Alani finds Sooraya in the main kitchen. They discuss how she came to be there.
"I was just making some tea." Sooraya poured the hot water over the fragrant tea in the pot. "Would you like some as well?" Moving over to the kitchen cupboard, she pulled down one mug, then looked over to Alani if she had to pull down a mug for her as well. "It's rooibos with some ginger and other spices."
Alani had been glancing around the kitchen but turned her attention to the other woman when she began to speak. "Tea? Oh! Yeah - Yes. If you don't mind, I'd love some tea." This is accompanied by a lopsided, toothy grin before she made an attempt to school her features. "I'm not usually so scattered. I'm still getting used to the whole ‘mansion of mutants' thing."
Sooraya winced a little as she handed over one of the mugs she was holding and took a seat at the table as well. "Yeah, I can imagine that takes a lot of getting used to. What happened, if you don't mind me asking?"
Alani drops her gaze to the mug as she accepts it, cradling it in her hands despite the heat. "It sounds silly, doesn't it? Do you mean what happened to out me? Or what brought me here?" She meets Sooraya's eyes before flashing a smile. "I like to think of myself as an open book, but I just want to make sure I'm answering the right question first. Then we can get into the dramatic retelling if you want."
"Either or both." Sooraya responded easily after sipping her tea. "Which ever you want to share. Many of us here do have a bit of a story, but don't always feel that comfortable telling. So please don't feel you have to do so." After a moment she added: "Though now you have me curious though."
"I guess, the first isn't really news. I'm a surfer-" There's a pause, as Alani stares down at her tea before taking a sip. "- I was a surfer. I kinda got filmed using my powers." She's quick to smile, attempting to show that there were no hard feelings about her situation. "So that's the first story. I'm here, because I tried to use my known mutant status to try and - I don't know - make things better? But some people didn't really like that, and they mailed my family a bomb. Mr. Xavier heard the news and offered me a safe place to stay and take some college classes." Thinking that was enough of a rundown, another sip of tea was taken. "The dramatic retelling is much more riveting, I swear."
"Trying to make things better?" Sooraya zoomed in on that interesting detail. "Yeah, I can see how that can be risky, especially if you were speaking out in some way. I can understand why'd you want to do it though... I used to work for an NGO that helped mutants worldwide and I am trying to get some of that work going again."
"Well, yeah, I mean I look the way I do and I got outed the way I did, so I thought why not use that. Though, I just stuck to everyday things. Nothing huge." Alani perks up, straightening her posture at the news. "Damn, I mean, that sounds amazing! I wish I could do something like that." She shifts to set down her mug before clasping her hands together to keep from activating her power in her excitement. "I don't know what I could offer but if there's anything I could do to help, lemme know. I would love to help out with something like that."
"So far it's mostly research we are trying to do, keeping an eye on the situation world wide and making contacts." Sooraya tried to temper her expectations. "But extra hand with research are always welcome. Do you happen to speak any foreign languages well?"
"Okay, cool, cool, cool." Alani flushed, reaching out to take the mug again in an attempt to drown her embarrassment. "I, uh, speak some Maori and once I tried to learn Spanish on a cellphone app. Other than that, I speak fluent English and know how to say 'hello' in Anishinaabe. Yes, I am relatively useless in the language department. But I'm willing to learn."
"Maori is one we haven't yet and you'll never know when it will come in handy, plus learning one is always good. We have someone here whose ability is pattern recognition, so he speaks all languages. We can always ask if he is willing to tutor you in one you are really interested in?" She let the question to which language that was hang in the air.
"That's my power, knowing Maori." Alani's first instinct had been to make a joke, so after a cracking a smile she continued. "But, in all seriousness, that would be amazing. I've always wanted to learn more languages, especially if it could help. I could also redownload the app and actually try and learn Spanish, if that's easier. I don't wanna be a nuisance."
"Alright. Why don't we look into it further more when you are a little more settled?" Sooraya considered a little further. "As well as showing you some more that I hope to be doing later on. And if you have any idea's of your own you'd like to look into I am open to that as well."
"Perfect, that sounds like a plan." Alani took a moment to think and finish her tea. "I would love to see your plans, eventually, too. I, er, don't really know if I even have any ideas. But if I come up with any, you'll be the first to know."
"Well, just dropped a lot of new information on you, so that is not so strange." Sooraya finished her own tea. "It was good meeting you, Alani, but I have a phone call. Come find when you are ready?"
"It was a pleasure to meet you, Sooraya, I'm glad I got to take up some of your time." With that, Alani was quick to stand up and nod slightly.
“See you later, Alani!”
