(Backdated) Marie-Ange and Darcy scope out the restaurant on the ground floor of the new X-Force offices while waiting for furniture to arrive, and find out that they're donations only.
Darcy was panting slightly as she came to a stop beside Marie-Ange outside the new building. "Sorry I'm running a little behind. I went autopilot to the office and then missed the stop once I switched trains. Decided it'd just be faster to walk very quickly. Did I beat the furniture people? And what's that awesome smell?"
Marie-Ange looked up from her phone, tapping out the last of a text. "They are on the way, I think you beat them by perhaps two blocks." She waited a beat, and then Darcy's phone buzzed. "I was just asking if you wanted breakfast, because..." She waved her hand towards the building. "You had another minute before I was going to go in and eat too many pastry, but I was going to be polite and get you some."
"I would love breakfast. And I've actually got cash on me, in case they're one of those places." Darcy crossed to the door of the small restaurant and pulled it open, waving Marie-Ange forward. "If they have a lunch that smells as good as whatever is baking this morning does, I might not go food truck adventuring for a while."
"If they have lunch and breakfast and it is as good as it smells, we are all going to be cash poor and need to extra gym hours." Marie-Ange edged past Darcy, took two steps inside and then let out a sigh of absolute bliss. "Cinnamon rolls? Do we get cinnamon rolls for everyone? I think we should."
"Absolutely," Darcy agreed, closing the door with a slow inhale as they moved in. "If they do advance orders we can do those for Saturday? Coffee, cinnamon rolls.. fruit and another pastry that's a little less sweet, perhaps? Or just direct everyone through the line after we unload but before we unpack?" Her voice trailed off as her mind raced ahead. "I have bagels ordered for Monday, but that's because I knew we were near enough to Katz's for them to still taste good. Not sure how I forgot Saturday, maybe I was going to make something? I can't remember." She rubbed her temples in frustration. "These headaches are a nightmare for my organization."
"What is the phrase? I feel you?" Marie-Ange said with a nod. "Have they done the MRI yet, or is that after the holidays?" She knew the mansion's MRI table a little too well for her tastes. "I would offer off-script pain pills but first, I am almost entirely out, and second every time I do, Jean lectures me for a month." Honestly, the second was less of a problem but just tiresome. "I think breakfast sandwich perhaps too, because we have people who need protein."
"After, along with my appointment with one of Dr. Grim's in the know associates. Booked out for the holidays.. or to take a holiday, I suppose. It'd be nice if I could figure out the trigger for them." Darcy took in the walls as they moved through the line, smiling at the various kitsch decorating them before turning to the counter. "Wait, I don't see prices. Or a menu, even."
"New around these parts, honey? Betty's is donations only," replied the older man behind the counter. "Pay what you can, leave a note, draw us a picture, volunteer to do some cleaning, whatever you can do. We feed everybody regardless. Now what can I get you? Special this morning is a brisket hash, meat is turkey bacon or patty sausage, and pastries are cinnamon rolls or banana nut muffins. Our daily offerings are oatmeal, eggs, fresh fruit, and home fries."
"Yeah, our office is being moved into the upstairs, so you'll see us around a lot," Darcy replied with an easy smile. "The hash sounds great. Can I get that and a muffin, please?" She waited for her plate to be made and took it with a polite thanks, then moved out of the way so Marie-Ange could order.
"Two cinnamon rolls please." Marie-Ange said, a little distractedly. "And tea in a to go if you have it?" She was still examining the decor, lingering over a few framed posters from Broadway shows. "We have a few big appetites in the office. If we wanted to order a box of cinnamon rolls should we call ahead?"
He placed two rolls in a plate and pointed down the counter. "Coffee and tea at the end there. We can do small orders, just give us at least a day's notice. We do charge for that though, there's a small catering menu down there with what we can do and how much we charge. I'm Joe, my partner Lee and I own the place. We're open from 6 AM to 2 PM on weekdays and Saturday. Welcome to the neighborhood, ladies."
Darcy beamed at him from her place down the counter. "I'm Darcy, it's nice to meet you." She busied herself making a cup of coffee and grabbed one of the catering menus he'd indicated before taking a seat at one of the small tables near the wall.
Marie-Ange pulled a business card out and dropped it into the fishbowl under the "Join our mailing list!" sign. "The card says Marie-Ange, but I usually answer to Angie. It's good to be in the area." She followed just a few steps behind Darcy. "Card bowl has a card from a local boutique, and a mutant friendly daycare." She said quietly, as she sat. "How is the catering menu? Enough variety to put in the regular meeting pastry rotation?"
"Oh nice, love that. Did you catch the guy in the kitchen? If those horns are replicas then they're high-quality ones." Darcy replied equally quiet before opening up the catering menu. "Yeah, there's a good mix of sweet and savory for heathens like Kevin that profess to not have a sweet tooth. Danishes, muffins, scones, a few breads. And soup. Could definitely get through meetings with it. Or just send people downstairs with a twenty for a to-go plate."
"Or both." The chair squeaked a little along the floor as Marie-Ange scooted closer to Darcy to read the menu as well. "Oh, they have chili on the soup list. That is going to be very popular upstairs." Her tea had steeped, so she pulled the bag and wrapped it in a napkin. "I missed the horns, good job."
"With those cheddar and jalapeno scones, maybe? And cookies for after." Darcy hummed thoughtfully as she took a bite of her hash. "Mm, yeah, I'm gonna have to get off a stop or two early every day and walk so I can eat breakfast here. This is equal or better to any other diner hash I've had. Or more gym time. Worth it." She pushed the plate towards Marie-Ange in offer. "Want a bite?"
Marie-Ange very much did and took a forkful semi-silently. She made more than one 'yum' noise before finally clearing her mouth with a long drink of tea. "Merci. Well that is going to be a regular favourite, just based on how many late nights we work and how often one of us is a little hungover."
"Sending everyone here in small groups to get breakfast or lunch, don't stop me." Darcy worked through the plate steadily, pausing occasionally for a sip of coffee. "How's the cinnamon roll?"
The answer came back in the form of a thumbs up, as Marie-Ange took a second bite of cinnamon roll. It was a little too big to eat neatly - the first bite had gotten icing on Marie-Ange's fingers, the second made a little smear of it on her mouth. She chewed and swallowed, and took a drink of tea before wiping the icing off. "We're going to keep them in business just from these. I will join Doug's stupid marital arts class if I have to."
"Worth it. I had a plan to find the food trucks in the area and now all of my plans revolve around keeping cash on me to eat down here instead." Darcy was still slowly working through her plate. "I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach, which means muffin is now a snack for later."
"So worth it. I am not going to be anywhere near finishing the second roll." Marie-Ange looked at her plate, shook her head and pushed it towards Darcy. "Bets on who manages to eat two in a row first. Jubilee or Artie?"
"Sucker bet, they'll both do it and at least one of them will help someone finish a savory bread or sandwich after." Darcy pinched off a small piece of the roll and popped it into her mouth. "Damn, that is good. I need to take one to Matt sometime, I owe him cinnamon rolls." She looked at the few bites left on her plate. "Okay. I'm tapping out. Time to go stuff cash into their donations and direct some furniture into place?"
Marie-Ange was already into her bag, digging for one of the little stashes of paper money she kept around. "I am going to get a box of those cinnamon rolls and oh goodness did you see the puppy?" Whatever she was going to say was lost in the uncharacteristic delight and Marie-Ange's excited pointing out a hand-made poster. "Amanda will kill me if I bring home a dog. None of us have time for pets."
"You might have enough time for a dog if you can get a group of us to agree to take on the care and feeding. We've got the space for one, at least, and you can probably pay someone else to do food and walking if we're all gone for an extended time." Darcy grinned widely at Angie's delight as she wrapped her muffin in a napkin and stuck it in her bag. "Delicious food where the profits go to feed people and help animals in need? Kevin's going to have the most expensive black coffee of his life next time I do a food and drink run."
She took some of the cash the other woman handed over as their phones chimed. "Bet that's the furniture. You head up, I'll get a box for your cinnamon roll and take care of things down here, then meet you upstairs to help direct things to the right rooms."
Darcy was panting slightly as she came to a stop beside Marie-Ange outside the new building. "Sorry I'm running a little behind.
