Angel and Kurt commiserate after a rough Danger Room session, and discuss life after the X-Men.

"Ow," Angel lamented pathetically, rolling her shoulders. The Danger Room had really tossed them around that day. "Scott is a sadist."

Kurt was sitting beside her on the bench, gingerly stretching his arms and legs. "At least an occasional one. But then, his scenarios are always realistic."

"Yeah, I guess something is usually trying to kill us," Angel mumbled, leaning over to undo her boots. "Wonder if it's too late for a career change. No one tries to kill the people who drive ice cream trucks."

"Or at least very rarely. You have a second career already in the making, do you not? But the one I could go back to is hardly less demanding." Even his tail ached, he was disconcerted to discover.

Angel snorted, finally getting her boots off and wiggling her toes. "I feel like being a journalist these days isn't much safer either. Or at least it's getting to that point."

"Only if they know your name and where to find you as well." And he had confidence she was keeping those things need to know. "Perhaps I should give it some thought." He winced as he flexed his feet in turn. "I am not as young as I was."

"Where do retired X-Men go?" Angel wondered, tilting her head. "I mean, we're basically a retirement home for SHIELD agents at this point."

"I do not think it has happened yet, for anyone to have to consider that." He glanced at her with a crooked smile. "Perhaps into serving the cause in less active ways."

Angel pursed her lips, clearly thinking hard about that. "Like, training and stuff?"

"Yes, something like that. To do that full time and not go into the field. Although", he added ruefully, "it still might involve Danger Room time."

"You could help with GenX stuff," Angel said thoughtfully. "One of us is usually in the Danger Room with them and another is monitoring from the box. They do all the work though, you just have to make sure they don't get hurt."

"That might be a good stepping stone", he agreed. "Still in with the action, but... not quite so much of it."

"And I won't lie, watching everyone else do all the work is kind of nice," Angel said with a small smile. "Actually, I bet there's a lot you can do around here that doesn't involve getting your butt kicked in this place every other day," she joked.

Kurt laughed quietly. "I should talk to the Professor, I suppose. Especially now that my days are... emptier."

He hadn't told anyone but Amanda and Meggan about Jubilee, but it was no secret he'd moved out of their rooms.

It was no secret, and there were plenty of rumors going around, because on the rare occasion when things were quiet, the mansion dwellers were a bunch of gossipy so-and-so's. But Angel had more tact than that, and she certainly wasn't going to ask. "I'm sure he's got plenty of suggestions with that big old brain of his," she said instead, nodding wisely.

"He almost always does." He cracked his shoulders with a sigh. "And you? All is well, as far as it can be?"

"Nothing to complain about," Angel said, shrugging. "The paper email has been getting more death threats than usual, but Doug and Sue routed it through like, a million different something or others so it can't be traced. Tech babble, I don't know. All to be expected, I guess."

He nodded. "And if all they have to go on is the email, no real names or addresses, there will be little they can do to act on the threats. Besides, if they come here they may live to regret it."

Angel snorted. "They'd be lucky to walk out of here in one piece and not clucking like a chicken. I'm not too worried about it. It's just... getting ugly out there. Uglier, I guess."

"With all that has happened", he said regretfully, "it is only to be expected. I suppose that all we can do is keep going, until one day things may be less dark."

"Yeah," Angel agreed. "Keep fighting the good fight. In any way we can."

"And for as long as we can. Or must."
