xp_alias: never met a girl like (not even pretending that's cute)

This is why Jessica should always ask for specifics before agreeing to anything.

"Open more," Sharon complained, sticking a clawed hand through the cracked van window as if she could shove it lower. "I want to put my head out."

Shatterstar turned to Rictor, who was next to him, and utterly ignored Sharon. "This is your first time in New York City, right?"

"Hmm? Oh, sí." Rictor looked up from scrolling through TikTok on his phone to answer the boy (man now, he remembered) cramped next to him in this van too small for seven people. "It's too big for me to comfortably explore on my own."

In the back, Match lowered the window with a sigh to allow Sharon her request. His legs were stretched out into the walkway and his hood had been pulled down low to give the illusion of sleeping while he waited for the van to arrive in DX. "You better stay buckled if you stick your head out, or go out through the other cat's window."

Liam glowered as he played Honkai Star Rail. At least Sharon wasn't climbing all over him, but yeesh, "Sharon, no," he grumbled, trying to pull her back in. God. It was like she'd never been in a car before. He was excited for New York, but not the drive to get there.

Twisting in the front passenger seat, Jessica lowered her sunglasses and surveyed the arrayed young adults with a glare. "Everyone keep your heads inside the damn van," she said. "And you'd better all be wearing seatbelts."

"Does not fit," Sharon replied dismissively. It was, in fact, her second time in a car, and it was difficult to fit a lap belt when dealing with both a tail and knees that folded around the vicinity of our ribs when comfortably seated. She was now stretched over Match's lap to brace her hands against the side of the door and push her nose through the window. Her happily lashing tail nearly caught Liam across the face.

That tail was the agent of Sharon's downfall, because it gave Jessica something to grab so that she could pull Sharon back inside. With her other hand, she not only got the window up, but clicked the child locks into place. "Put your seatbelt on and stay away from the window," she snapped. "Arthur will stop this van."

"I will," Arthur lied helpfully from the driver's seat in his most serious voice, "Jess is correct. Everyone here will follow her rules, or they'll have to answer to me."

Then, a beat.

"Should we get pizza? Pizza is an NYC thing."
