Maya & Darcy | Unfortunate News
Nov. 4th, 2021 03:43 pmDarcy decides to inform Maya about Topaz's disappearance in person.
Darcy pressed send on the text letting Maya know she was at the door, then knocked firmly. She tried to compose herself while she waited for the younger woman to answer the door, but there was nothing she could do about the red eyes. Still, better to get this over with instead of letting Maya find out through the journals. She could hold it together for a little longer.
When the door opened, she gave Maya a wan smile. "I've got some rough news," she signed carefully. "Can we sit?"
Maya gave her a once over as if checking her for physical damage before she waved Darcy in and proceeded to shut the door behind them before she led the way into the small living room. She didn't have a roommate at the moment, and frankly, she preferred it that way. She'd had enough of sharing quarters with other people to last her a lifetime, especially since them just being around her made her twitch like crazy.
"You want a drink or something?"
"Water, please?" Darcy signed, taking a seat and dropping her face into her hands with a sigh.
A few minutes later she straightened up, making sure Maya could see her hands and lips as she started to haltingly talk and sign. "I don't know all the sign for what I'm about to tell you, but you probably want to sit down for it. I didn't think a text or mansion-wide broadcast was an appropriate way for you to find out."
“I got my cochlear back last week, hence the bandages.” Maya noted, sure that Darcy probably just thought it was from the injuries she’d suffered during the X-man mission. It had seemed the perfect time to just get it done. “They’ll take a little while to heal but I can hear you.”
She hadn’t needed to get them done, but she had chosen to.
“Just tell me, okay? Worse that’s going to happen is I throw something but not at you, unless you think you’ve done something?”
"Sorry. I'm.. not usually the one doing this. There was in incident while we were finishing packing and moving Avalon earlier. Creatures attacked from the wormhole, we all fought back but the numbers were just... overwhelming, so Topaz sounded the alarm for us to just get the fuck out. A.. And we did, except." Darcy's breath hitched as she bit back the sob that kept trying to escape. "Maya, Topaz didn't make it out."
It was only the glow in her eyes that indicated anything had changed from one moment to the next.
“How?”
"Avalon sealed up. Fuck, I'm not the person to explain magic shit but I'm the person available, sorry. Amanda, Wanda, nothing. And then Kyle tried, and I think Doug broke his hand trying and we had to get Namor to pull America away and just." Darcy's signing, where she had the words, was sharp and jerky, the most emotion she'd shown since giving orders earlier. "Nothing. There's nothing, the wall and the door sealed and it's just flat and dead and I--" her mouth shut with a snap, face flushed as she realized how shrill her tone had gotten. "Sorry, sorry, it's. I'm sorry I don't know more. And that I'm not being more professional about telling you. But I know you two are friendly, and you deserved to know before I do the mansion-wide announcement." Darcy stood, reaching out in an aborted motion before letting her hand drop to her side. "Just.. be kind to the others, okay? If you need to yell, aim it at me."
Maya was silent for so long it was almost as if she’d frozen to the spot but when she finally moved it was quickly.
Arms wrapped tightly around Darcy’s waist as Maya gave her a hug that said all the things she’d never be able to put into words.
I understand. It’s not your fault. She was your friend too.
Darcy hugged the younger woman back just as tightly. "I am sure once people have gotten over the shock we will work to find out what happened. To bring her home, if that's possible." She let herself have just a moment before stepping back, shoulders painfully straight. "I still need to let the rest of the mansion know. Kyle and Matt were there too, maybe they will be willing to talk.. or hold a bag for you to punch."
