The X-Men scramble in response to SHIELD’s call, and get briefed by Agent Coulson.

"Let's move, move!" Garrison called out as he counted each of the X-Men as they hustled up the rear gangway and into the Blackbird. Unfortunately, the timing couldn't have been worse for available X-Men. Counting himself, only six in total were on hand to answer Coulson's call under the time deadline they were working with. Scott and Kurt had agreed to try and get back as quickly as possible to assemble reinforcements, but there wasn't time to wait. They were lucky Jean had been around, since they were also short on qualified Blackbird pilots.

"We're in." He hit the rear close button and called up to Jean. "Clear for take off!"

"Seatbelts please. We don't want to have to use a spatula to scrape anyone off the ceiling," Jean said idly over the intercom. It'd been a hot minute since she'd actually piloted the real Blackbird, but she kept her training up to date in Danger Room simulations so it came in handy.

"So what are we expecting in terms of security? Do we know if they have any way to detect the Blackbird when she's cloaked?"

Running a hand down his chest to make sure everything was secure, Matt slipped his headset on over his cowl. He had no idea how it worked, but it helped to dull the noise of the plane to something more manageable. He still had to deal with the unpleasant vibrations and other flying sensations, but he appreciated whatever tech it was that meant he could get off the plane and still be functional. "Not unless they have something that mimics my powers," Matt replied. Then again... they could have something like that. He had no idea.

"Coulson says the LZ is clear. But we'll know his intel is faulty if and when they start shooting at us." Kane replied, almost cheerfully. He went down the line, checking everyone's harness as he did so. As one of the physically powered mutants, he could confirm everyone else because he clipped in, trusting his powers to keep him safe.

"I'm good," Kitty waved Kane off with a laugh. She wasn't too worried about her harness, trusting her phasing ability to keep her from hitting anything even if she did break free. "Anyhow, I can always be the first one off the plane. Hard to shoot something that isn't solid. Or someone can start reading minds once we hit the ground.”

Betsy was busy checking all the clips were plugged to the correct buckles, but managed a smile at the comment. “I volunteer, since Jean will need to handle the landing. I imagine that’ll require a fair bit of concentration.” She kept her tone light, but her nervousness was palpable as she started going over the buckles again.

“Hey, at least we don’t need to worry about huge Viking dudes with giant hammers this mission?” suggested Nica cheerfully. Her issue was trying not to seem too excited about this mission – not only was she going to work with people she hadn’t done much with before such as Kitty, Betsy and Matt – but they were saving Captain America. How awesome was that?

"First rule of being an X-Man," Jean said with a smile as she started up the Blackbird and the overhead doors that were home to the basketball on top slid open to reveal the night sky.

"Always expect the unexpected."

Forty-five minutes later they were where they needed to be. Jean landed the plane in an inconspicuous spot as far away as she could get without being detected by AIM but close enough so they wouldn't be walking for hours.

"Alright, we're supposed to be meeting Agent Coulson here in a few minutes so he can give us the intel. Any questions?"

"A couple, but they can wait. To be fair, they're mostly about my fantasy football league. This way." The mild, plain looking man in the black suit who appeared waved them to follow. "I'm Agent Coulson. Agent Kane... I mean, Dominion. You're on mission."

It was only a five minute walk down to a clearing. There were signs that another vehicle had landed recently, crushing the undergrowth around the area. A fierce looking Asian woman met Coulson as they broke from the path.

"Activity has picked up. That evac is likely less than an hour away from happening."

"Fortunately, we got some backup. X-Men, this is Agent May, my second. Over there are Agents Fitz and Simmons from our Science and Tech division." Coulson said. "Medical EVAC grabbed Deathlok fifteen minutes ago. The Avengers are at least another hour out, and AIM will have the base evacuated along with the Captain before they arrive."

"So how do you see us doing this? Small teams?" Kitty asked, her eyes darting between Coulson and Kane. She wondered who the Asian woman was, but if they needed to know, she was sure Coulson would tell them.

"Three teams. Agent May and I will try and delay their evacuation. Two teams of X-Men infiltrate to free the Captain and to reach the control room to shut down the defenses. Agents Fitz and Simmons will provide support from here." Coulson said, looking over to Jean and Kane. "Assuming that works for you?"

"I think so. I can take Kitty and Betsy and hit the control room. Betsy can maintain the telepathic switchboard with you and Cap - I call him Cap - he might need medical attention." Kane said to Jean.

Jean nodded. "Yep, sounds good to me. And I'll take Matt and Nica," she said, grabbing her go bag with her medical supplies.

"If anyone needs any back up l'm sure you'll find a way to let us know either here," she said, tapping her comm, then her temple. "Or here."

Going over to stand with Jean, Matt thought the teams made sense in terms of powers and abilities. There was a good chance that Captain America would need a hand when they got him out and his powers, as well as Nica's in a different way, were both suitably long-range warning systems to keep Jean safe while she worked. Not that Jean couldn't defend herself, but it wasn't easy to do that and tend a patient.

While she realised it was mainly for her ability to act as a comms system, Betsy was happy to be assigned to some of the more senior X-Men. At least there would be someone to drag her out if things went terribly wrong. Not that they would, obviously, since everyone knew that they were doing. Right?

"Once you have the Captain and disable security, head back and meet us at the launch platform. There's a SHIELD strike incoming that if we get out ahead of, will disable the evacuation. Our forces should not be far behind to mop up the rest. Any questions?" Coulson looked around for a moment. "No? Let's go save a living legend."
