Sooraya and Mimi; first meeting
Jun. 6th, 2017 06:38 pmThe back door of the kitchen was open as it usually was, the line in the front had just opened and it would be quite busy out there, the ideal time to grab some for those that couldn't come here. Melissa had prepared a plastic bag and some bottles to take some bread and soup to the homeless boy that couldn't come here duo to a strained ankle, and his little brother that didn't dare leave him. She was quietly humming with a piece of bread in her mouth as she noticed the girl entering the back area watching her.
With her mouth half full she mumbled "This is not what it seems." as her eyes darted to all the possible ways to escape.
"I don't know know what 'it' is." Sooraya replied calmly, taking in the spooked young woman. "I'm Sooraya. Were you looking for something or someone?"
Melissa looked at the bread she had already gathered, the empty bottles she had and the soup that was bubbling on the stove, her emerald eyes gleaming, looking like a cornered wild cat ready to jump. "Just looking to take some soup away is all." She was wondering in how much trouble she was right now.
"Why not come up front? You would get some soup and bread, just like everyone else. Eats a lot easier then trying to drink soup from those bottles. And there are apples and oranges as well." Sooraya asked, still trying to get a bit more of a read of the situation. They had enough bread and soup, that was not the issue...
"Up front I only get it for myself, not taking this along for myself though. Some of us can't come here today, can't leave the little kids to die out there." The girl seemed harmless enough for Melissa to lower her guard a bit.
Sooraya gave her sad smile. Asking why she'd not simply asked would not get her any further. The distrust was clear on the blonde's face. "What is your name? And for how many are you hoping to get some food."
Melissa deemed that giving away her 'name' wouldn't matter much "Name is Mimi, am just trying to take some food to two boys, one can barely walk and his little brother won't leave his side." She still felt suspicious enough to not move about yet and kept one eye on the girl while also trying to keep some attention on her surroundings.
Biting her lip for a moment, Sooraya once more scanned the face of the girl. She seemed sincere. And thought it was technically against the rules... "Alright, let me see what I can do for you. But first, tell me, do I need arrange for someone to take a look at them? I know people who can do that and who would do it with no payments asked."
The girl seemed genuine and the offer sounded good, too good, and if something sounded too good, then it probably was too good to be true, a hard lesson to learn. "He will be fine, he just can't move around much right now, just needs some food." Melissa wasn't about to give away easy targets for whatever could be done to them.
"Alright, give me a moment and I'll see what I can do." Sooraya had caught sight of the other volunteers returning and she quickly stepped over, explaining she'd be a few moments and if she could take her place in the line. She moved over to one of the cabinets in the room, opened it and started pulling out a few things.
Melissa watched carefully as Sooraya moved about, almost bolting when some other people where about to come in, luckily the girl intervened and kept them away. "You know, the soup alone would be enough, don't want to cause to much trouble."
Sooraya finally came over with a bag containing two bottles of water, a small thermos of soup, a small package of beef jerky and a chocolate bar. "This should help. Also..." She added two plastic cups and spoons for the soup.
"Eeeehh thank you... " Melissa said as she viewed the contents within the bag that Sooraya being brought over. "I'll make sure the boys will come over to say thank you as well once... once he can walk again."
"Wait a moment. I've something that might help with that. Just a moment." Sooraya headed towards another cupboard and pulled out an elastic bandage as well as three clip fasteners. "This should help him walk. Do you want me to show you how to put it on?"
"I'm not sure if i'll be able... Wait are you staling for time?" The realization of this possibility hit her, such a beginner mistake. "Look I got to go now... sorry lady." She took the bag of supplies and made for the door.
"Mimi!" Sooraya called out. "Wait, then just take it with you. There are pictures on there which show you how to use it."
She hesitated one last moment, taking the elastic bandage package and bolting out the backdoor.
Sooraya shook her head sadly. Mimi was so very wary and she'd hoped to get a little more information about the boys she mentioned. But Mimi'd said she'd bring by the boys to thank her...
Re arranging her apron and hairnet, Sooraya returned to the stove.
