(backdated) It's been a long day full of delayed flights, but getting to meet Sam and enjoy food and drinks at Kirby's with Jubilee is worth it.

Darcy's eyes brightened as she saw two seats together at the bar, the small carry-on at her feet clearing the way as she navigated herself and Jubilee to the open seats. "Thank Thor," she muttered tiredly as she propped her luggage in front of the stool and took a seat. "And thank you too, for waiting around work for me to arrive after my flight got delayed so I didn't have to ride back alone." She nudged Jubilee in the arm, giving the other woman a warm but tired smile. "First round and first snack's on me, mainly because I'm starving and Oh Hello those are new –" her eyes widened as she looked at the menu. "Confit tater tots? Sign me UP. And the teriyaki chicken meatballs."

She didn't recognize the younger man behind the bar as she flagged him down, but it'd been almost a year since she'd visited Kirby's after 6 pm so it wasn't much of a surprise.

"Hey there, welcome to Kirby's- I'm Sam. What can I get for ya?" Sam smiled as he walked over, just enough to crinkle his nose. He didn't recognize the women on the other side of the bar, but that did nothing to change his next words. "Can I see some ID please?"

“Oh I want to keep you,” Jubilee replied with a flirtatious grin but she fished her wallet out of a pocket in her vest and pulled out an I.D card. “See, date of birth well within legal age, my Dude.”

“Always best to check, that settled- what can I get you ladies? Drinks? Food? Some highly encouraged glasses of water to go with any drinks?” Sam said, leaning forward to rest his arms on the bar.

"Hi Sam, it's nice to see a new to me face at this joint." Darcy held her ID out with an easy smile. "It's what, a grand and jail time for the bartender in NY if you get caught serving underage? Nobody's worth that, doesn't matter how adorable they are." She nudged Jubilee in the side as she said it, then tucked her ID back into her purse. "I'll have whichever of the new cocktails has rum in it, a water, the confit tater tots, and whatever this one's getting."

“So bossy,” Jubilee noted with a grin but she pondered the menu for a second more. “Think I’ll just like, have a Long Island Ice Tea and the teriyaki chicken meatballs.”

Jubilee took a moment to note the differences between this Sam and the one she’d known in another life and time. He still had that air of genuine goodness, but the accent had changed. She wondered what was in store for this one. Good things she hoped, but then she wanted that for most people.

“You been in town long?”

“Bout eight months now, came in from Muir, an’ given that I left Kentucky bout seven years ago and the accent hasn’t changed at all I’ll probably sound out of town for however long I’m up here.” He laughed, making sure to their orders written down. “I’ll get those food orders in for you ladies.”

“Dude, I’m like never gonna sass anyone on their accent,” Jubilee noted with a quick grin, letting the So-Cal deepen deliberately as she rested her chin on her hands. “But Muir you say? You wouldn’t be one of Moira’s ducklings?”

Sam ruffled the back of his head awkwardly. “Yeah, stayed long enough to get control of my powers and then came back to states…..never joined a team or nothin’ though, I’m just Sam…. What about you? Were you one’a Moira’s ducklin’s?”

“Nah, but she lived with us when I was younger tho,” Jubilee noted, grinning at the awkwardness. She’d never seen Sam this young before, it was adorable. “You should come visit again sometime.”

"You should! We've always got food and someone to chill with," Darcy agreed immediately. "I haven't met Moira, but there are plenty of people around that have. I'm sure you didn't meet everyone over Labor Day, although I remember seeing you around a bit. Gotta make friends with someone other than us old folks." She gave him a wink, but there was no flirt behind it. "You were on Muir, huh? Powers accident?"

“You can call it that….. it was a mine accident that my powers got me and another guy out of. But I wasn’t very good at controllin’ it and didn’t wanna saddle Mama with repair costs if I blasted through the house, so I agreed to go to Muir.”

Darcy's eyes were wide. "Well, at least there's that. Goodness knows I destroyed a few electronics and lightbulbs before we figured out I was electrokinetic. You keep in touch with your Mama?"

Jubilee settled back in her seat and waited for Sam's response, wondering if Mama Guthrie was as formidable a woman as the one from her original universe had been. Although if this Sam had as many siblings as the other Sam did, then one would have to be to keep that brood in line.

"Can't be easy being so far from kith and kin," she noted lest she be thought of as a slacker in the business of conversation-making. "Although maybe that was the point?"

“Talk with Mama every day and try to talk to my siblings the same amount,” Sam said with a small smile. “I send money home every month too, gotta make sure the kids’re all fed.”

"How many siblings do you have?" Darcy asked curiously. "I'm an only, but I grew up with my aunt and uncle's two, so it was more like being the oldest."

“Eight, all younger than me,” Sam said with a proud smile. “Youngest two start middle school this year.

Jubilee's first response to this from anyone other than a proper Southern Gentleman would have been 'Jesus, did your parents ever stop fucking?' but given that it was Sam, she kept the response internal but gave Darcy a look of pain at the effort.

"That's a lot of kids. Your Dad must have to work two jobs at least."

"Ooh, I bet that was a loooooooot of baby minding for you growing up, yeah? It's sweet of you to keep helping out, make sure they've got what they need without running your Mama too ragged. I hope you're enjoying your grown-up time here." Darcy's eyes lit up as the door to the kitchen swung open and two plates were slid in front of them. "Oooh, this smells amazing."

Sam grimaced a bit. "Yeah...... well I'm sure daddy would were he livin'...We make do, and I didn't mind lookin' after the littles."

He stepped aside to let the food through and then offered a more genuine smile to the two women. "I'm doin' okay for myself. Need to get out more though."

"I hope his memory is a blessing," Darcy said with a soft smile. "We can help a little with the getting out, if you want. I know you've met Clint, at least. Have you been to the community center? There's classes, events. I know there's some combo of speed meeting or dating coming up that I think some folks are gonna go to, and of course you're always welcome to come up to Xavier's and visit us." She took a bite of one of the tater tots and let out a groan. "This is amazing. Seriously, I'm gonna steal your chef and get their recipes."

“It never gets easier, but eventually you can think on them without wanting to cry,”

Jubilee left that gem of wisdom in the air between them as she pulled the teriyaki chicken towards herself and started to chow down with gusto. She hadn’t spent time thinking on her parents in years, easier to let them live in a box called ‘when I was a kid’ and leave it at that.

She had a lot of boxes, some bigger then others.

“It was easier to come to terms with it when you knew it was coming ten years before it happened.” Sam said quietly. He picked up a glass to clean just for something to fidget with. “Everything tasting okay?

Jubilee had just taken a huge bite of the teriyaki chicken so she gave him a thumbs up while she chewed and then gestured toward Darcy to speak.

Darcy took in Jubilee's stuffed cheeks. "Sometimes I think the only time this one is quiet is when her mouth is full of balls, but they must be delicious." She dropped one of the tater tots on the edge of the plate of meatballs, then speared one with a fork. "But do they taste the same if you close your eyes? Hopefully not."

Sam laughed a bit. "Wouldn't know, ain't tried 'em yet." Sam's head popped up with the sound of the bell at the door. "I'll leave you ladies to it, more customers await. Let me know if you need anything else."

“Less salty,” Jubilee noted as she swallowed and gave Sam a warm smile. “Off you go then, we’ll be sure to shout if we do.”
