X-Men Mission: Skull Island 7
Dec. 22nd, 2018 08:51 pmWu confirms the monstrous nature of the island.
"So, this whole island is essentially... what, a wrestling ring between giant animals and giant... monsters?" Kane said slowly, as Wu nodded.
"Exactly. According to the Headwoman, it has been this way as long as tribal history goes back. I mean, take a look at that wall they built. There's fifteen foot bones in there. Armor plates from absolutely no animal I've heard of the size of a bus. Whether we want to believe it or not, there's something bloody fundamentally wrong about this place and it expresses it with impossible monsters." Wu said, as she and the two remaining members of her crew put together their things. "After burying two good people since landing here, I don't need to understand it to take it seriously."
"How have the locals survived so long?" Kurt wondered. "Just by trying to keep out of the way of the creatures?"
"It's worked before," Scott allowed, "When you're faced with something that's just that much of a threat, you stay below it's attention...at least until you're in a position to beat it."
Miles shivered at the thought of living on a remote island that actively is trying to kill you. If he were a native, he'd build a canoe and paddle out as far as he could. "This is actual literal King Kong," he said. "Or, like, Pacific Rim but without Mako Mori and sweet-ass mecha. So, you know, absolutely terrifying."
Xavin nodded. "This is bullshit. I mean, you don't just adapt to giant monsters trying to eat you."
"We'll let the others worry about the science back at the Blackbird. Ma'am, we're going to escourt you back to our landing site. My dad has a ship waiting to take you off the island."
"Your- oh fuck, I see Kane tapped his superhero son for this mission. Bloody brilliant." She said with a laugh.
"Yeah, it's a real treat that he thinks of me when horrible monsters are involved." Garrison turned back to Scott. "Retrace our steps?"
Scott glanced back at the path they'd just trodden before nodding, "We know it's relatively safe and hopefully no-one else decides to stumble across it till we manage to get back. Spider-Man, you're on point, Kane bring up the rear. The rest of us will stay in the middle. Nightcrawler, if we get jumped, protect them and get them out of here."
"Straight to the beach", Kurt agreed with a nod.
Miles wanted to ask if Scott was joking. Put him up in front? Sure, he was fast and his spider-sense would be at best use in the lead. But still. That was a sign of a lot of trust, and he had to ask himself what he had done to deserve it. Miles gulped and, for the thousandth time, was grateful he wore a mask as part of his costume so no one could see his face. "Right. In front. Gotcha. Monsters come at us, you'll know by all the screaming and flailing of limbs."
Xavin held out a hand and gave him a fistbump and slightly mad grin. "You got this, Spider-boy."
Unfortunately, at they reached the plateau, the plains they'd crossed were now full of flying insects, the size of large birds with long wicked probosci and spiked legs. Instead, they backtracked down to the beach and started back the long way, hugging the shorecliffs in order to reach the jungle track to the plane. Unfortunately, an hour in, as they paused by the cliffs, the sea started to boil. Kane looked down, trying to see more clearly.
"Is it an underwater eruption?" He said before a massive fish breached the surface, clenched in the jaws of what could only be described as a huge, hominoid wolf. The explosive force carried the creature and its catch over the cliff and it landed less than twenty metres from them, tearing at its prey.
Kurt stopped in his tracks, looking for a route that let them give the creature a wide berth. “If we do not disturb its meal, perhaps it will ignore us.”
Scott tilted his head to the side thoughtfully before he nodded slowly, his voice barely rising above a whisper, "You know, that makes absolute sense to me...lets give him a wide wide berth and hope that the fish is all he wants to eat today." Gesturing, the man indicated the team to start moving again, skirting around the creature and it's prey.
They did not get far before the creature realized it had company. It looked up from its half-eaten meal and let out an ear-shattering roar when it spotted the humans. Miles could barely hear the clang of his spider-sense over it. "Yeah, well, no duh I'm in danger now," he castigated himself, even as he flung himself directly in the charging monster's path as it swung a massive fist — nearly as big as Miles himself — and the young hero caught it before it could make paste of everyone else. "A little help!" he called, struggling to hold onto it. The thing was every bit as strong as it looked.
"Hang on, kid..." Kane muttered as he crashed into the thing's bent elbow. He really needed to start a class on how to approach super-strong things by using the joints and leverage. The blow sapped away any momentum, allowing Kane to snap two quick jabs to the throat before dodging back from a set of razor sharp claws. "Fucker's fast too..."
Xavin just kind of lumbered in and leaned against on of the other legs, weight pushed into the calf. Lean and push until the leg shifted, tipping it to one side. They rolled away from the claws and stood, panting.
As the creature tipped Scott took advantage of the moment to add it it's motion, a red beam of energy spearing out, slapping into it's chest with enough energy to help it flip over as the man gestured to teh path. "I think that'll keep it for a while, let's roll and get out of here," sooner rather than later, Scott had no doubt they could take the creature, but it wasn't the only nearby monstrosity, of that he was sure and facing too many of them would wear out even this team.
Kurt nodded and hurried towards the path with a wary eye on the creature. “We should be more than halfway there now.”
"We should be off this fucking island. This intel is far more important than scoring points against giant freaks. So, bloody well shall we?"
"The lady makes a point." Kane said, nodding to Scott as they formed up again. "Doubletime. Let's get out of here."
