Returning to the mansion from the city after a couple nights, Matt felt...well, he had a new phone and that helped a lot. He also had a plate of warm cinnamon rolls that were baked fresh earlier that morning. They'd been warm still when he'd bought them, but he'd had to re-warm them by the time he arrived back. That was alright. Knocking on Darcy's door, he could hear her inside her suite, but he didn't want to be too much of a creeper. That was just rude. "Special delivery!" he called through the door.
Darcy shuffled to the door, nudging a pair of shoes behind the door on the way. "Door's always open to you, especially when you bring me treats," she rasped out, a grin blooming on her face as she saw the plate. "There's a tray table mm... about five steps forward and two to your... right?" She twisted briefly to make sure. "Yes. Computer chair on the other side of it unless you want to sit in the blanket nest on the bed."
"The blanket nest is yours," Matt assured her, setting the cinnamon rolls on the aforementioned tray and taking a seat. "Do you want coffee or anything?" He hadn't brought that but he was happy to go get some from the kitchen if she didn't have any in her suite. He was not only nice like that, but he had a caffeine addiction to feed himself.
"Electric kettle if you'd like some Earl Grey or a Breakfast tea blend, but no coffee," Darcy replied apologetically, settling back into her pile of blankets. "Not coordinated enough to keep loose sugar in here before I'm fully awake unless we want a legion of ant minions."
"Okay.... but what do you want?" he could drink tea, it was possible. It had even happened before.
"I don't have a strong preference. If you want cinnamon rolls right now, I can heat up some tea, but if coffee is the preferred caffeine vessel we can go get some." Tea first thing got Darcy coherent enough to not be a disaster in the kitchen, but she'd already had a cup that morning.
Getting the kettle going didn't take long and a moment later it was burbling away gently as it heated the water. "The cinnamon rolls are already warm. No sense in letting them cool again. How are you feeling?" it didn't take too long to find mugs and the aforementioned tea bags. Most of the suites had the same layout, which made things easier.
"Sore, a little dumb, worried? I mean. I'm.. gonna be fine, I mostly just got...slightly electrocuted? And the strangulation, but..." she trailed off, focusing on plating a few of the cinnamon rolls for both of them. "Nerves in my left arm and hand are still acting up, the throat... Laurie saved my fucking life getting the rogue hand off me so fast, and got shitty repayment for it." She accepted one of the mugs of tea when offered, savoring the warm liquid on her throat.
"Oh?" he asked, not sure what she meant by her comment about Laurie. "I'm glad you're not still sick in the medlab. That sounds terrible," He'd had his share of injuries, but those sounded especially painful and bothersome.
"Yeah, uh... only thing I had access to when the nanites in the arm attacking me jumped to her actual arm was the little usb stun gun on my keys. So I stunned her arm and because we are a dramedy of dumbasses, also myself in the process. But the bulk of the electricity went into her arm. Which is why I'm here and she's still in medical." She shoved the guilt down and tore off a bite of cinnamon roll, popping the piece into her mouth. The balance of sweet roll with the tang of the icing prompted a hum of appreciation. "Did you make these? Because if you did I might have to propose. They're so good."
"Ah," he hadn't known all that. Matt had been busy with the others who had enhanced senses finding the nanites and clearing them out. "Well. These things happen when everything goes to hell in a handbasket. It wasn't deliberate or intentional," but it was apparently going to cause Laurie to deal with issues she never bothered dealing with.
Blushing, he shook his head, "I would love to claim credit, but I didn't even supervise. I bought them," they were delicious though, all soft and ooey gooey. "They're not actually that hard though if you've got a kitchen aid. They just take a lot of time," not that he'd ever made them himself, but his uncle's had made them plenty.
"Aww are you blushing, Murdock?" It was adorable. It made Darcy want to reach out and see how much darker the blush could get. She ruthlessly pushed those feelings into a pit with a mental chastisement of 'JUST FRIENDS MORON' and 'don't make it weird, you hate when people make it weird'. "Credit for knowing where the good bakery is then. I've made them before, but it's nice to have options. And these??? Killer option my dude."
"Do you hate yourself?" Matt asked before he could stop himself. "Sorry," he blushed even more, hating it, but unable to stop, "My uncle made croissants once. That's what he said. You only make them if you hate yourself. They were delicious though."
Darcy's body shook with the force of the laughter Matt's comments inspired. "Cinnamon rolls aren't NEARLY as bad as croissants. I think my hands stay too warm to get a good croissant dough. Rolls are more forgiving. Your uncle sounds more patient than me."
"My uncles raised me and Clint. Of course they have the patience of saints," the years where they were in the house together, even though they weren't actually that many, had been insanity and it really hadn't lessened until Matt moved out for college. Still, it ramped right back up whenever they returned for a visit. "And yes, the key to cinnamon rolls, is unflavoured dental floss. And banishing 14 year old me from the kitchen because I will try to eat them all," and nothing had changed since he was 14. "I would save you one though."
Was that flirting? Maybe he should stop that? He was dating Foggy. Darcy was just easy to talk to though and having fun with. Ugh. Rein it in, Murdock.
"Oh yeah, the both of you? As teens? Definitely one of the signifiers for sainthood, if I remember my coffee-fueled Wikipedia binges correctly." She could almost imagine a teenage version of Matt trying to sneak fresh cinnamon rolls out of the kitchen. "Did you have Clint act as the distraction so you could run off with the pan of fresh cinnamon rolls?"
"We took turns," because they both enjoyed the challenge each role brought. And the spoils of victory when they succeeded. "One time, they were for some bake sale or something, I don't remember. It was important. And we'd been told not to touch. But of course we took them. And ate them. And not only were grounded from everything except breathing, we ate ourselves sick," it was a fond memory now. At the time, it had been life coming to an end. Teenage dramatics at their best.
"Ooh, Grandma would've well.. maybe a smack with a spatula for it if she caught me in the act, but most likely she would've worn me out with extra chores for a few weeks after I helped do the remaking, honestly. Mucking the barn for two weeks straight as punishment was a solid deterrent to not repeat my crimes," Darcy replied with a laugh. "Speaking of sick, I can't believe we just ate our way through that plate of cinnamon rolls. When I moan about this later, remind me that I signed up to be full of delicious, sugar-fuelled regrets."
Burping gently, Matt shook his head, "No regret. We'll work it off in the gym or whatever," he worked out religiously and given how devout he was, that was saying something. Darcy wasn't as interested in working out, but it was hard not to at least some given being X-Men. "No barns in NYC. Only horses I've seen are the ones the cops ride in Central Park."
"Mm, no horses. Just alpacas," Darcy said. "Adorable menaces, excellent fiber for crafting." She wrinkled her nose "...and good poop for pastures or gardens. Small veggie farm too, but that was mostly just for us. We'd trade the normal excess with neighbors for things we hadn't grown that year, or we'd preserve it for winter." The only thing she was going to work out from these cinnamon rolls today was working herself into a nice little carb nap. "What else are you doing today, aside from feeding post-distress damsels?"
She knew an awful lot about farm animals. Part of Matt just thought that was typical Darcy randomness. Part of Matt was highly concerned. "You...don't do rodeo or anything, right?" he asked, unsure if he wanted an answer. He wasn't a country boy even if he did technically live in Westchester county now instead of the city. He was a city rat. "Mmmm, nap? Maybe find a new podcast? And some laundry," super exciting, but he was feeling very chill.
Darcy shook her head. "No, nothing like that. I can ride a horse, but I can't do anything fancy on one, despite some enthusiastic attempts as a child." Her left elbow twinged at the memory. "I just grew up on a small alpaca farm." Her plate and mug clinked as she set them on the table. "A carb nap sounds great. Laundry not so much." She glanced at the clock and her eyes widened. "Should probably get going on those chores though, I can't believe we've been sitting here indulging so long."
She shuffled out of bed and followed Matt to the door, throwing her arms around him impulsively in a tight hug before he opened the door. "Thank you for the cinnamon rolls. And the company," she said into his neck. "I really needed it."
