Kyle explains to Maya who Brand is and why they're helping someone like her.

Maya ducked into a hallway not far from where the others had gathered to go over the packets Garrison had given them. She didn't want to have this conversation in front of the Federal agent, and possibly end up causing some kind of incident.

What the hell, Kyle? she signed when they were out of the line of sight

"My ASL is not good enough for this. One sec." Kyle signed quickly and then pulled his phone out. "Kay, I am gonna try for voice to text." He said, waiting for Maya's phone to flash before continuing.

"Remind me to mock you for not studying, and then make you study while you have me doing jumping jacks and 5 mile runs," Maya said, switching to spoken language as she looked down at her phone.

Kyle raised one hand, claw out and middle finger up, and waved it over Maya's phone. "You try learning sign when you can't bend your fingers right." He sent back. "Anyway. Look that thing wasn't about Brand."

"You finger spell alright," Maya noted, but she took his point with a nod, wondering what he meant about Brand though. "So what was it about? she asked.

"Look, sometimes we're gonna get asked for help from people who are jerks. It doesn't matter, because we're not helping them, not really." Kyle explained. "Walk with me. Food time." He added in ASL. "Brand's a bitch, but the people she wants us to help still need our help."

"Do you ever stop eating?" Maya asked, but it was the sort of well-intentioned ribbing you gave to a friend, no real heat to it. She followed him as he moved further into the complex, contemplating what he'd said. "Is it always like that though? Having to make compromises with asshats just to get good things done? I thought being a hero would have more capes and less kissing ass."

Kyle walked mostly backward so he could make best of the messy melange of sign, texting, and Maya's lip-reading skills. "It's, yeah, it's always like this. No capes, lots of ass-kissing, and we get to save lives sometimes." He sent the required meme of Edna Mode's "no capes!" to Maya's phone. "And no, I stop eating sometimes. Just not when I'm awake."

"I think you'd still eat even if you weren't awake." Maya teased, but she continued onwards as she glanced at her phone, having felt it vibrate, and then raised an eyebrow at Kyle's meme. "You're so old, you know that right? That meme is ancient."

"Yeah, I'm an old as fuck millennial, stop being cringe." Kyle retorted, fingerspelling where he couldn't remember the signs. "For real, if you want to do the X-Men, you're gonna have to understand that sometimes people are shitty about our help. You do it anyway because it's not about you getting a hug, it's about helping people, especially mutant people not end up dead."

"Sometimes being heroic sucks balls," Maya said with a wry smile. She didn't like what they were doing, or the people they were doing it with but if she'd learned anything in life it was that you almost never got to choose your moments. You just got to choose what you did with them when they came. "And I don't care what you say, you're still as ancient as the hills, Grandpa."

"Damn right. Old as balls." Kyle signed and then paused. "Hold on. Is balls older than fuck? I think it's younger, so I was right the first time. Right? Shit. I should have paid more attention in biology."

“Definitely older than fuck, but less old than ‘holy shit, you’re old’” Maya replied with a laugh, pushing him to get him going again. “Come on, Legolas, good food waits for nobody.”

"We literally have archers here. I'm the weird tracker, not the elf." Kyle grumbled, signing and sending emojis as a sort of extra punctuation. "Ugh, don't make me Tolkien nerd at you. I'm already out of any kind of cool cred."
