Sarah comes to talk to Kevin about a situation involving her family.
The new Snow Valley offices had finally shaken down to something approaching normalcy. The last of the boxes of files had been unpacked and installed, offices had been switched and furniture adjusted for day to day preferences, and even in the cubicles, the little individual signs like photos and personal coffee mugs were visible. It looked like they'd been there for years/
Those habits made some tasks easier, which is why Sarah knew that this early in the morning, Kevin was almost certainly at the office, sitting with his feet up and a coffee going through the five or six papers he picked up on the way into work.
Sarah buzzed herself into the building and the force in her steps up the stairwell made it clear to anyone in the office that she was on a mission and didn't care who knew about it. Generally Family business was hers alone, but today it seemed it was everyone's problem. She hesitated in the doorway to Kevin's office. "I'm sorry to bother you," she sounded frustrated with maybe just a slight bit of worry, "but I'm about to do something very stupid and I am hoping you can help me."
"This is the place for that kind of thing. Now what particular brand of stupid do you have planned for today." Kevin said, arching and eyebrow but otherwise showing no surprise at her appearance. Sarah had stayed longer than he expected at the mansion since the underworld was in a state of flux currently.
Sarah sighed. "My stupid half-brother has gone and gotten himself arrested. I don't know if it was a planned ambush or just bad luck, but what I do know is that they are holding him on possession with the intent to distribute charges and anyone who knows Sebastian knows that's bullshit. He would never deign to get his perfectly manicured hands dirty like that." She slipped inside and closed the door behind her. "He may be an idiot, but he's my brother and I'll be fucked if I'm letting him go down on this because someone's holding a grudge."
"That's... not great. New mayor is pushing the DA's office to go hard on anything drug related for God knows why." He pulled his feet off the desk and sat up, putting the paper to one side. "First things first. Has he said anything or just lawyered up?"
The look Sarah gave him looked almost incredulous that he had asked that question. In their Family, baby's first word was always "lawyer". "Just the lawyers. And while we have a whole mess of them on retainer, I don't like that they're so blatantly trying to pin something this out of character on him. It sounds like someone has fixed this."
"Sounds like it. After all, with his background, it's not like it is going to seem out of character." Kevin pulled out a pen and started to jot down some notes. "OK, so if the whole thing is bullshit, we need to put together some intelligence. Find out the origin of the charges and who is involved, shake down sources and see if your brother or the Rushmans in general have a target on their backs. You got any ideas who would want this?"
"Well, I have one relative who has already tried to take our family out this year, so my money is on Margaret back for round two." Sarah considered for a moment, trying to connect the dots. "Sebastian was just the one to come out of hiding first. Like I said, he's fucking stupid."
"Your aunt, huh? I'm going to get the team moving, do some poking around. You shake down your people and see if they have any info. And don't go and see your brother. Last thing we need is to give them another target."
Sarah shrugged and turned to leave. "He may be my half-brother, but I don't like him enough to visit him in jail."
"Just enough to risk yourself trying to clear his name? I get it. Family is complicated." Kevin said with a thin smile.
Hand on the door, she paused. "I told you I was going to do something stupid, didn't I? Well here it is." She slipped out the door and left no less determined, but with slightly less stomping.
