Garrison Kane, the world's worst patient, goes to find Jean and ask for a favour.

Garrison Kane was not a man to be found willingly in the med lab. His powers usually let him avoid it altogether and when they didn't, it usually meant something exceptionally awful had happened to him. However, he looked fully healthy as he came in, obviously just back from work, in the suit he often referred to as part of the FBI Collection. He bypassed the rest of the lab and knocked on the side of the cubicle that housed the computer and medical records for the school; the closest thing to an admin area as they had directly in the lab.

"Doc, I need to ask a favour."

Jean arched an eyebrow, taking off her reading glasses as she turned from the laptop where she was inputting charts. She paused a split second, distracted by his outfit, then glanced back up.

"What kind of favor?"

"I need a physical." This drew another look and he hooked a stool to sit on. "OK, so my little run in with Laurie? There's something I didn't mention in the report. Laurie tried to use her powers on me and they didn't work. At all. Which... I don't have an explanation for. Even with my Omni-skin, I was always vulnerable. So... I'm worried maybe something changed with my powers from the whole Olivier thing."

Jean gave herself some small credit for not tensing up at the name. Rising from her chair, she grabbed her iPad and searched for his name in the medical database. The ones who got hurt often, she had their patient number memorized and was able to pull up their chart with ease but not his.

"At first glance it seems unlikely that what happened to you would impact your ability to withstand pheromones, but I've learned never to rule anything out," she said.

"We can start by getting the basics like blood samples and your vitals. See if we can rule out things from a purely scientific standpoint."

"Whatever you need. I just..." Kane paused, dry washing his hands. "I've been through this before and... I don't know. I'd like to know, eh? Before it bites me in the ass."

"No, I get it," Jean said. "Power changes are definitely something to keep an eye on. Other than that have you noticed anything else out of the ordinary?"

"I went to hell and a demon burned my weird skin made by another mutant off me."

Jean rolled her eyes and shot him a look. "Do you want me to help you figure out what's going on or not? Less attitude, more details. You came to me, remember?"

"Hey, I'm the one with the issue, You know the issues for now."

"So that's the only thing that's different?" Jean said. She fell silent for a moment. "Have Pixie's powers ever worked on you?"

"I don't know. We never tried it." Kane said, shrugging.

"Might be something to consider as a test," Jean said, making a note in his chart. Laurie (thankfully) wasn't around to do another test so they'd have to go with similar conditions.

"Are you ready for the physical now or do you want to come back later?"

"Jean. I'm worried. I've had so many different things happen to me... I got Asgard beat into me. I got treated like the infernal was secondary. I'm tired of things happening to me."

Jean fell silent for a moment, putting down her iPad. "I know," she said softly.

"I'll do what I can to try to help with this part. But if you need to take some time to breathe, that's okay too. I'll be here."

"Laurie has always been able to hit me but this time, fresh scent of pine. Something changed. I need to know." Kane shook his head.

"I'll try my best," Jean said with unwavering honesty. "But I need you to realize there's only so much that modern science can do. I'm one of the few pioneers in mutant medicine, but I haven't seen everything. That's a chance I might need to ask some of my colleagues. Is that okay?"

"Of course. I don't- Jean, I need your help. I'm not questioning your ability to do that."

Jean nodded. "I understand," she said, searching his eyes. "I just don't want you to be disappointed."

"I know if I am, it isn't going to be your fault." He said simply.

"You'd be one of the few patients I've had with that sentiment when they find out I'm not a miracle worker," Jean said, giving him a quick smile.

"But I'll still do my best to try to get you some answers."

"So what do you need? I don't do the medlab a lot. Powers and all."

Jean let out a thoughtful breath. "I'm thinking a wide array of tests. Blood, urine, brain scan, MRI, baseline vitals...Hard to find that needle in a haystack if we don't know what the needle looks like. Yet."

"So what you're saying is lots of needles. I already regret my request." Kane said, but unlike every other time, quietly sat on the table. "What do you need from me?"

"When they called me sharp in medical school, they weren't just talking about my mind," Jean mused, then glanced over. She was silent for a moment. "I think...what I really need is patience. This isn't going to be resolved overnight."

"You're the Doc, Doc. Tell me what I need to do. I know I've been a pain in the ass before, but I'll show up when and where you need me to."

"And you won't fight me on it?" Jean said skeptically. People with healing factors (and doctors) were always the worst patients.

"No. I don't know what is happening and to be honest, Doc, I never fought you with anything I didn't know." Kane said, surrendering.

Jean sat down on one of the stools beside him. "Touche. I'm used to everyone else doing it. Especially if they're frustrated."

"They might be idiots."

The simple, matter-of-fact statement caught Jean off guard and she laughed. "Fear can make a lot of people thoughtless."

She glanced over. "Worst case scenario, what are you thinking this is?"

"I don't know what it is but something has changed. And I trust you more than anyone else to tell me if something has changed."

"You don't need me to tell you that," Jean said. "That was obvious the moment you said Laurie's powers didn't effect you. I think what you're looking for is how, or why."

"I am." Kane said finally. "It's just- I just... I'm scared of Laurie and what she can do now."

Jean was quiet for a moment, memories of working with Darcy after her time with Laurie flashing through her mind.

"Me too," she said softly.

"That's why I need to know what's happening to me. Because there's no way I'm letting her run around out there a second longer than necessary. I am going to take her down."

"Hopefully not alone," Jean said, glancing over.

"I know but I'm a bit selfish too. I want the first pound of flesh she owes." Kane said and took a deep breath as Jean started to stack her supplies. "I don't need to change into one of those paper gowns, do I?" .

"Afraid so," Jean said. "And if it helps, they aren't paper. They're made of fabric." To illustrate, she put one on the table beside him.

"Got it. Good patient. I will be a good patient." He said, half to himself as he took the gown over to the curtain, pulled it shut, and started to peel out of his clothes. "How's the jaw doing? Bruises look a lot better today."

"You mean does it hurt less when I eat or close my mouth? A little," Jean said. "I'm just glad I didn't need to go to a dentist."

"Yeah. We got pretty lucky there." Kane said, tossing his clothes on to the table and pulling on the gown before walking back out. "We'll be ready for them next time. Collins took her shot and missed. Now, where do you need me?"

"Exam room 1," Jean said. She grabbed a kit for drawing blood and other samples. "And you sound optimistic."

"We know what we're dealing with now. We can train for it. They won't be unknowns next time." He said, following the direction of her finger to the exam room. "If we don't, that's on us now."

"That woman messed with my inner ear," Jean said, notably disquieted. "I might be able to try to block it somehow telekinetically but....the others? Just...wince and bear it?"

"No. We start building countermeasures. We start to figure out how to beat her. And the rest of them." Kane got into the room and took a seat on the steel table. "It's how we beat Magneto. It's how we beat every other threat we face."

Jean didn't say anything as she came into the room pushing a cart with the tools she needed on it. She didn't really know what to say, other than she was tired of losing.

"I'll check your vitals first."

"Go ahead. Um, how?"

Jean arched her eyebrow, then held up her stethoscope. "Stethoscope...blood pressure...weight on a scale..." she said.

"Is that okay?"

"You're the boss, Doc." He said, putting himself in her hands fully.
