousness of the command, but she was in too good a mood to really make comment on it, luckily for everyone involved, she really didn’t want to start a fight on this trip.
“Sure, lay on Mcduff.”
