Sins of the Father || Just A Little Pain
Jul. 8th, 2018 01:27 pmHope goes to the med lab with pain. Nothing weird there.
"Hello? Anyone here?" Hope poked her head in one of the rooms, looking for one of the medlab folks. One hand was firmly pressed against her right side and she kept wincing as when she moved. "Dr. Grey? Dr. Reyes... anyone?"
“Hope, what seems to be the problem?” Laurie paused and looked up from the microscope she’d been peering into somewhat intensely. The Medlab had been relatively quiet today and she’d taken the time to do some research. She carefully packed away the slide she’d been working on and took off the gloves she’d used to throw them in the provided hazardous waste bin. “If you’d like to take a seat?”
"I think I'd rather stand." Hope replied as another wince stole over her face. "Moving only makes this more painful. Unless you want me to lie down somewhere so I don't have to move for a bit..."
“Where are you feeling the pain the most?” Laurie stood and walked over to Hope, gently tilting the girl’s head toward the light. Her eyes seemed clear, no sign of yellow and the pupils weren’t blown. “Have you been in pain long?”
"Right here." Hope nodded to where her hand was covering her stomach. "First I thought it were just some weird, early cramps, but this feels very different from normal."
“That could be a number of things.” Laurie gestured for Hope to precede her toward one of the Medlab beds as she picked up her stethoscope and a medical cart along the way. She gestured for Hope to lay down so she could palpate her abdomen. “How are your bowel movements of late?”
"Pretty normal." With another wince, she hopped on the bed and pulled the her blouse from her skirt before laying down. Immediately she pulled up her knees a bit to lessen the tension she felt in her belly. "What do you think this could be?"
“Given that you’ve had no problems with defecation, there’s the possibility of referred pain or stomach ulcers.” Laurie gently pushed Hope’s legs down, while she wished she could give the younger girl some pain relief it would only mask any symptoms that might tell them what the issue was. “Have you taken anything for the pain?”
"Some Midol when I still thought it were cramps, but nothing else." Hope gingerly tried to stretch her legs. "This pain reminds me so much of when I was ten if I am honest." She added as finally placed where she had felt the pain before.
Laurie knew from Hope’s medical files that she’d had her appendix out at that age, but there had been cases in the past of the same symptoms popping back up, something called ‘stump appendicitis’, the other option might be something like ‘Meckel’s diverticulum’. She needed a CT scan of the area to be sure.
“I’m going to need to give you a CT scan, just in case this is something more serious, which means I’m going to have to wheel you over there. I’ll try to be gentle however.”
"I am fine with whatever you need to do, as long as we get this sorted out..." Hope closed her eyes and gripped the edges of the bed to keep herself as quiet as possible. "I am still hoping it's nothing though."
Laurie was often the first to admit that her bedside manner, and indeed just her general behaviour toward people could be construed as cold. She didn’t often see an issue with it given that for the most part she wasn’t called upon to comfort people. There were benefits to doing emergency treatment, people were often in too much pain or knocked out and didn’t require conversations about the weather.
Still, if she’d been able to think of anything comforting, she would have made an effort for Hope. Laurie didn’t quite know what was going on yet, but the fact that her stomach had been perfectly fine when she’d palpated it and the presentation of her symptoms pointed to a much serious disease or problem.
“We’ll find out what’s wrong and we’ll fix it. Don’t worry.”
