A normal school day goes to hell when the monsters under Topaz’s bed corner her on campus.

It didn’t seem to matter what time of day it was, the grounds between Topaz’s first two classes were always crowded. She stepped out of the building, sighed, popped her earbuds into her ears, and prepared to make a quick dash. She had ten minutes and a seemingly impenetrable throng of people in front of her. She put her head down and hurriedly started walking.

"Oi!" Topaz ran directly into a person in her path, staggering both of them back. It took her a moment to recognize the dark haired figure; Adam Destine. He spread his arms and gave her a crooked smile. "Topaz, love, you need to watch where you're going. Could hurt yerself rushing off, not paying attention like that."

It took Topaz a moment longer than it should have to recognize the man in front of her. The Destines and the age of fifteen were years and another world (literally) behind her. She looked up at him for a moment before immediately yanking her earbuds out. "What-" Too many people around to even think about casting a spell. She lowered her voice to hiss, "What the fuck are you doing here?"

"It's a nice day for a walk, isn't it? Get out in the fresh air, run into someone you know unexpectedly. Especially surrounded by just droves of basically innocent people."

Topaz gritted her teeth, thinking of the phone in her jacket pocket. There would be no way to get to it and hit Amanda's speed dial without Adam noticing. "Yeah, beautiful day," she said. "Can't help but notice you're very alone. Your brother and sisters wise up finally?"

"See, the thing about that is that appearances can be deceiving. It's like one of those summer storms like. One minute, blue skies. The next minute-" Figures started to appear. "-it's dreadfully pissing down on you. You know what that's like, don't you?"

Albert settled himself on Topaz's other side, an amiable smile on his face as he tucked a newspaper underneath his arm. "And here you are caught outside without an umbrella love," he arched an eyebrow and shook his head at the girl, "didn't dear old dad teach you better than that."

Grace had the decency to look somewhat apologetic. But not much. "You had to know this was coming. You might as well just come with us. No one wants to start anything right here. Not with so many people around."

A hand landed on Topaz's shoulder from behind, gently urging her. "Come along quietly and nobody will get hurt." Jasmine spoke from behind, regret clear in her voice. "Nor do I want to have to hurt you."

Topaz glared, resisting the urge to throw off the hand on her shoulder. "So I suppose if I don't come with you, you'll blow up the campus?" She asked sarcastically, stalling for time. But it was useless. She was going to go. Fighting back wasn't worth the lives of the hundreds of people around them. "And what's in it for you? I'm guessing you don't just want a nice friendly reunion after so long."

"We don't 'blow up campuses'. Spending too much time with those gits that bailed you out. No, see, we'll just rip the lifeforce out of a few dozen and use that to poison another grand or so. Nice and quiet and very, very terminal, like. As for what we get out of it, let's just say you get to be part of the bigger picture for once. Oh-" He leaned in with a smile. "and you and me... we've got some unfinished business that we might just sort out at the same time."

A shiver ran down Topaz's side at that last bit. "Right, then," she said coolly. Her phone was in her pocket. Someone would notice eventually that she wasn't in the library and go looking for her. "After you."

"There's a good girl. Grace, get us out of here. I'm terribly afraid I'm going to catch a spot of Yank the longer we stay here. Besides, can't fault the extra time with our girl here, can we?" Adam put his hand out. "Phone and the bag. Don't trust your friends not to track it."

Damn it. Topaz slipped her bag off her shoulder and shoved her phone into it, handing it silently to Adam, glaring all the while. She was trying to look angry and unconcerned, but her mind was racing. She had no idea what was going to happen. That was terrifying.

Smiling, Grace eased her arm around Topaz's, leaning in to touch heads, almost as if they were sharing a secret. "It'll be fine, Topaz," A haze was starting, the teleportation spell wouldn't take long. "It'll be like old times, you see." Grace nodded to her family, and just like that, they were gone. Topaz included.
