The mansion is, well, old, and sometimes requires emergency rain maintenance.

Xavin was perched on the second to top rung of the small ladder, staring up at the roof of the rear sunroom.

It was dark and raining in the kind of oppressive way it never rained back home where it didn't goddamn rain. Light spilled out from the sunroom, showing the array of tubs and cloths soaking up the leaks. "Kyle! I can't reach!"

Yeah. Fuck the east coast. LA was so much better.

"You're on a ladder, that's what it's for." Kyle was on the roof in question, already soaked through and considering just taking off his shirt and wrapping it around his head, then at least water wouldn't be in his eyes. "Unless you wanna be up here with a nailgun and tarpaper, and before you volunteer, no, no nail guns until I know you won't nail your foot into something."

"Augh!” Xavin stretched, growing another two feet in the legs. The good thing was that they could reach the guttering now. “This is disgusting. It’s full of leaves and there’s a tree growing in here.” It wasn’t a tree. It was a twig. A small twig. “You do this and I’ll prove I can use a nail gun.” Xavin started scooping leaves.

Kyle's extremely wet face popped up, and he made a point to shake the water violently. It didn't make him any drier, it just made water go everywhere else. "Nope. I get the nailgun, you get leaves. You only get nailgun practice in dry weather on the ground for now." He picked up some more of the tar paper sheets and nailed them over the leaking shingles expertly. Bam. Bam. Bam. "How can you even not reach anyway, you're a shapeshifter. Grow longer arms. Reach better."

"You reach better!"

"I can't grow nine foot orange rock arms!"

"That's not my fault!" A last handful of muck was scraped out of the guttering. "I'm done," Xavin said, water dripping into their eyes. "Do you think you need the tarp to cover the skylight?"

"Probably better to do it no matter what." Kyle grumbled. "Fuck, you might as well be up here too, the tarp takes two people, or one people with four arms and I don't got four arms." He paused, and swiped water off his face. "Hey, can you grow extra arms or like, are you not that kind of shapeshifter?"

Xavin hoicked themself onto the roof and wiped water off their face. "No idea. I'll try sometime but not now." They spread the tarp, holding it for Kyle.

Kyle busied himself for quite a while smoothing down and then taping the tarp into place. "Maybe start with like a tail or something. I mean, extra arms feels like it'd go bad if you messed it up and shapeshifter erased your elbows or something." It was just all the awful ways that could go wrong, and they all went down the path of "gross" or "painful" or "Kyle encouraged me to!". "Remind me to give you overtime for this, or like, rain pay. I'll invent an overtime category, rain pay, time and a half just for ending up more wet than if you took a shower."

"I'm not growing a tail!" Green fingers spread the tarp against the dimming light. "What if it stuck? This did." There was a pause while Xavin wiped rain off their face. "Can we discuss overtime tomorrow? We're done now."

"We can discuss overtime once we're inside and you have a towel and dry pants." Kyle answered. "Get inside, I'll be right behind you." He took the expedient route, down the wall instead of Xavin's ladder, toolbelt clacking all the way down.
