Bobbi and Jean hang out at the local mall, and plans are made for a potential party.

Bobbi surveyed the busy food court, amused at all of the parents - mostly mothers, it seemed - with one or more kids in tow. With school just around the corner the push was on for getting new supplies, clothes, and all that jazz. She for one was glad she didn't have to do anything of the sort.

Instead she sat back in her chair and twirled her plastic spoon around in the hot fudge sundae she was currently enjoying. She'd taken an afternoon run to the mall with Jean and they were taking a break from their outing.

"You know, I knew there'd be more people out than usual today, but damn."

Jean took a sip of her Orange Julius, eying the crowds with a smile. It reminded her of being a teenager again. Where the mall was the place to be with her friends like Kitty, waiting for cute boys to walk by while scoping out the latest tiny backpack to go with one's pager. Before the Internet had started to become more of a thing (tm).

"Me too," she mused.

"I thought they'd be shopping on Amazon. It's kind of nice."

"It is. Good for the economy at least, I suppose." Economics wasn't her forte, but it couldn't be a bad thing she figured. She ate another tiny plastic spoonful of ice cream, dabbing at her lips with one of the few thin, brown paper napkins they'd given her.

"So, what's on your to-do list for today?" If she was being totally honest, getting ice cream was pretty much it for her, and bang. Mission accomplished.

"Go to the mall?" Jean replied, then laughed.

"I was determined to not have a list after that. Trying to be more spontaneous."

She drew in a large gulp of Orange Julius, then immediately grimaced, grabbing her temples.

"Ugh...brain freeze. Why?"

Bobbi tried not to laugh, but she may have snickered just a teeny bit. "Spontaneity is a good thing, I'm down with that." She scraped the remainder of her bowl and finished off her sundae, then wiped her face with the last bit of clean napkin, satisfied how she'd used every last bit of them.

"We can walk through the mall and see where fate takes us then?" Sale signs and pretty display windows had their own gravitational pull, and they could simply surrender to their whims as they wandered about.

Jean's smile widened. "Sounds like a pl--" she paused, then caught herself.

"Good idea."

Hopping up from her seat, Jean grimaced again, gently touching her side. Her ribs were still healing. Bone took awhile. And the specialist Cecilia had called in had done wonders with helping to fix her face. One could hardly tell by now.

"Shall we?" she said.

"We shall, if you're ok to go?" The grimace hadn't gone unnoticed, but Bobbi didn't want to pry too much just the same. She offered her arm to Jean in case she wanted to link arms and walk together, for the dual purpose of a) being cute, and b) to offer support to her friend without having to ask her whether she wanted it or not.

"I'm good. I can still walk," Jean assured her, but nevertheless linked her arm with hers. "The sitting and bending and breathing part is the difficult part."

"Getting better, though."

A teenager chasing after a younger child darted in front of them, and an elderly couple wearing workout clothes strolled beside them, then passed them, their fingers intertwined.

"Did you go to the mall as a kid?" Jean said, then added.

"I used to like to visit the local Tower Records and browse for new music."

"On the weekends sometimes, yeah. I spent a lot of time with after school activities for the most part." Track and field had been her jam, at least until her powers had manifested. Studying, which had always been big for her, took over most of that time then, but she still would spend the odd weekend afternoon at the mall with her friends occasionally.

"The bookstores were always my favourite, but music stores were a close second."

Jean laughed. "I usually went to the library for my book fix. Especially after Moira kept having to buy new bookcases," she said.

"Unfortunately, I had to leave the mall scene when my dad moved us to Europe so I could learn my powers better. I stayed on Muir. The nearest mall was hours away so I became obsessed with books and music."

"That must've been a little rough, especially in the pre-Amazon days and all," Bobbi said with a nod. "It helped with your control, then, I take it? And at least you can cruise the mall now any time you want, right?"

Jean smiled. "Right. It is pretty convenient," she said. She nodded toward a nearby clothing store.

"But half the things they sell would be nice if it weren't for random words printed on them. I miss the really bad 2000s style. Highlights and tiny backpacks and glitter. So much glitter."

"We should totally throw a 2000s era party," Bobbi blurted out. "I mean, we could probably find some old outfits somewhere, and music is so easy to find online these days, yeah?" She mulled it over for a tic before continuing. "Ok, it doesn't have to be a full blown party, but a get together where we listen to music from that era even would be nice." She just wanted an excuse to party, clearly.

Jean headed inside the store. She laughed. "I'm sure thrift stores have plenty of clothing options," she said. She shrugged.

"Sounds like fun. My birthday is later this month. We could have it then? Though I might add the 90s in there too for more options."

"Yes, that sounds like an excellent idea and now that we've said it aloud we have to do it." Those were the rules, after all. If they weren't then they should be, Bobbi told herself as she followed Jean inside the store.

"Well...then I'm putting you in charge," Jean mused. She seemed well versed in party etiquette.

"Go nuts."

She eyed an era-appropriate baby doll dress, then held it up.

"Maybe we won't have to thrift as much as I thought."

Bobbi grinned at the permission, rubbing her hands together. "Excellent. I shall do exactly that."

She sized up the dress as Jean held it up, then gave her a thumbs up. "Dude, that will be perfect for it. Nice find!"

Jean glanced it over. "Thanks....I'm a little disappointed, though," she said thoughtfully.

"I was thinking there'd be more work." She shrugged.

"I'll probably take a trip anyway, if only to avoid paying $50 for something I'll only wear once."

"Fair point." Bobbi frowned a little. Maybe being with Warren had affected her judgment about that kind of thing. No, it most likely definitely had done so.

"Tell you what, we can pop over to the thrift store once we leave here, get a head start on the whole retro thing before announcing it to everyone else." She'd already had her ice cream so she was good to go whenever, basically.

Jean's smile widened. "Sounds good," she said.

"I'm trying to decide between being a Spice Girl, or Laney Boggs from She's All That."

"Both solid choices. I'd go with a Spice Girl though, if I had to pick." She couldn't go wrong with either one though. "This is going to be so much fun, I'm excited now."

"Me too, actually. I'm tempted to buy a case of Surge and see what alcohol would pair well with it," Jean mused.

"You realize, of course that this means you'll have to be a Spice Girl as well," she added as she examined a necklace.

"They're a set."

"Like you even have to ask." Bobbi replied, telling her what she wanted, what she really, really wanted. She was clearly down for that.
