Jubilee had stopped counting the number of days David North had spent in a coma after the first several weeks beyond a vague plan to definitely wrap him in bubble wrap once he woke up.

Instead she’d simply relocated her ‘office’ to his room and informed Marie-Ange that she’d be working remotely until he woke up.

It wasn’t that she didn’t know he would wake up, she was ever if nothing else the soul of belief in a Just universe. Still, she needed to make sure that everything that needed doing to support that was done and she’d always heard talking to people in comas helped and if there was one thing she did well, it was talk.

“I still think National Treasure is the Nicholas Cage movie when it comes to comfort movies, even more than ‘Con Air’, which was a tour de force but just didn’t have the whimsical ‘stealing shit’ air to it that National Treasure did. Also, heist stuff! Like, who doesn’t love heist stuff?”

Felicia paused in the doorway, a book and the newspaper tucked under her elbow, surveying the scene she'd walked into. "I was going to read another couple chapters of "Why Do I Do That?" and do the crossword outloud, but I see you have the whole torture him until he wakes up to make it stop idea covered."

“Hey!” Jubilee protested with a laugh but she moved the chair she’d been lounging in to give Felicia some room. “I’ll have you know Nicholas Cage is a National Treasure.”

She waggled her eyebrows at her friend and waited for the groan she considered her due reward for such a terrible statement.

“No,” was all Felicia replied, giving her a playful tap on the nose, before falling into the space her friend had made with perhaps slightly less dignity than was usual. "Take lunch, babe. Stretch your legs. I'll bore Sleeping Ugly for a bit."

“Tag, you’re it,” Jubilee noted as she popped to her feet almost immediately. She’d definitely been needing some kind of walkies break, and the chance to eat but having North wake up in a room without anyone there? No, she’d never let that happen. “Call me if anything changes?”

“Can…” Felicia started, slowly trailing off at the minuscule rasp of skin on low thread count sheets. She stared hard, as if she could will it one way or another - she couldn’t, not with this, she’d already tried - until again, this time for certain, North’s finger twitched.

Waking up from a coma, it turned out, felt like an uncanny mix between floating beneath open waters and prolonged sleep paralysis. There were tinny voices in the space between the cool darkness of unconsciousness and the light beyond crusty eyelids that nagged at North to get the hell up. But try as he might, his own body seemed hell bent at defying his desire to sit up.

The German sighed, already exhausted, before it subconsciously occurred to him that he could, quite simply, open his eyes.

“Wait, did you see that?” Jubilee asked as she was sure she saw North’s eyelids flutter.

She moved back into the room, thoughts of grabbing a shower or taking a break forgotten as she watched for that same flutter she was positive she’d seen.

"Y-yeah," Felicia breathed, laced with a nod as she moved her head in Jubilee's direction but couldn't let her eyes off of him. It seemed too much, like she may scare him off, and she stilled, half holding a breath and seconds from considering prayer

“We need…” Jubilee’s mind had blanked as North’s eyelids definitely fluttered that time and then opened wide. “He’s awake.”

It was probably the dumbest most obvious thing she’d ever said but given she was now holding herself upright by sheer willpower alone when her legs wanted to collapse, she felt she could be forgiven.

She stumbled her way over to his bed and placed her hand on one of his, almost as if to remind herself this was real.

“You’re awake,” she said again, tears pricking at her eyes.

The man blinked, lids still heavy and vision hazy against the afternoon sunlight. There was a buzzing sound next to him he could not quite make out. Something -- someone -- touched him, and North's brows furrowed in confusion. Everything refused to come into focus. He tried to think but even his last memory eluded his mind's feeble grasp.

"What?" He asked, though the uttered sound was more of an unintelligible rasp that grated against his throat.

There was a low noise, barely heard above the monitors, that had Felicia glancing to the door to see who had entered sounding so wounded before realizing, faced with an empty hallway, the sound had come from her.

“You’re awake,” she repeated, forced smile pushed onto her face as she looked at them. “I’ll… go get someone.”

Felicia paused. “I’m glad you made it,” she finally said, exiting.

Jubilee looked at the door where Felicia had exited and then wiped the tears from her eyes. There’d be people here soon, Doctor shaped people who could do all the Doctor stuff that people coming out of comas needed.

She patted North’s hand, almost absently as her thoughts skittered from one thing to the next but unable to really focus.

“You’re awake.”
