Back in the DR Control Room, Garrison and Kitty take some desperate measures.
Kane came back through the door to the control room, fuming. He was now dressed in one of the spare Xavier's sweatsuits that were stocked in the changerooms beside the DR and was barefoot.
"The physical overrides are frozen. When we were trying to take the room offline, I was attacked by what she called nanites. I don't know how they could kill the overrides, but I can bench ten tons, and Molly and I together couldn't budge them."
"What do you mean, attacked?" Kitty eyed the outfit he was wearing and half-thought about making a crack about the outfit change. After she looked at his face, she decided it was probably better not to.
"You tell me. They went after my omni-skin but it adapted and fried them. Molly thinks they might be in the DR systems, which would explain why the programming is going to hell." Kane dropped back into his chair. "Any way to confirm it?"
"I wonder if they could reach me if I phased," Kitty mused. "Don't think I want to test that though."
She stretched as she contemplated Kane's question, then leaned over the console. "Let me run a diagnostic and see what that gives us." Her fingers flew over the keyboard and she continued talking. "Do you think the others are safe out there? For that matter, are we safe in here? Think those nanites will go for the door?"
"They locked out the overrides, so I can't even manually open the doors of the DR. Whatever the plan is, I doubt it's in our best interests. If they compromise the safety protocols, intentionally or not, we could easily lose people in the room." That was always the nightmare scenario, which was why regardless of any upgrades or modifications, the safety systems in the DR always took priority.
"Should I phase through and check it out?" Kitty frowned. "Though I'm not sure how whatever these nanites are would interact with my phased form."
Kane shook his head. "That could disrupt parts of the program at the same time and there's no telling what could happen. If we electrocute everyone accidentally, Scott is going to be pissed." Kane said, tapping at the shutdown keys as if they magically might be operational again.
"That and they'll be, you know, dead." A dry tone entered Kitty's voice. She puzzled over what to do, hesitating as the answer came to her. This really might not be a good idea... but what choice do we have? It wouldn't be the first time the X-Men have leapt into the unknown. Her voice was still hesitant as she spoke, however, revealing how uncertain she felt of her own proposal.
"It's not ideal but... there's the virtual intelligence," she said. "This isn't the best circumstance for testing but maybe that's our best option right now."
"I thought Viv was only half way through testing?" Since they accidentally turned the Danger Room into a quantum gate, a virtual intelligence had been under development for the room in order to create a second layer of computing power without concentrating it all with a singly system, hopefully to avoid a repeat. They'd been testing it slowly; carefully. "Can it - what, out think the nanites?"
"It's got a better shot than we do, doesn't it?" She drummed her fingers on the table. "At least it might be able to harness the systems somehow and get us to the overrides. Maybe."
"You know the tech better than I do." Kane walked over to the new console they'd installed. He flipped open the cover and with a deep breath, pressed the large blue button. The whole thing hummed for a moment, and the holoprojector glowed for a moment before a flickering projection of a waveform appeared.
{Good afternoon, Katherine. Good afternoon, Garrison. I am the Danger Room Virtual Intelligence Version 7.6462. You may refer to me as Viv if you wish.}
"Alright." Kitty took a deep breath, looking over at Kane for a long minute before she turned back to the console. "Hello, Viv. I think we have a problem..."
