Dark Dimension: Homecoming: FOOD
Oct. 8th, 2017 07:59 amAfter hours of wondering the girls decide that food is probably the first best thing to do. Their wondering pays off.
"You know, when you look past the dust this place was probably beautiful once." Clea said as they decided to go down one of the corridors filled with art work on the walls and doors that were either were locked, or stood ajar. Her stomach growled at the same time she yawned. "I can't tell if I am more tired or hungry."
"They're pretty much the same after a while," Topaz said, a bit distractedly. She'd broken her number one rule and dropped her shields completely, letting her empathy stretch out as far as it was able. The last thing she wanted was to be caught off guard. Again. Stupid, stupid, stupid. There was an almost overwhelming sense of fear that seemed permanently embedded into the atmosphere of this place; it was distracting. She looked down at Clea's arm, which was stained red from her ripped stitches, then at the blanket still in her hand for some inexplicable reason. "If we can find a knife, maybe we can cut this up to make bandages."
"Kitchens have knives." Clea had popped another pain killer earlier and it was already taking effect. "Alright, I remember anything visiting old castles back home, it is that the kitchens are usually near the dining halls. It is kind of weird, this place. I can't explain it. Back before the shadow appeared I would walk around the town, looking into each of the mirrors that we saw. I think they are portals."
"Well, let's try not to fall into any of those," Topaz murmured. They were already far enough from home without ending up in another dimension before Amanda found them. If Amanda found them. She was trying not to think about that though. She peeked into doors as they passed. "Ah! Dining room."
"Yes. Let's not." Clea's mood brighten when she found the dining room. "We found it! Okay, one of the side doors back there should lead to the kitchen." It was strange, but the dining room looked to be sort of well kept to the rest of the place. "Do you think he lives here?"
"Well, someone does," Topaz murmured. "I guess he would make sense considering he was here. Unless he was just following us." The thought of that unsettled her. Everything about this place was so wrong.
"I was thinking...about where the people might be. It is obvious that someone had to build all of this and lived here." She remembered seen paintings of people on the wall, worn out, but still visible. Walking on the left side of the hall, Clea came to the first door and peered in. "Whoever that someone is...they are life savers." Forming a tiny light orb, similar to Topaz's and let it float in.
"Well there's no one here now," Topaz said. "Which is kind of weird. A place this big needs a staff." Maybe she just couldn't feel them. That was also unsettling. She peeked in after Clea's light orb. "I do believe we've found the kitchen."
Clea walked in and instantly a bunch of light orbs that lined the walls were lite. "Is it just me or does this place reek of magic?" Walking over to where the pantry was thought to believe, "Please have normal food."
"I'll take abnormal food right now honestly," Topaz said, going to search the cabinets. "And yeah, it does. It's kind of weird."
Pulling down a jar, Clea opened it and sniffed it before taking a tiny taste of it. "Taste...words can't describe what it taste like but it isn't bad. If I had to compare it with something, it would be jam." Clea looked around, "After this do you want to go find the library? If there is one? There has to be some kind of history about this place."
Topaz began searching for some bread, or something bread-like, they could put the jam stuff on. "Library might be good. Maybe we could find some spell books too." There had to be something that could help them.
"Looks like we have a plan." Clea smiled for the first since coming here. "There is something on the top shelf..." She pointed and from the corner of her eye she saw some knives hanging on the wall. "And here are the knives."
"Oh, brilliant." Topaz went to retrieve a knife. "You focus on finding food, I'll get this blanket cut up." She sat down on the floor and started working.
Clea walked away from the pantry and started to look on the other shelves. It was there she found a weird looking loaf and took it down. She poked it before tearing off a small piece and took a bite. It was tough and again it tasted weird - but it was edible. Heading back to Topaz, something cause her eye, a cart? Walking over to it, she saw a pitcher and the carcass of an animal that she had never seen before. Someone had prepared food which caused Clea to look around. Where was everyone?
Grabbing the pitcher, she hurried back to Topaz and placed them on the table nearby. "Do you think the people that live here are hiding?"
"Maybe." Topaz frowned, pausing in her work of cutting up the blanket to focus on what she was picking up around her. "I don't feel anything from anyone, but that doesn't mean much... god knows what this place could be doing to my empathy." It was a bit unsettling. She didn't like feeling head blind.
Clea looked at Topaz, "If you need some extra juice, you may use me." She poured the clear liquid into a cup and took a sip, "Oh finally something I recognized. Water." She poured another cup and handed it over to Topaz before getting to work on preparing their meal. Clea wanted to ask if they were going to get rescued, but she didn't. More afraid of the answer - if they were trapped here forever. Shaking her head, not a thought she wanted to hear. "Here you go." She placed a piece of the loaf with the jam-like jam next to the cup.
"Appreciate it," Topaz said distantly, taking a bite of bread without really thinking. "It's not a magic problem, though. Weirdly refreshing since so many of the problems in my life are magic related." She finished cutting up the strips. "Give me your arm."
"There is a throbbing but lucky for me, I still have the pain meds." She started to undo the bandage and avoided starting too much on where the stitches were located, some where lose or had came out. "I hope you aren't queasy around blood."
"I'll live." Topaz shooed her hands away. "Eat. You're losing blood, you need food. I'll focus on this."
Taking a bit of her food, Clea didn't look at it after unwrapping the original bandage. "Thank you."
"Nothing to thank me for, gotta keep you alive," Topaz murmured, focusing on the wound. She a large strip, big enough to cover the wound, around Clea's arm, then began tying it down tighter with smaller strips. "Is that too tight or are you good?"
"And what about you? In order to keep me alive, you need to be thanked and also need food." She handed Topaz a slice of the bread like substance. "And it is good. I wonder if it will leave a scar."
"Alright, alright." Topaz took the bread and nibbled on it. It wasn't bad. "It might," she said in response to the scar question. "You might have been okay if it hadn't been for the stitches coming out, but... what do I know, I'm not a doctor."
"No. But it is reassuring." Clea said and finished the last bit of the food. "They will find us and then we can go home."
"Yeah," Topaz agreed. Now wasn't the time for gloom and doom. She needed to be optimistic for Clea. And hell, Amanda had pulled off the impossible before. "Come on, let's keep looking around. Maybe we can find someone actually good to help us."
