Maya & Darcy | Catching Up
Jan. 16th, 2022 02:00 pmMaya visits Darcy and gets context for the note she was left at Christmas.

Darcy poked her head out of her blankets at the knock on her door, shoving them to the foot of the couch and standing slowly as she shuffled to the door and opened it. She gave Maya a tired smile, stepping back and gesturing her in. "Sorry if I forget signs for things, I'm still having some memory issues."
Maya shook her head and gave her the sign for ‘dumbass’ before she stepped forward to enfold the older woman in a hug. It had been odd when she first hit her growth spurt as a teenager to know she was taller than people she considered larger than life but now it just meant she could give better hugs.
Darcy wrapped her arms around Maya with a sigh and a light squeeze. "C'mon, to the couch. I'm still supposed to be taking it a little easy." She moved back to the couch, settling the blanket over her lap and looking up at Maya. 'Sit,' she signed. 'Okay-I dumbass-fair. Question?' She raised one eyebrow expectantly. "I'm probably not going to try to sign anything complex when I answer.”
“It’s fine, I got the implants back so I can hear you.” Maya finally spoke, signing along with her speech. Code switching between languages had never been hard for her, and the added ability her power gave her just made that easier. “Dumbass was for only leaving me a note and making me worry. Why did you think I’d want to punch you?”
'Trying polite,' Darcy signed back. 'Sorry worry. Not thinking.' She took a deep breath before answering Maya's question. "How much do you know about what happened the week of Christmas? It's easier to just fill in the blanks."
Maya finally sat, making sure she was turned toward Darcy so she could see her lips as well as hear her. The implants did well enough but she used multiple options to get full meaning.
“Not much. You left. Laurie left. You wrote me a shitty note but Kevin said you were safe so I’ll let you live unpunched.”
"I am sorry about that. I wasn't, well. I was mostly running on panic brain, not actual brain? He got me somewhere safe, but I wrote those before I went to him. La-she. She'd been making me forget things? And using her powers on me, which." Darcy rubbed the back of her neck in frustration, trying not to look down or mumble. "I'd given her permission for some of it. I was really stressed, and I couldn't get in to a psych until after Christmas, so she was taking the edge off. Helping me sleep. Pushing a little serotonin to cut through my anxiety. She's a doctor, and she was my girlfriend, so I thought I could trust her. That it would be a safe gap closer until I could see another professional. Instead, I guess it was easier to just have me not asking questions at all. Forgetting. False memories that wouldn't match up to my phone or schedule, but also pushing me to not think too hard about it." Darcy trailed off. "She got too ahead of herself though, forgot that she'd need to keep pushing more, doing it more often. That's why the headaches got so debilitating in December. Withdrawal, and my brain trying to piece things together.”
“Why isn’t she dead?”
Maya’s sign was clipped and angry, her words out loud as clipped as they could be. She might not do it, having made the choice to be a hero type but that didn’t mean the people at X-Force wouldn’t and frankly, she cry no tears over another monster gone from the world.
"Because I fled instead of doing it myself and she was gone before Kevin knew it needed done. It's unfortunate, but.." Darcy trailed off. "I'm not sure I'd have been welcome back if I'd actually given in to my urge to smother her on my way out. So now she's in the wind." She shrugged at Maya, not willing to dweall on it just yet. "We will find her, eventually. Or she'll get cocky and announce herself.”
“Probably better that way,” Maya signed, before repeating the words out loud. “Less assholes being judgmental.”
Maya relaxed back against the seat, giving Darcy a look over as if searching for something.
“You’re still going to spar with me when you’re better but I won’t hit you for being a dumbass. Long as you promise to remember that I’ll never fucking care about what you do as long as you’re safe and happy.”
"I need the challenge." Darcy gave Maya a wide smile. "And the reminder, sometimes, when I'm being a dumbass." She did the sign carefully, inverting her hand at the end to finger spell her name and laughing. "Need to be careful with that one, or it's going to end up as my name when we sign. I'm glad I have you as a friend, and I'll try to remember that."
“I’ll remind you if you don’t.” Maya signed back with a huffing laugh. She stood, happy that Darcy was back, if not 100%. She wasn’t foolish enough to think her friend was completely healed but as long as she was here rather than off somewhere they couldn’t see her, that could be helped. “I’ll let you rest, but you know I’m down the hall if you have bad dreams. Your couch is probably as comfy as Topaz’s.”
"Life is too short to have uncomfortable furniture," Darcy quipped, standing and pulling Maya into an impulsive hug. "I'm glad you dropped by. And I'll try to reach out if I'm having a hard time of it.”
Maya momentarily rested her chin on Darcy’s head, returning the hug with a firm squeeze before stepping away.
“Me, or one of the others. Whoever doesn’t matter, just as long as you’re not facing it alone, okay?”
"Promise." Darcy signed it too, hands firm. "And if I need to leave again, I'll try to leave a less shitty note."
