Nica and Jean train in the Danger Room and Nica experiments with her powers.

"Head's up!" Nica called to her teammate as the giant robot turned and raised its massive hand. "Blast incoming!" Nica was hovering in the air by the robot's head, trying unsuccessfully to distract it from Jean long enough for the other woman to evacuate the unlucky civilians who had been caught in the middle. With a frustrated growl, she flew straight at the robot's face.

"Hey, you overgrown tinker toy! I'm right here!" Jean's eyes widened. She'd been in this scenario before and knew a few of Scott's strategic touches to opponents.

"Spectrum, duck!" she said as she telekinetically yanked Nica out of the way just as the robot fired laser beams out of its eyes. The laser beams wound up carving a gash into the pavement, sending debris flying everywhere.

"Any other ideas?"

Part of the training was also helping the newer recruits find inventive ways to solve things. "Well, I suppose I could ghost through it and see if that does anything to the circuitry?" Nica did a barrel roll to avoid another blast, this time from the robot's hand. Apparently she'd finally gotten its attention. "But I don't know enough about what wavelength I'd need to use..." The thought was cut off as the next beam struck her squarely, something she hadn't been expecting since she was intangible when flying. The blast was some kind of energy beam and it messed up Nica's powers enough for her to abruptly drop out of the air.

With Nica falling, the robot took the opportunity to try to grab for her with it's massive hand, aiming to crush her like an egg. But an invisible force caught Nica before it could do that.

"Freeze scenario," Jean said as she flew toward Nica.

"Are you okay? What happened?"

Nica shook her head as if the clear it. "I'm fine," she said perhaps a little automatically. "What the? I was made of visible light energy, how did it manage to hit me?"

Jean steadied the descent as they made their way to the ground. "The Danger Room is equipped to try different battle tactics much like an opponent would. It was programmed not to pull punches in this scenario to try to capture its target," she said, then spoke to the air. "Interface," she said, as a digital keyboard and monitor sprung up and she searched through the battle log. She knew about medical science and studied how mutant powers worked, and having supplemental reference materials to help her understand were imperative.

"Looks like it...switched electromagnetic fields. Seems to have been effective. Something we'll have to plan for in the future. How did your body react when it happened? Are you still feeling any of the effects?"

If they could measure the symptoms and duration of the effect, Nica could make adjustments in the future. "See, that's cheating." Nica winced as she stretched a little. "But it does make sense. Damn, I'm going to have to come up with a way to counter that sort of thing. Maybe..." Her expression grew preoccupied as she pondered, before a grin appeared. "I think I've got it. Can you start it up again? I wanna try something."

Jean smiled. "You got it," she said, closing the digital interface. "Computer, restart simulation, go back 5 minutes," she said as the world around them shifted and twisted, with the giant robot fighting an invisible foe, until it was once more standing at the ready, prepared to attack and subdue anyone who got in its way. "Halt, mutant." Nica once more flew into the robot's field of vision, but this time, instead of trying to avoid the beams, she hovered in place. "Come and get me, tin can," she taunted, bracing herself. The robot fired, the beam struck... but this time, Nica absorbed the energy. Her light form flickered and pulsed and her expression was pained, but she held steady. Then her whole body lit up, the same colour as the robot's energy beam, and she blasted it right back into the metal face. The robot staggered back, warning klaxons going off. "Now, Marvel Girl! Take it down!"

Jean cocked her head to the side at Nica's display of power, but only for a moment, focusing her telekinetic power into a sharp edge that she shot at the robot. Sparks exploded from it's neck as the telekinetic 'saw' sliced through. She then gave one more telekinetic blast to help physics take it's course and the head snapped off, it's lighted eyes going dim. With the objective for the simulation being met, the world froze and everything began to disappear.

"Great teamwork," Jean said, raising her hand for a high five. "That part with the energy was new. I don't remember seeing that before."

Nica floated down to return Jean's high-five, panting a little. "Well," she said, solidifying and trying to catch her breath. "I absorb and channel energy on the EM spectrum, right? So I let my powers adjust for whatever the robot's energy beam was and sent it back." She grimaced. "A bit painful, but effective. It'll probably get better with practice, like running laps."

Jean's smile widened. "Clever. How were you able to determine what kind of energy it was and adjust? Did you just feel the difference?"

"Instinct? To be honest, I have no idea what sort of energy it was," Nica replied candidly. "I just... went with the flow? I know it's not exactly the scientific method and Dr. Reed would have a fit, but that's what happens when you give a polisci major a science power," she added with a laugh.

"There's nothing wrong with that," Jean said, motioning for her to walk with her as she headed toward the Danger Room doors. "We science types may never admit it, but many breakthroughs happened because someone decided to throw caution to the wind and see what would happen." She smiled wryly.

"But I'd probably recommend putting in a bit more practice to find out your limits. It's fine in here, but not the best idea out in the field."

"Oh, I know. That's why I'm putting in the DR hours, Doc. Practice makes perfect and all that."
