Jean and Sooraya: catching up
Jun. 6th, 2022 02:16 pmJean and Sooraya catch up a little in the medlab.
"Hey, you up for some hot chocolate?" Sooraya poked her head around Jean's medlab office, two steaming mugs in hand. "I'm afraid I'm gonna have to toss the other one if you don't..." She added with a wink.
Jean closed the file she had been reading. "We certainly wouldn't want that," she said, smiling. "I'd be happy to take one off your hands."
Sooraya stepped inside and handed over the mug. "Hope you're having a quiet day so far?" She asked as she took a seat and sipped from her own chocolate. "Though... maybe I shouldn't have asked that..."
"And now something will catch on fire just because," Jean mused with a smirk, " Things have been okay. Just updating charts. What's up?"
"Remember that manual I'm working on..." Sooraya shook her head with a wry grin. "Or rather that I was supposed to be done with, but I keep finding new stuff for that I want to edit in? I met a young psi in the Underground. His grandmother invented some really interesting exercises for him, but I wanted to get a little feedback on them before I included them.... so I was wondering if you have some time to take a look this week?"
"At the exercises, the boy, or both?" Jean said. She had the database she had created herself to help with treating mutants. But now that she no longer worked at the Claremont Medical Center the number of mutants that she ran into outside of those with the underground was restricted to either those at the mansion or hellbent on destroying the world.
"The boy luckily is fine, but it's the exercises themselves...They are kinda different and I'm no full psi. Before I seriously include them..." Sooraya shrugged, a small grin playing around her lips. "Looks like I'm looking for a second opinion."
Jean smiled. "Sure, I can give it a go. We could also set up a Zoom meeting with Charles too. He helped me a lot with some practices when I was a teenager."
"I thought of that, but I always kinda feel like I am bothering him if I reach out with questions like that." Sooraya admitted as she dug out the papers and handed them over. "What the grandmother came up with... it's totally built around mirroring his mind to the mind he's working with... if that makes some kind of sense." She paused for a moment. "Oh, and I've been wanting to mention... I talked with Angelo and Terry a little while back about Garrison's report."
Glancing up, Jean was silent a moment before nodding. "The movement in the Underground?" she said. "What'd they think?"
"Get the people who are involved in the Underground together to compare notes... probably also everyone from XFI." Sooraya let out a sigh. "I do think we're gonna have to be really careful in seeing who finds Mags' ideas interesting and are drawn to them and those who've already made steps on the path Garrison was warning of."
Jean made a face, taking a sip from her hot chocolate. "And the ones in between who are pretending they're still loyal to get information to Magneto," she said grimly. "It's definitely a real thing to worry about. Probably not a bad idea to get some training from the Spies on how to interrogate someone without them knowing you're interrogating them."
"There is a reason I never went in their direction. But yeah, it couldn't hurt to check with them." Sooraya took a sip from her own chocolate. "I take it you're in for that meeting? I'll probably loop in Alani as well. She has some connections of her own."
Jean nodded. "Yeah, I'm in. And good idea with Alani. We need all the help we can get. But keep it minimal. If things get bad I don't want her to get pulled into something she can't get out of. Not until she's more trained," she said.
"Neither of us would put her on the front lines, but don't underestimate her." Sooraya gently countered. "She's been active in the Underground and District X for a few years now. She can hold her own. But we can warn her, just to be sure." Sooraya smiled, sipping from once more from her chocolate. "But if it's okay... back to my original question... what do you think of those exercises? Are they anything feasible?"
"Good. And I get it. It's not about underestimation. It's about the people and things we fight. The megalomaniacs and demons and robots and gods. They're a lot different and more dangerous than the people from the Underground and District X....or at least, they used to be," Jean said thoughtfully. She glanced away.
"Now they're all blurring together. I just want them all to be safe, more prepared."
She looked back to Sooraya. "Which exercises?"
"Sorry, I'm jumping topics here. I meant the ones I brought you." Sooraya nodded at the papers she'd handed Jean.
"Oh!" Jean said with a laugh. "Right," she said, then nodded.
Scanning through the papers, Jean continued nodding. "Yeah, these are pretty well done for someone who isn't a psi. At least the ones I'm looking at. I'll look at them more closely, talk with Charles, and get back with you. It'll be good for him to have a network."
"I wonder how she came up with them, but learning by observing what someone's mind does and then trying to mirror it. It makes sense, but depending or what you are doing it also sounds risky." Sooraya shook her head. "But then, I am not a psi."

"It can be. Especially with an untrained telepath. But she's trying. Love and support can do a lot. We can do what we can to try to help and supplement some of those teachings," Jean said. She closed the file.
"And if you ever need help with other cases let me know. I've got some more free time on my hands."
