Memories over apple pie; Sooraya and Angel
Aug. 8th, 2017 04:06 pmBaking was not her strongest suit, but Sooraya smiled satisfied when she pulled open the oven and the delicious aroma filled the air. Leaving the pie to cool for just a bit, she went around the kitchen, gathering the whipped cream along with two small plates and forks.
When the pie had cooled enough, she quickly removed it from it's tin and put it on a tray with the rest of the things. Finally she added a small bowl of cinnamon ice cream and headed towards the small sitting room that Angel favored using for an office.
Pushing open the room with her hip, she didn't say anything, just gave Angel a raised eyebrow and a small smile.
The redhead in question didn't immediately notice that her office had been invaded. She was staring hard at her laptop and chewing on pen. But of course, food was the best way to get her attention. She sniffed a couple of times and looked up, eyes fixing first on the pie and then on Sooraya.
"Apple pie?"
"With cinnamon ice cream and whipped cream." Sooraya moved to the desk and put the tray down before starting set things out. "The pie is still warm... you know it's the best when that's the case."
"Won't see me saying no to warm food," Angel said with a grin, closing her laptop. Her eyes drifted to the little calendar that sat on the corner of her desk. August eighth. "I suppose this is a special occasion."
"I used the recipe of her favorite pie..." Sooraya's voice trailed of, her eyes lost in memory. "I think she'd like that. And if she were here... we'd have to hurry to get a piece."
Angel's smile turned sad. She had gotten used to this weird Franken-whatever world, because they hadn't had a choice. But it was hard not being able to properly remember the friends they had lost. She wasn't even sure it was safe to say Yvette's name. "Well, let's do her proud and eat this whole thing up ourselves."
Sooraya leaned a little closer, even though they were the only ones in the room. "And that is why I made sure to have more then enough." Leaning back, she finished dishing out the treat. "You know... sometimes I still find myself reaching for my phone to text her... or just to get her opinion on something... I wished I could have talked to her after the whole thing in District X." Sooraya added after another long moment of silence.
"Same," Angel admitted. "Sometimes I need help with something, or I'll see something and think 'Oh she would love that' and I go to text her and...." She waved her hand vaguely. "You know. It's weird. You'd think we'd be over that by now."
"I remember some one saying... not sure who it was, maybe the Professor or even Marie... But the point was that there were no timelines for mourning. Things moved on their own schedule..." Sooraya picked up her fork, taking a bite of the apple pie. "I just try to keep that in mind when I feel like that... easier said then done though."
Angel took a couple of bites to collect her thoughts, her mind on the collection of candles they had in their suite. "I don't think I'll ever stop mourning for any of them," she said after a moment. Sure, she was living her life and doing everything she could to help the world they lived in now. But that didn't mean she had to stop missing the people she loved. The people she had lost.
"I don't think I will either." Sooraya agreed. "But I do try to remember the happier times above the way they passed. Do you remember when we were having that girl's night... I think we were prepping Yvette for her first date with Fred." A smile curled around her lips at the memory of the event.
Angel giggled. "And then we made her stay up all night after the date to tell us about it."
"I think there might have been a few moments where she wanted to strangle us that night." Sooraya had to laugh when she remembered the look on Yvette's face. "Especially when we starting asking about kissing..."
"She never would have. She was too patient with us." Angel grinned. Yvette had always been far too patient, especially with some of Angel's more... outlandish... antics.
"Which memory pops in your mind when you think about her?" Sooraya asked around another bite of apple pie. "Good memories, I mean." She quickly clarified.
Angel tilted her head for a moment before smiling. "Giving several doctors and nurses heart attacks racing through a hospital with her in a wheelchair." She laughs. "It was after she got hurt in Bosnia. She was being released so I figured why not go out in style. You?"
"Both of us were volunteering at the boat house with Elpis. A pile of files in front of us we were making our way through and just we just looked up at each other and started laughing. I don't even remember why or who started, but it felt so good. And Angelo was looking at us like we had gone mad." Sooraya grinned at the memory, her eyes far away.
Angel popped another bite of pie in her mouth, giggling. It felt like there was no time for fun like that anymore. "Feels weird without her sometimes."
"It does." Sooraya nodded. "I've... I've noticed though that it's becoming less and less... Things in this world, let's say they are very good at sweeping you up so you don't notice a lot of other things anymore."
"I feel like I don't have time to notice anything in this world anymore besides 'hey everything is awful'," Angel shot a glare at her laptop before looking back at Sooraya. "We should take more time for the little things."
"It's something Yvette would've said too." Sooraya reminisced.
"Live my life like Yvette sounds like a good guide," Angel said thoughtfully. "Starting with eating more apple pie."
"More apple pie is always a good thing." Sooraya agreed. "So, you want another piece?"
"As if I would ever say no."
