Operation: Kefauver - Log 8
Aug. 26th, 2022 11:18 amX-Force goes through the data they stole, coming up with some interesting items.
40 years of mob secrets made quite the file to digest. While not the most astute archivists, the shared family meetings alone were an intelligence goldmine, when not revealing the skeletons directly, they at least hinted where they might be. More importantly were the private communications on their 'secure' shadow network, which the families had smartly farmed out to a highly reputable vendor so they weren't tempted to try and spy on each other. It had lasted twenty seconds against Doug's automated cracking software once past the first level of security.
While tempted to go through everything, they'd focused on the here and now. Why was a war coming and who was orchestrating it?
"Emma has a prior engagement, but she's dropped her initial notes and impressions on to the database for review. So, what do we know for certain? Margaret Rushman got enough leverage with the Karnelli's to go after her estranged family. That little bid for revenge is setting the Karnelli's up against the Hammerhead family at a minimum."
"That not one of us can be trusted and we probably all deserve what we have coming to us?" Sarah was struggling to process that the other Families, who had always been difficult to work with but never strayed from the rules, were now trying to make the entire system collapse. She sighed. "I'm sorry, you meant facts, not feelings. We know that this is bigger than just my Aunt. The surveillance goes back months, if not years. Margaret had her own power after she was pushed out, but not enough to support the kind of sophisticated data in this file."
"That all hell is about to break loose?" Topaz was on a tablet, flipping through files. "That there's about five layers of secrets to everything? I think can't trust anyone is a fact as much as it's a feeling."
"What is she getting out of it?" Marie-Ange asked. "She has to know that if she sets this up that there will be a target on her back, and that she cannot trust anyone. So what is her plan?" She picked at her manicure. "Revenge is nice, but not if you get shot by an angry cousin."
Felicia shrugged, shifting to straighten in her seat and in turn remove the toe of her pump from where it'd been casually knocking against Sarah's ankle, an annoyance. A distraction. Debateable for who. "It's power. It's always power. She thinks she is a main character and that Masque isn't going to immediately use her for her own ends and turn on her whenever it's convenient. It's simple and stupid, but there we go."
"At the end of the day, it always comes back to something simple and stupid," Doug observed. "People can try to justify themselves as much as they want, but it always comes down to one of a handful of base motives. The desire to possess someone or something, or to keep someone else from having it, hides behind a lot of this type of thing."
"Psychology aside, a gang war is the last thing the city needs, especially if the other organized crime groups get it in their heads that territory is available." Kevin said. "I've been through this kind of thing before. If it happens, a disproportionate amount of violence will end up in District-X and our doorstep. Keep digging into this and find me some options to stop it if we have to."
