Topaz meets the person responsible for her kidnapping - another ghost from the past.

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you to save tying up a girl for the third date?”

Sarcasm, as always, was the refuge of the doomed. The Destines had left Topaz in a dingy motel room with two thick, silent blokes, who had tied her hands behind her back and shoved her into a corner while they waited. The men were standing near the door and ignoring every single sarcastic barb Topaz threw at them.

“I mean, this isn’t really my thing anyways, but someone could’ve at least bought me dinner first. I’m starving, I didn’t even get breakfast this morning. Although—” she cast a look out the window, which revealed a dark sky. The sun had probably long set. “I’m gonna go ahead and guess we’re a bit past breakfast, whatever time zone we’re in.” Because hell if she knew. No answer from the guards. “So did you forget how to talk? Wouldn’t surprise me, blokes as big as you aren’t usually blessed with brains…”

"I didn't pay them to talk." The voice came from the doorway, where Taboo had made his entrance. "My, look at you. My little girl is all grown up."

Topaz's head snapped around, any response she might have had completely lost in the shock. Of all the guesses she might have had as to who had orchestrated this, somehow, her father was the last person she would have thought of. "You.... what the hell?" She finally managed weakly.

He smiled, coming into the room as one of his lackies closed the door behind him. "Yes, me," he replied. "What's the matter, Topaz? You're not often at a loss for words. Where's the pithy comeback and the snarky attitude your mentor taught you?" He spat the word 'mentor' out like it tasted bad.

There was a lot to digest there. Like the fact that it sounded as if he had been following her. She latched on to the way he said the word 'mentor,' however, and felt his disgust associated with the word. A small smirk pulled at her lips. "Still bitter about that, Dad?" She taunted. "Big old bloke scared witless by a woman half his size, must have been a blow to your ego, huh?"

"She stole you from me!" he hissed, his calm facade dropping for an instant before he recovered himself. "But no matter. We're going to make it right. We're going to make all of it right, you and I. We'll be a family again, all of us."

"She - what?" Again, Topaz faltered, confused. "What're you on about?"

"You, me and Alice. Together again, as a family should be." His expression grew beatific. "You're going to help me bring her back."

It took Topaz a moment to find her voice again. "What... are you... talking about?" She finally asked slowly. "We're not... you're not bringing anyone back from the dead." He wasn't strong enough for that. Not even close.

"We can. And we will." He smiled almost fatherly at her, but madness danced behind his eyes. "I have everything we need, and with you by my side, we'll have the power to do it. We'll be able to bring Alice back."

Have you lost your mind? Topaz had to bite down the question. She had a feeling she already knew the answer. "Why in the world do you think I would do anything to help you?"

Taboo sighed and theatrically rolled his eyes. "Of course, you couldn't just agree and save us all the unpleasantness of threats. So be it." He reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a cell phone, showing it to Topaz. The background on the screen was of Stephen and Clea, obviously on a date and oblivious to the fact they were being watched. "I know about your students. At any time, I can have someone do something to them you wouldn't like. Need I say more?"

Topaz glared at the phone, gritting her teeth. Son of a bitch. "You know what?" She said scathingly. "I hope we can bring Alice back. Just so she can see what kind of monster you've turned into."

Her 'father' only smiled serenely. "As long as we do bring her back."
