Liam meets Jess and Jess' bottle of liquor. No one is impressed

"What're you doing?" Liam asked, popping his head out of a tree. The girl had walked passed his tree at least twice that he'd noticed and it wasn't like tons of people were out walking under any trees. "Is that a bottle of Jack?"

"Jesus Christ!" Jess was never going to get used to how many people were here, let alone how many people lived here who were unwilling to announce their fucking presence. She looked at Liam, glanced at the bottle, then looked back, clearly wondering if she had accidentally stolen someone's hallucinogenic booze instead of a plain-ass bottle of bottom-shelf whiskey. "I don't think this is pet-safe," she said flatly.

Flipping her the bird, he reached for the bottle anyways, "Oh yeah, that's original," he retorted. "But shockingly, not a pet. Claws are real though."

Jess, with an agility saved entirely for protecting important items like stolen whiskey, stepped back and out of the way. "Do you always jump-scare innocent women in the fucking woods and try to swipe their booze?" she snapped irritably.

Jumping out of the tree, Liam landed on his feet nimbly, brushing off a stray leaf, "Yeah, sometimes. If the alcohol looks good," he asked easily, "though usually they know I'm around. I'm not trying to steal it. Just a taste."

She squinted at him, clearly wondering if she should ask how old he was, then shrugged and held the bottle out to him. "Don't get any cute ideas," she said warningly. "I'm not here to start a charity bar." That was whoever had left their liquor cabinet unlocked in the lounge.

Taking a long swig, Liam made a face as he handed it back. It was stronger than what he was used to, but not terrible. "Thanks. I'm Liam."

"I'm Jess," she said, nodding, and taking her own swig from the bottle. "You related to the other cat? You both seem to enjoy scaring the fuck out of people."

"Not related," he answered, leaning against the tree. "She's purple. I'm orange," as if that made a difference. "And I wasn't trying to scare you. Just a fun side effect."

Jess's look implied - strongly - that she was not impressed with this excuse. "You should be careful who you jump out at in the woods," she said severely. "There's a guy here who can light people on fire with his mind." Okay, she was pretty sure Haller - or Cyndi - wouldn't do that to a kid being a dick, but it was a good bogeyman story.

Narrowing his eyes, Liam considered. "And they let him wander around just randomly setting people on fire?" That didn't sound right, even for this place. And he hadn't seen any charred areas, "That's gotta be hell on the insurance."

She shrugged. "Just telling you what I heard," she said; take it or leave it. She took another pull from the bottle. "Anyway, make a fucking noise or something, seriously."

"Uh huh," did she think he was born last night or something? He knew what 'just telling you what I heard' meant. He was calling bullshit. "No. You need to pay more attention."

Jessica rolled her eyes and started walking again. "Your choice, but kids who scare the shit out of me lose their drinking privileges," she said over her shoulder.

Following her, Liam shrugged, "It wasn't very good. I thought adults drank better stuff than we have at the football game bonfires," he paused, a thought coming through his head, "Or are you an alcoholic that'll drink paint thinner just for the high?" immediately, he clapped a hand over his mouth. That was a thought that shouldn't have come out his mouth.

There it was. Jess was leaving, thoroughly done with this entire interaction.

"Sorry, sorry!" Liam yelped, trying to apologize, but he knew he'd hurt Jess without meaning to and now he couldn't undo it. Sighing, he slunk back to his tree, maybe it was better if he wasn't around people for a while.
