Log: Xavin and Jean, Thursday Night
May. 3rd, 2018 07:44 pmSo you want to be an X-Man...
Xavin knocked on the door to Jean's office and straightened their shirt. "Jean? Can we talk?"
Glancing up at the sound, Jean smiled and slipped off her glasses.
"Of course," she said, motioning for them to sit.
"What's on your mind?"
They looked...contemplative and a little nervous. It'd been awhile since they'd spoken, something Jean should've remedied before this.
"Uh.... Are you recovered from... y'know." Xavin gave a vague gesture. How did you signify 'a largely unspecified degree of fish monster'?
Jean smiled wryly. "Yeah," she said. Though she still found herself lingering in the bath a lot longer than she had before.
"As much as one can be, I suppose." She studied them.
"How are you? I'm sorry I haven't really been by much since we brought you here." It was easy to get bogged down with work and other things.
"Ehhh..." Xavin waggled green fingers. "Okay. I mean, things have been a bit crazy but, okay."
Jean laughed. "I can imagine," she said, crossing her legs.
"I suppose that's the downside of living here. Nothing is quite normal."
"No." Xavin leaned against the desk nervously. "Actually, I want to talk to you about the X-Men. I want to be a trainee." Get it out. Drop the bombshell. And... wait for the fall out. Whatever that was going to be.
Jean raised her eyebrows, a mixture of surprise and a light smile crossing her lips.
"Wow, that's a pretty big step. What brought this on?"
"Things happen around here. Things." Xavin gave a finger waggle. "I don't know what I want to do but, like, some of the stuff like X-Force or the mutant underground stuff isn't for me. This ... this could be, maybe."
Tilting her head, Jean was silent a moment. "You don't have to fight at all, you know. If you don't want to." The moment she said it, though, she knew that wasn't entirely true. To live at the mansion, the nexus of everything strange, sometimes you had to.
She glanced down, then nodded. "I'd...be happy to put in a good word if that is what you want. I'll help any way I can."
"I know I don't have to. But if I do, I want to know what I can do. And... this place attracts crazy. I want to be prepared."
Jean laughed. "Fair enough," she said. She couldn't fault them for that.
"I can talk to Scott tomorrow."
"Thanks. I just - I want to see how much I can do with my powers and I want to be cynical, but also, maybe I could make a difference, you know?"
Jean's smile broadened. It was warm and affirming. "Absolutely. It's hard to do what we do but...I think someday it will. It may not seem like it at first. Even when it sucks, but it will," she said. She tilted her head.
"What made you come to this decision, if you don't mind me asking?"
"I don't know. We... things happen around here and I'd like to be better prepared for that. And, I think I'd like to make a difference but, not like, by working with homeless people and things like Tandy. I mean, ugh and also, whatever." For a moment, Xavin's voice was pure Valley Girl.
"So a culmination of things, then," Jean said with a smirk at the valley girl voice.
"Do you have any ideas of what you might want to do in between missions? There's training, of course, but that does leave some downtime."
"Well, I have school, of course - I'm in my last semester at the community college and I need to keep my GPA high if I'm going to transfer to 4 year program with a scholarship, and I've just got a job at the Starbucks in Westchester."
"Wow, that's great," Jean said with a grin. "Congratulations. What major are you in?"
She paused.
"Feel free to stop me if this sounds like an Interview. I think I get a little too peppery with questions. Side effect of being a doctor."
"Comp sci. Happy to talk about it if you want, though. We could get a coffee?"
Jean smiled. "Of course," she said.
