Rogue and Jean go roller-blading and reminisce about their childhoods
"Holy Hannah, my shins are achin'!" Rogue leaned down and rubbed them furiously. "How did I let y'all talk me into this again?" She raised an eyebrow at her friend while smiling. "Or was it the promise of ice cream... I can't remember, and I don't rightly care. It's a beautiful day to be outside anyways, so thanks for dragging me out."
Even if she was exhausted already. It was one thing to be physically fit, and able to kick anyone's ass. It was another to use rollerblades after years of not being on them. She didn't realize her balance was so off. Maybe she had an ear infection.
Swirling the top of her cone, she sighed happily. "Yup. Today's a good day."
Being a telepath had certain advantages, like being able to stay upright on roller skates without anyone noticing. Jean laughed as she covered her ice cream cone with hot fudge.
"You're welcome," she said. "It's been forever since I've been to the Park, or roller-skated. It is pretty nice, once you get the hang of it." She eyed the ice cream cone. This was potentially problematic but she didn't care.
Rogue had also seen the problem, and was motioning to a bench. "Come on, let's sit down and enjoy these calories. We worked hard for them, ya know."
Jean considered Rogue's words. "We did," she confirmed, carefully making her way toward the bench and taking a seat
"I like to watch the tourists sometimes. They have such wide eyes. They always look up, like the buildings are going to engulf them."
Rogue gave a soft smile, lost in her own memories. "You know, when I first came here ...god, what like 10 years ago....jesus.... anyways, I was totally lost here. We don't have these kinds of buildings in Georgia, so I can relate. " She laughed. "I was probably that wide-eyed tourist, clinging onto Logan for dear life, trying to tell him how much I didn't want to stay, I wanted to get back on the road, get lost in those back roads..." She ate her ice cream in peace for a while, still reminiscing. "Maybe that's why whenever we have a weekend free, we go out to the cabin. I really feel such a connection out there now, and even more so with Logan next to me." she gave a bashful grin. "I never thought I'd have him the way I do ... it's amazing."
Jean smiled. "So you guys are still doing well? That's great," she said.
"I spent my undergrad here. We came up sometimes before I got shipped off to England as a kid and I always thought it was so magical. That Home Alone 2 movie kinda helped that. I hoped I'd get lost in New York."
"Why would you wanna get lost here?" Rogue had seen those movies too but they hadn't elicited that kind of response. She wrinkled her nose. "I mean, sure the hotel life seemed nice, but bad guys? And setting traps? And doing all the stuff we do as adults?" she teased. "I was an innocent little thing."
Jean laughed. "I don't want to get lost here anymore. But I loved that movie when I was a kid. At least, the happy ending. The traps sounded fun, even if the evil burglars weren't. I liked that he found justice for the toyman. Even if he was a a bit of a sociopath. And to end it with a luxury suite in a hotel and dozens of Christmas presents? Second grader me was over the moon."
This was true. "The presents didn't even make any sense to me. When I saw that, I was all 'whaaaat?' I'm pretty sure my parents had told me that Santa only gives kids one present at a time. That movie sure turned them into liars." Rogue gave a little smile. It was also so conflicting, when she sat and thought about her parents. Once upon a time, they'd loved her, and accepted her and given her a good foundation to life. And then her genes kicked in. "Mind you, they also told me that the ice cream man only played music when he was out of ice cream, so I guess they were already liars, huh?"
"Wow, that was pretty genius...and kinda mean," Jean said with a mixture of thoughtfulness and pity. She was silent a moment, staring at her melting ice cream cone.
"My parents felt bad for shipping me off to school after I manifested so they tried to make up for it at Christmas. We'd have the tree and stockings and dinner. And for a few days a year I forgot everything had changed until they dropped me off with Moira.."
Rogue gave Jean what she hoped as an understanding look. "At least they took you back every year," she offered lamely. "And Moira's lovely. I went to go and get Rahne a few years back, and got to really meet her. That whole place is nice ...but it's not a home, I agree with that." She concentrated on her cone, licking it as fast as she could to ensure it didn't get all over her gloves. She'd forgotten to bring a spare. "Must've been weird growing up there."
"Well, it definitely wasn't normal," Jean mused. "But Moira tried to do what she could. So did Charles. Of course I tried to escape a few times during my rebellious teenager phase, but the nearby mainland countryside was boring as hell."
She took a bite of her cone with a satisfying crunch and finished it off, leaning back against the bench.
"You about ready to continue on this magic carpet ride?"
"Lead the way," Rogue said, trying her best to get back on her feet. Stretching her arms out for balance, she looked down until she felt she could look away. With a smile, she brushed her hair away from her face. That damn curl was always escaping from her ponytail. "Let's see what we can find!"
Jean shot past her on the rollerskates. Luckily she had dressed more casual. Two grown women in business suits on rollerskates seemed a bit unusual.
"I'm thinking we should head for the Zoo. I hear there are some new baby animals that I'm dying to squee over," she mused.
"Oh my god, you said the magic words!" Rogue laughed and tried to catch up with her friend, knowing already it was impossible. That's okay. Baby animals were worth it.
