Kyle tries to teach Topaz that sometimes it's okay to be proactive and punch. Backdated to January 27.

It turned out, with a little focused training, that Topaz actually could throw a punch. The thought still surprised her. Kyle, for whatever reason, was determined to make sure she could fight, and had been putting her through her paces at least once or twice a week to make sure she was keeping up. And while she may not have been the strongest, being small certainly had its advantages. Like the ability to dodge.

"Stop moving you little devil woman!" Kyle mumbled through a mouthguard. Yes, he was moving at normal people not Kyle people speed but good grief Topaz was wiggly. She ducked out of a lunge and he spat out the mouthguard and let it hit the mat. "I mean don't stop but like, you gotta hit back sometimes."

"I'm looking for an opening!" Topaz said, although that wasn't quite true. She had already seen a couple, she just still wasn't sure about this whole hand-to-hand thing. She'd practiced on her own, using a pillow as a target, and it never felt like enough.

"You're avoiding." Kyle said. "Look, if all you ever do is run away from the guy trying to hit you, if he's me, he'll run you to ground and chew on your face. You can't like, forever look for just the right time to kick a guy in the balls. Sometimes you eat the punch and hit back." He was really just asking for a kick to the balls, but that's why he was practically religious about the cup.

It was incredibly tempting to hit or kick him while he was talking, but that was just unfair - sneak attacks on friends were mean. "Okay, okay," Topaz said, backing up. "For real this time. No avoiding. I promise."

"Okay, but like, after this we're gonna hit target pads until you remember that the best offensive isn't a good defense. That's a lie." He'd spat the mouthguard out because fuck he hated that thing and now it was on the floor, gross and wet and he took his eyes off Topaz just long enough to kick it away before one of them stepped on it.

"If you keep talking I'm just going to punch you." It wasn't mean if she warned him first.

Kyle made a 'oof' sound as Topaz's padded fist connected with his chest, and he swung out an arm to block her across the elbow as he slid back, -not- stepping on his mouthguard, but only barely.

Topaz didn't try to resist as Kyle swept her arm aside; rather, she went with the flow, twisting her arm away from him and immediately stepping to the side to dodge if he tried to retaliate.

Kyle was probably in the low percent of self-defense teachers because at this point he probably should have kept going, but, there'd been a breakthrough, and really, two minutes was probably a limit for normal people. Maybe. He thought. "See! An actual real punch! With like, tactics, or strategy, or, shit I get those mixed up!"

"Remind me to ask you about technical terms, then," Topaz said, but she was smiling. His excitement was contagious. Not that she'd ever let him know that. "Try again?"

"Hell yes. This is way more fun than making you hit a heavy bag for ten minutes." Kyle said, as he kicked the mouthguard across the floor. "No hitting the face, it's sharper than your hands."

Topaz smirked back, readying herself. "No face, don't worry." She was energized now, ready to go. It was going to be harder now that he was actually paying attention, but wasn't that the point? She took aim again.

"T, the day I'm worried about you hitting me is the day you don't need me to teach you this and I hand you off to someone meaner." Kyle said, flashing his teeth at her. "I mean, unless you wanna join Logan's fight class right now." Kyle thought it was fun as hell, but Kyle also could heal a black eye over dinnertime if he had to.

"Pass, ta." She took a quick step to the left and swung, aiming for his side.

"You sure? Sometimes he hands out beer after class." And sometimes he made Kyle buy the beers, but Topaz didn't need to know that, she was still small and squishy.

"Is that supposed to be incentive?" Topaz asked, making a face.

Kyle practically danced away from the swing punch. "Well, it is for me? I mean, you're British you already like beer warm and beans for breakfast, so it might be incentive?"

Topaz rolled her eyes, aiming another punch at his stomach. "Sorry, how long have you known me? Does any of it sound like it might be appealing?"

"The class or the beer?" Kyle asked. "Or beans? It could be beans, you're like, veggo to my meato." He stopped. "No, no, no, that sounded way wronger than I meant." came out. Sort of. It was just that in his attempts to not fumble over sounding like a weirdo, he actually got hit.

Topaz stopped as well, raising an eyebrow. "How about in exchange for me not holding that over your head for the rest of both our lives, however long or short they may be, we call it a day with you sending me to the punching bag and you can pay for dinner?"

"And then the student became uh, well, not the teacher but at least someone who could snark the shit out of the teacher without having to do situps." Kyle was more than happy to change that particular subject. "For reals. You want pancakes after ten minutes of bag work, or burritos?"

Topaz tilted her head, thinking. “Pancakes,” she finally decided, rolling her shoulders. “With chocolate chips.” Even she had her guilty pleasures.

"Totes pancakes then. Go hit the bag." Kyle waved at hand at the heavy bag, which currently had a picture of an actual yam in a wig taped to it. "I mean who doesn't want to punch that."

"Punching a horrible pun about our future dictator sounds like a great way to end the day," Topaz replied dryly, making her way to the bag.
