Trigger Warning: Medical Procedure, Adult/Teenager relationship, Adult content.
Laurie makes her way to Essex's Lab and begins the procedure to cure Adam and fix her.
Laurie had left Darcy unconscious on the floor of her lab, something that couldn’t be helped given the situation. She didn’t know how long she had, hopefully, hours given the fact Darcy’s nose and ears had been bleeding. The feedback loop had given her a pounding headache and a body that was still shivering from moment to moment. She'd managed to clean the blood off her own face on the round-about way she'd arrived by her hands were shaking and she couldn't say yet just what damage had been done.
Hopefully what Dr. Essex had planned would be enough to heal it all.
"I'm here," she called out as she entered the lab section of the warehouse, looking around for its typical occupants. "And I have the whole day even."
It wasn’t entirely a lie, she didn’t actually know how long she had so a whole day was possible. Darcy probably wouldn’t wake up until at least tomorrow.
"Oh good. Let's take the train down to Brighton for a beach holiday." Essex said dryly, not looking up from his screen. "I need a few minutes. Nate, can you take Dr. Collins and help her get ready?"
Nate came over, just a bit too quickly. "Dad is in the zone. It makes him tetchy. Come on." He grinned at her.
Laurie might have answered in kind, her pride slightly pricked at the tone Essex had used but she allowed Nate to draw her away with only a brief glance back at the older Scientist.
“When he says ‘get ready’ I’m assuming we’re not talking about just clothing appropriate to a medical procedure?” Laurie asked with a smile. Nate always had such a calming presence that she couldn’t help but relax. “Has he explained everything?”
"You're going to get fixed. He promised." Nate said, giddy. "I mean, you just need to get to your underwear." Nate pressed close to her. "He doesn't know so if you want..."
Laurie hummed a soft sound and allowed him to pull her in, turning to give him a kiss.
“Is there time for that? I wouldn’t want to rush.”
"There isn't a lot of time but..." His hands found her covered breast.
“We best be quick then,” Laurie replied, pulling him back into one of the rooms with a teasing chuckle, already working at the buttons on his jeans. “We wouldn’t want anyone to come looking.”
Laurie might have noted that she was almost positive Dr. Nathanial Essex missed exactly nothing in his sphere of influence, and especially nothing that had to do with his son. She enjoyed the slightly clandestine nature of their relationship, however, and especially the enthusiasm to which Nate had taken every aspect of pleasing her. She wouldn’t risk any of that by pointing out logical conclusions.
They didn't have much time, but Nate was young and excited enough that it didn't take long. He'd improved immensely since their physical relationship had started, but with the urgency, she didn't try to make him slow down this time.
Less than ten minutes later, Laurie was adjusting her underwear and Nate was starting to place sensors on her body. The wires all led to a gathering at her hip, temporarily clipped to her underwear. As he finished, Nate put his hands on her shoulder. "You ready for this? I'm going to be right here when the procedure is done."
“Of course,” Laurie leaned forward to rest her forehead against his chest, breathing him in. The sex has helped, although it couldn’t entirely quiet the pain in her head or the shivering that still caused intermittent quakes to run through her body. She hoped it only looked like nerves. “It’ll be fine, and when I wake up, we’ll both be better.”
"You're already the best." It was valiant and romantic and immature, but he believed it as he kissed her.
“No,” Laurie whispered sadly against his lips after he let her up for air. “I’m so far from that, but you’re going to be a hero, Nate. You’re going to save us all, and I get to save you. That’s enough, I think.”
"Stop. You're going to get your full powers back and you and I will... I mean... we'll-" Nate's earnestness was obvious. "You and I are going to save the world."
“We will. Together.” Laurie allowed herself to hope for the first time in a long time, maybe if Nate believed in her. Then maybe she really could be the hero. Maybe it wasn't too late just yet. “I love you, you know?”
She hadn’t dared say it, not to him, not when there was so much at stake. But if she died on the table, she wanted him to know that she cared and that it wasn’t all about only her powers.
"I love you too." His mouth crushed against hers. "I don't care what Dad thinks or the X-Men. You and me... we are going to do what is right."
They had no more time, they needed to get this procedure done before anyone could interfere. She didn’t trust the others not to find some way to track her down. She allowed herself to press into him for a few moments more, soaking up his strength and his belief before pushing him away gently.
“We need to go. Your Dad will be waiting.”
"He always is." Nate joked and took her arm to lead her out. His path led through the room to a chamber that made her momentarily flashback to the mutate chambers from Genosha. But Nate held her arm and steered her towards it. Essex was sitting at a holographic control station, making adjustments with small flicks of his fingers.
"Ah, Dr. Collins. Nate, be a good lad and plug in her sensors. Now, this procedure is both utterly straightforward and a completely untried innovation. Inside the chamber, you will be covered in a bio-reactive gel impregnated with a nanite cluster slaved to this control station. Within the gel suspension, they will disintegrate the damaged nerve tissue throughout the affected areas of your body and then essentially print new tissue based on your genetic code from the gel and entwine it with the healthy remaining tissue. The overall regenerative suspension should integrate the new nerves into the existing healthy ones, although it may take time for the integration to fully imprint. Unfortunately, this process is likely to be quite painful, so I would prefer to anesthetize you for the duration of the process if you consent."
“I think if I were to complain at this late hour about a little nap, I might well be considered completely irrational,” Laurie replied dryly, allowing herself to be moved into place by Nate and the sensors that had been attached to the various places on her body plugged into machines that immediately took up a steady hum of data. “Do what you must, Nathanial. I will quite hopefully see you on the other side.”
She didn’t need to mention that no operation, whether complex or simple was ever 100% without risk. She was quite happy to place her life and well-being into Nathanial Essex’s hands however, she had seen his work ethic and abilities in the past months and she had to say that she trusted him.
"Good." He pressed a button as she started to step into the chamber and lay down in the gel. "It will be delivered through the gel, so you just need to relax. I want you to count backward from 100. Adam will keep you company telepathically." As soon as she lay back in the cool viscous liquid, the door closed and Nate's telepathic presence filled her mind.
~Are you alright, Laurie?~
~Yes~
Laurie’s ‘voice’ was faint given that as a non-telepath, her ability to communicate telepathically was more a thought yelled into the void rather than pushed deliberately. It was clear enough, however, and she could feel Nate there, a comforting caress as she felt the gel start to cover her limbs and slip up over her head. She floated now in the medium, her breath and heartbeat loud in her ears as she began to count.
“One Hundred, Ninty Nine, Ninty Eight, Ninty Seven”
~ I'll be right here for you when you get out. Just sleep, ok? ~
