Haller & Alani | Enter, A Psychologist
Oct. 10th, 2023 10:41 amThe bustling Tuesday morning at the center has Haller running into Alani and her externship advisor.
It was like any other day, the District X Community Centre was bustling at quarter to eleven in the morning and Alani was giving a man a tour through the facility. Though the student was noticeably lacking symbols as her image inducer worked to give her the appearance of a perfectly normal human woman. Accompanied by a tall man, who looked around with interest, she wasn’t expecting to run into anyone she knew, which was really her own fault. “Oh! Mr. Haller, I- this is one of the staff members I was referring to, Dr. Drumm, Mr. Haller is a counselor here. Uh, Mr. Haller, Dr. Drumm is a psychologist in the city that’s kind enough to both oversee my externship and give the Community Centre a walkthrough to make sure they have what they need to get some licensed psychologists in.”
The quickly fired string of words was followed by a chuckle as the doctor held out a hand to Haller. “Please, Jericho will do. If you have the time, I would love to talk with you.”
It took Jim a moment to register Alani as Alani — her crimson markings were so distinctive seeing her without them almost evoked a double-take. For an instant he wondered if it was for the benefit of her guest, but anyone actively touring a community center in District X was unlikely to be a bigot. Perhaps it was just for general safety. Femme, foreign, brown . . . and in grad school. It was likely enough people already attributed her presence to Minority Bingo without also knowing about her mutation.
"Jericho," Jim said, consciously pulling his eyes away from the unmarked Alani to accept the man's hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm David Haller." The rest of Alani's torrent of information released itself for processing. Jim raised an eyebrow. "You're considering offering support?"
Alani visibly relaxed when it became obvious Haller wasn’t about to blurt out her mutant status. She held herself back from speaking, instead offering a pleasant smile as her eyes darted back to the side of Dr. Drumm’s face that she could make out. In her time working with him, he had never espoused anti-mutant rhetoric but she desperately wanted this to go well for the community.
“My clinic was made aware of the possibility for a partnership with the Centre, as accredited psychologist are always in high demand, and, while we run the gamut of backgrounds, coming to a place where a patient feels most comfortable in these situations would be the most beneficial.” He spoke calm, matter of factly, as he released David’s hand. “It would take time, of course.”
Jim smiled, and it was genuine. "Of course. I have experience with mutation-related trauma and associated social issues, but there are also people with significant mental health needs that could really benefit from a licensed psychologist. And not everyone is willing to treat this specific population. Honestly, I haven't been volunteering here for very long and I can already think of a few people I wish I had someone to refer to. We'd love any help you're willing to offer."
The interest was plain on the man's face, nodding at Haller's words. "That's very good to know. If all goes well, I think we could maybe get some volunteers in within a month and a half? Ideally. Security would be my primary worry, cybersecurity, offices for the doctors, you understand. I will say — If people need help, I'd rather they get it as soon as possible. If you'd like to refer people to our clinic in the meantime, there wouldn't be any problem getting them in."
Finally, Alani saw her opportunity and leapt. "It couldn't hurt. We're coming up on the main office if you'd like to get their security information, Dr. Drumm." And that she was moving, leading the two men towards the office, well that was just because they were already close. Her eyes shot to Haller, head cocking slightly to the side, though a smile remained on her lips.
"And I'd be happy to get your contact information for referrals," Jim added, casting another line for the man. It was probably best to simply let things wash over him. He was good at that. Although thinking back on it, that was also why Warren kept showing up at his office with assorted baked goods and wild ideas, so possibly that wasn't always an appropriate response. Still, Alani seemed to want him around, and she knew how to talk to people. If there was one thing David Haller knew how to do, it was to be physically present in a room. The details could come later.
