Wade gets ambushed by a blood-covered Maya.

Maya was looking for Wade. She’d tried his room, and the various kitchens and tv rooms that an enormous house like Xavier’s Mansion had, she’d even tried the garage to no avail. You’d think it would be easy to find a man like Wade in a Westchester mansion given his distinctive style.

She was still covered in blood from Amanda’s wounds, but she hadn’t given anyone she’d asked time to question her, not when she was on a mission. He’d want to know that something had happened to Amanda, and as far as her father had been concerned, and as far as she herself felt, he was the only safe place in this entire mansion. She just had to find him now, and stick to him like glue.

Shooting was cathartic for Wade, which was why he was on the firing range. He emptied his current clip, then sat Bea down as he pressed the button to bring his target forward. Not having bothered with ear protection, he cracked his neck and waited for the ringing to die down a bit before he exhaled slowly, stretched his fingers out, and admired his work.

So far as bunnies went, he thought he'd made a pretty cute one out of all the bullet holes.

“Wade!” Maya slammed into him from behind, her hands fisting against his shirt as she clung. “We need to get out of here now, we need to find my Dad.”

Blinking down at the blood-spattered arms latched to his waist, knuckles white, Wade very carefully asked, "What happened?" Which, given the tone of his voice, could be translated to, Do I need to kill somebody? Who? Last known location and approximate direction of egress?

“I don’t know.” Maya’s voice was thick with tears as she clung to him, unable to let go or even to think beyond the sheer panic running through her head. “There was so much blood, Wade. They wouldn’t even let me stay with her.”

"Stay with who?" Wade asked, one palm dropping slowly to gently grip Maya's forearm. "I know this is difficult, chica, but I need some details before we can make any definitive decisions, alright? Take a few deep breaths for me, slow -- like when you're meditating. Then start from the beginning. Take that breath for me."

“Amanda.” Maya took the breath like he said, allowing her head to rest against the middle of his back as she continued to take breaths and let them out in slow, deliberate movements. “Amanda dropped into the tree house and she would have bled to death if I wasn’t there.”

Dammit, Wade thought. He gave Maya's wrist a brief squeeze. "You did good, kid. You must've been thinking fast on the fly to get her the help she needed so she'd be okay." He didn't want to pry for the kind of information that might leave her more traumatized by thinking about it, so he let the questions about where and how Amanda'd injured pass through his head, sure that someone would be able to give him updates on X-Force's team comm. At the very least, there'd be an incident report or something. "Your dad'll be really proud."

“Yeah.” Maya’s breathing had settled down slightly as she kept a count, trying to match her panicked thoughts to it. It helped that Wade’s body language, and thus her own, was quite relaxed. “There’s blood all over my tree house floor.”

"We can get that up," Wade said. "Don't worry." And if not, he knew some people he could call to get tips -- he was great at getting blood out of clothing, but not so much wood. "How about we get you cleaned up? I can definitely track your dad down, how's that sound? Skype him tonight, figure out when and where we might be able to meet up with him, right?"

"I'd like that." Maya's forehead lay against his back, her breathing now returned to normal as she slowly released the grip she'd had on his shirt. After another moment she stepped away from him and tried on a shaky smile. "Maybe we can skip the part where you saw me covered in blood? I don't want to give him a heart attack."

"Full disclosure -- I'm gonna tell him some stuff went down," Wade said. He could already imagine the look on his friend's face when he explained the gist of what'd happened. This was supposed to be a safe place for Maya and, for the most part, it had been. It was definitely better than her previous situation, even considering her clashes with people in the mansion and her attitude when she got there to begin with. Still, no parent wanted to hear about dangerous stuff happening in the vicinity of their kid.

At least, Wade figured they didn't. He wasn't actually a parent. He wondered if Willie's first reaction would've been to consider who he needed to kill to make it better. "But we won't give your dad all the details." Packing Bea up safely and efficiently, Wade made a mental note to clean her later. "Let's head inside. I've got some electronic tracking to ask Dom to do for me and you've got a shower to take." Finding out the rest of the information he needed about what'd happened to Amanda and the others could wait. Probably. Doug and Marie-Ange had been on that mission with her.
