Sooraya and Rogue -- Catching up
Oct. 19th, 2018 03:09 pm Sooraya picks Rogue up from school for a drive and a chat
Rogue gave a wave at a group of students while she waiting for her ride. September was one of her favourite months. Starting to cool down a little (although today was still a tad too warm for her liking), and no one questioned the ever present gloves or long-sleeves.
Glancing at her phone, she hummed to herself as she leaned against the flagpole. Occasionally, she looked up to see if Sooraya had arrived, and smiled widely when Rogue saw the vehicle. "Hey sugar," she called out, getting into the passenger side. "Thanks for the ride! I thought I'd meet Logan in town, but he got busy. You saved me a bus ride," she laughed. "And lord knows how much I hate the bus."
"I know... I have heard you about having to ride 'the bleeping bus' before." Sooraya carefully scanned the traffic before pulling into the stream. "I just don't get why you won't sign out a car from the mansion pool?"
"Too much road rage," Rogue joked, leaning back in the passenger seat. Her window was down and since she knew she was with friends, she took off her gloves and let her fingers trail in the air. It was refreshing after all day being gloved. "I dunno, I didn't think about it, since like I said, Logan was gonna meet me....and you're right. I probably could. Heck, I could probably even buy myself a car...why don't I have a car, Sooraya?" Rogue laughed and looked at her friend. "I'm in my 30s and I've never owned my own vehicle. Does this mean Clarice is right, and I'm totally NOT an adult yet?" She was in a good mood.
"You know... we regularly run around to fight the bad guys and save the world... and you wonder about not being adults." Sooraya drolly, rolling with her eyes. "I mean I am heading in my late twenties and I don't have a car of own either. Just as easy to use one from the mansion pool."
The older woman nodded, closing her eyes against the breeze. "Guess so. It was jus'...well, growing up in the South and all, it was kinda expected that your life follow a certain path, y'know?" She ticked the items on her fingers as she counted them off. "Go to high school. Go to college...maybe. Buy a car. Get married. Buy a house. Have kids. Rinse, lather, repeat, whatever. Sometimes, I still hear my momma's voice, glaring at me for not having kids or whatever."
"If that is what makes you adult, the whole mansion would be full of kids." Sooraya shook her head. "Besides, we should put some those so called adults through some of the things we've seen." A grim smile flashed over her face. "I bet things might seem somewhat different then..." Sooraya caught herself. "But let's not get to dark..."
Let's not get dark, indeed, Rogue thought. It had been quiet though, which always led her to wonder what was coming, but for now, yes, brighter futures. "God, can you imagine all of us trying to raise a bunch of little ones? Hard enough dealing with the teenagers," she laughed. "Besides, Xavier is technically the guardian for a bunch of us. I think he's on my paperwork, after Logan brought me here.....god, has it really been like 20 years ?" She made a face. "Screw being an adult -- I'm downright geriatric at this point!"
"I think it had been... twelve years for me..." Sooraya had to laugh. "This is scary! It's been over a decade! But something else... tell me how things are going with those kids at Bayville. Are they driving you nuts yet?"
Rogue shook her head. "Nope, I like it so far. I mean, the PAPERWORK is ridiculous, and I remember now why I hated doing any type of private practice, but at the same time, it's nice. I mean, I have all this education, so may as well use it, and I really do like being a counselor. So far, it's been okay, but hey, we're only a few weeks in and I haven't had any significant problems yet." She leaned forward and rapped her knuckles on the dashboard. "Knock on wood....although some kids are already coming in to talk about college applications. Goodness. Glad that's done and over with for me."
"Yeah, I remember that." Sooraya grinned as she pulled into a parking lot of one of the local malls. "I do miss studying, though I don't miss the whole shebang around it."
"Learning," Rogue corrected Sooraya. "The best part is the learning, which comes from the studying. I mean, there's loads of free classes and stuff if you're interested in it, it's nice to see the different things you can study. Sometimes, I think when this is all said and done, I might start an apiary or something random like that. I got all this invulnerable skin, so why not?" She laughed. "Or be a cheesemonger. Be a lady of leisure. Whatever. Logan can support me...since, let's be honest -- do any of us really have any bills?"
"Money isn't the issue..." Sooraya shook her head. "Between training, my work for the Institute, the Underground and trying to get something close to X-Corps of the ground I'm pretty swamped."
"You're bringing back X-Corps?" Rogue had never really found herself drifting towards the humanitarian, international work that X-Corps did, but she's always respected it. As much as she was a counsellor, she enjoyed working things out with her fists...probably a side effect of absorbing Logan so much. "That's gotta be a lot of work, since well....the world is a little topsy turvy these days."
"The projects that actually helped people are difficult to do at the moment. I don't have the people and the facilities. What I'm focusing on most is setting up some kind on international monitoring of the situation of mutants around world. The network that I took over when the Professor left for Muir has been very helpful." Sooraya calmly explained her plans.
Rogue gave an approving nod. "Wow, that's awesome, sugar. I'm so proud to hear that. Is Angelo helping out again, or is it all on you?" She leaned her head back on the headrest and sighed. "I gotta say, I wish we didn't have to do all these things. I mean, this weird 'walking on eggshells' thing is exhausting. There's such a tenuous balance between us and the non-mutants, that it just makes things hard. We're like one thing away from either side 'winning' and that's such a dumb word to use....but it's like we're on the brink of war, you know?"
"Some'd say we already are war, but it's a cold war. Still, both pictures are not really nice to think about." Sooraya sighed. "Sometimes I hate that feeling of tension... like only one spark is needing to light the fire and for things to blow wide open." "Exactly." Ugh, what a way to bring down the conversation, Rogue thought to herself. "It is what it is, I guess. We jus' keep on keepin' on, right? And this is a good first step, I think."
"True. And we should try to enjoy life whenever we can." Sooraya signaled a stop to the discussion by digging her debit card from her purse. "How about we go and do just that?"
Where they at the coffee shop already? Rogue hadn't even noticed their drive, she was so engrossed with their conversation. "Sounds good to me! And hey -- I'm buying! Got me a j-o;b, after all!"
"Alright, but next time it's my turn." Sooraya smiled as she tucked the card away with one hand, pushing the door open with the other. "I'll go for one of the large tea's."
