Julian finds Tandy on the floor of her office at the food bank. After waking her up, she insists she is fine and dismisses it as overworking and not eating enough.
Julian looked at his watch again, becoming annoyed that only thirty seconds seemed to have passed since the last time he'd looked. Pulling his phone from his jacket pocket he checked the text from Tandy, which still said 'Five More Minutes.' This was, of course, fifteen minutes ago, and they were risking running into rush hour traffic if they didn't leave soon. With a resigned sigh, Julian locked the doors on his car with a chirp and sloughed his keys into his pocket before heading inside.
The Food Bank was busy for a Saturday night, but he'd been there to see Tandy enough that the staff didn't try to stop him as he headed through the checkout area, into the stock room. Navigating the maze of newly arrived donations, and dodging one overly aggressive forklift, and arriving at the office to find the door slightly ajar. With a light knock, Julian pushed it open, but discovered resistance as it hit something on the floor.
Peaking around Julian quickly moved in and knelt down next to Tandy's unconscious body, doing the quick assessment they taught the Gen X Students as part of their first aid training. It didn't look like she'd been hurt, but without the ability to rule out a head injury, Julian checked for a pulse and gave her a slight telekinetic pinch between her thumb and index finger. "Tandy," a hint of panic broke his voice and he tried to be very, very careful with the pressure he was applying. "Come on, Bow, wake up."
The whispers faded as Tandy moaned a bit before opening her eyes slowly. It was blinding to look at the light on the ceiling and for a moment, Tandy was transfixed before everything came to focus. "Jules?" Her eyes moved to Julian before she attempted to sit up on her own. The last thing she remembered was finishing up an email to one of their beneficiaries and then nothing. She didn't even remember getting up from her desk. "How long?"
"Easy," Julian tried to gently keep her from getting up too fast. "You sent me a text about fifteen...maybe twenty minutes ago," he took out his phone and started the quick field assessment they'd been trained to do, using the device as a flashlight to check her pupil dilation. "I don't think you're concussed, but we should get you to MedLab to be sure. What do you remember?"
Her head pounded but something kept her from telling him that and she felt her head shaking no, "I will be fine. I think I am just overworking. A good nights rest should be fine." Looking up at Julian and giving him a reassuring smile. "I had just finished wrapping up the emails. Maybe we should stay in the city tonight? It is a long drive back to the manor."
"You're sure? I mean, I could have a company doctor stop by my place to give you a once over if you'd prefer." One of his gloved hands covered hers for a moment, concern in his eyes as he met hers.
Tandy nodded again, "Yes. I think sleeping would make this all better. Maybe some food. I think I skipped dinner."
Julian clicked his tongue as he slowly helped her to her feet and gently let her down into a chair, "You know better than to do that ,Bowen." Resisting the urge to call out the irony of her skipping a meal while working at a food bank, Julian popped into the hallway and used his TeeKay to open a box of candy bars- removing one and bringing it back to his girlfriend.
"I know. Today was just really...eventful." She walked over to her desk and closed her laptop before grabbing her bag and jacket. It was like nothing had happened at all. "Shall we?"
Julian hesitated for a moment, trying to discern how much of Tandy's demeanor was an act, and weighing it against the fact that she seldom ever lied to him. "Only if you're sure you're okay," he finally said, pulling his coat closed and heading with her to the door.
[A few hours later, around 11:45 pm]
Tandy threw off the covers and left the bedroom quietly. Not even Nick or Harley moved in their sleep at the foot of the bed. The blonde continued to walk down the hallway and arrived to the kitchen where she poured herself a glass of water. Julian was worried, she knew that. She heard the whispers again, the familiar sounds of an old unwanted guest. Tandy eyes glossed over as the whispered continued to speak to her and lured her over to the front door. She put on her boots and a jacket before the front door opened just enough to let her through and she was out. It closed softly behind her.
She took the elevator down to the first floor and began the walk towards the Empire State Building. The lull of the whispers demanded it and Tandy was in no position to fight the calling.
