Topaz and Hope || Saturday Night
Apr. 29th, 2017 07:29 pmTopaz invites Hope over for some de-stressing. And drinking. Mostly for drinking.
Hope glanced at her phone one last time before she knocked on the door. It was not really like her friend to just text and ask to come over, but it had been a while since she had seen Topaz...
With that, she knocked firmly three times.
"S'open!" Topaz called, finishing off the glass of wine she had been sipping. Well, sipping might have been putting it kindly. Midnight was asleep on her tree, and probably wouldn't bother them. She had already gotten a second glass out and filled it for Hope.
She stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind her. "Hey Topaz... afraid you will not be able to finish the bottle alone?" Hope greeted her friend as she took a seat on the couch next to her. "I hope you have some good red, because I brought this..." With dramatic gesture Hope revealed two bars of good dark Swiss chocolate. "I love this with wine."
"I'm no lightweight and I resent the implication," Topaz said in mock offense, gesturing at the glass she had poured for Hope. "I can hear your stress screaming all the way from here. Drink." She grabbed a bar of chocolate as she spoke.
Hope took the glass and took a long draught of the fruity red wine in the glass. "This is a good one. And what stress?" She took another long sip, rolling it around her mouth before reaching for some of the chocolate herself.
"I don't know what stress, you tell me." Definitely a sign Topaz wasn't completely sober. She poured herself another drink and took a long sip. "You're the one feeling it."
"You felt I was stressed?" One eyebrow rose on Hope's forehead. "And that made you text me to come and drink wine?" Her other eyebrow joined the first one.
"Are you complaining? It's good wine."
"Not complaining here..." Hope nibbled on some of the chocolate. "Glad to have a bit of a break from the books though... and my laptop. I had a moment or two of wanting to toss them outside the window."
"That's when you know it's time to stop," Topaz said, taking a bite of chocolate as well and washing it down with some wine.
"Very true... very very true." Hope leaned back against the pillows of the couch and worked her shoes of, some tension finally leaving her neck and shoulders. "How have you been, Topaz? I have been on the move so much we have not had much of a chance to chat now and then."
"Oh, you know." Topaz took another long sip of her drink. "Trying to keep busy." Keyword being "trying." Apparently a full classload wasn't that hard to handle when she had absolutely nothing else to do.
"Trying?" Hope drew out the word just a bit, as her eyebrow rose yet again. "Not even with the library and working with the magical crew combined?"
"Amanda takes care of the kids. All I do is hand out things to experiment on and try not to say something that could give them bad ideas." Topaz shrugged. "Really all I do is hang around the library and go to classes."
"It sounds kind of... boring? Stifling?" Especially compared to Hope's own life, where she now then had way too little time. Between her classes at Barnard, the work at XFI, her duties to the HFC and the other things she tried to fit in... she was pretty swamped.
Another shrug. "It could be worse. The world could be ending. Again. I'll take boring over that any day."
"Got a point there." Hope finished her glass of wine and reached over to the bottle refill it, topping of Topaz' glass as well. It was quiet for few moments as the young women sipped from their glasses. Finally Hope broke the silence. "If you had the chance to do whatever you wanted to do... what would you choose to do then?"
"Ta." Topaz toasted Hope with her glass real quick before focusing on drinking. Hope's question caught her off guard. She thought it over for a moment before saying in a teasing voice, "I didn't ask you over to psycho analyze me, Hope."
"But... but... inquiring minds want to know." Hope exclaimed equally teasingly, but then sobered quickly. "But seriously... what would you do? Because I am really curious about that."
Topaz rolled her eyes, still smiling. "Blimey, I don't know. I don't even know what I want to do this weekend, never mind with my life."
Hope tilted her head at her, narrowing her eyes. "Nothing? No vague dreams... fleeting idea's? Future jobs, family, become the first astronaut to make it to Mars? Your powers would come in handy maintaining the harmony during the two year voyage." She nibbled on another piece of chocolate.
Topaz laughed. "If I end up going to Mars, it'll be because someone got sick of me and put me on the rocket against my will." She paused, tilting her head. "Which sounds like something several people here can pull off so I probably shouldn't say that too loud."
"Oh my... that is very very true. We have quite brain trust in the basement." Hope giggled, then pulled out her phone. "Let's see if they think they can do it!" Pulling up the journal system, she started typing, reading out loud as she did so. "Dear brain trust in the basement... Topaz wants to go to Mars... Can you help her?"
"This is my fault for inviting you over," Topaz said solemnly, finishing her glass. She reached for the bottle, frowning when she saw that it was empty, and went to retrieve another one. "That's what I get for trying to be nice, I suppose."
"Well... I can ask for something else?" Hope paused typing and looked up from the phone. "But you do have to tell me something I can ask for! Since you invited me..."
"Or we can just drink." Topaz returned with the second bottle, grinning. She was definitely not sober. "That sounds like a lot more fun than asking people about sending me to another planet."
Hope looked at her phone, then at Topaz. "You're right." She finally decided. "But sometimes in the coming few days we are going to have find something for you. Maybe not a trip to Mars, but there must be other things." Accepting her refilled glass of wine from Topaz she added: "But first this. Cheers!"
Topaz rolled her eyes, but held up her glass in a mock toast. "Cheers," she said before drinking deeply.
