(backdated) Following the flood, Alani finds Shatterstar offering assistance at the Community Centre and puts him to work.
The District X Community Centre was still filled with people, the gymnasium still offering temporary housing to those who couldn’t return to their homes. Volunteers also flitted through the halls. Alani was of the latter group, reassuring those she knew and those she didn’t as she tried to do what she could for the people. A tall redhead caught her eye and she turned quickly towards him. “Shatterstar, hey. Are you, uh, looking for someone?” As she spoke, her brows knit together, checking his facial expression for any signs of discomfort.
Shatterstar had his shoulders back, clearly not fully comfortable being around such a scene of natural destruction. "I was looking for you, or anyone else from Xavier's." He shifted from foot to foot once, uncharacteristically. "I'm here to help." Just because he, or rather Benji, felt fear around natural disasters and other 'acts of god' didn't mean he had an excuse to sit by and do nothing. It wasn't what an X-Man would do.
She watched him for a moment, eyes darting around his frame to gauge what she could read before she nodded. She could use an extra pair of hands and it would let her keep her eyes on him in case something was too much. "Well, if anyone will do, mind if I put you to work? I could use the hands, and I just sent my other volunteers to rest, because we've been here since... well since this all started." Alani puffed loose hairs out of her face though the offer was earnest.
Shatterstar nodded seriously. "I will do whatever you need me to do," he said seriously, like he was swearing an oath to her. "That's why I'm here." He trusted Alani to make good use of him.
"Alright, we're going to see what connections we can make. I've got Darkveil on hold to relocate some people once I find- well, once I find a place that'll take them." She had broken off in thought before shaking her head firmly, already thumbing through her phone. "I can't promise it'll be exciting, but what we're doing will help."
"Who is Darkveil?" He asked, sure that he knew everyone at least by reputation in the mansion. He didn't think about the fact other mutants had mutant names too and they weren't all "superhero" names. Which was silly, as he had a "mutant" name.
He pulled out his own cell phone, mirroring Alani. "What do you need me to do?"
And just like that the stress that had been firmly set on her face left as she beamed at the Shatterstar's question. "She's a teleporter that I weasled out of Quentin. Amazing lady, able to move people pretty instantly, just gotta have a place for her to move them, thus --" She motioned rather dramatically to her phone. "I run down whichever contacts I trust, find who's ready to go, and keep tabs so once clean up is done we can get them back. And if they don't want to go, which is just as understandable, we find supplies."
He nodded. He had brought supplies with him from the mansion when he had come over and had already been directed on where to put it. "I am good at making phone calls," he told her confidently. "I can call your contacts if that's what you need me to do."
"Oh thank god, you have no idea how many people hate calling people." That she generally didn't like talking over the phone was neither here nor there, when things like this were present it was just about getting the job done. "Okay, I'm going to send you some, and if they don't work out it's no stress, I don't imagine I'm the only person reaching out for this right now. And most of my firm Underground contacts are too far and it would require too much paperwork." Her tone suggested it wasn't entirely off the table.
And then came the realization that they'd still need supplies. "Sorry, I, brain fog, did you come with the others with supplies to hand out, dear? Because if yes, that - we should do that, then calls."
"I did come with the others, yes," Shatterstar responded. "I had already been directed where to put the supplies but I don't think they've been handed out yet."
He made mental note though, about what Alani said about her Underground contacts. Sometimes people spoke like Shatterstar was expected to know everything already, but he didn't mind piecing things together. Underground- probably the Mutant Underground? Probably got a lot of calls already, since DX was one of the most mutant heavy communities that 'Star had ever heard of.
"If they have it's not like I can argue, everyone needs them, and we already bought most things in the area thanks to a generous credit card donation." Alani led him through the centre as she talked, sliding past people with the ease of a person who almost did this for a living.
"Thank you, for helping. You don't need to, but people appreciate it. My powers aren't any good in situations like these, but, luckily, I grew up on an island that periodically floods or has lava and vog, so I come primed for these kinds of things." Her laugh was thin, trying to find humor in it.
"My powers are also not useful for this sort of thing," Shatterstar said. "Though, maybe someday they can be used to clear rubble. I would have to ask Terry what she thinks." He didn't ask her about where she was from- there were only so many islands with lava.
"It's very good that you are able to help," is what he said instead, not being able to imagine not being frozen in place and instead being spurred to action right away.
"Always important to learn new aspects of our powers, you never know the extent until you try everything." She agreed, tone turning rather upbeat as the conversation turned towards him and power training. Her own training had been effective but she didn't think of it fondly. "And I'm sure Terry will have some good options for ya if you're working with her."
Here, she paused to wave off a volunteer who had begun to approach them as they entered the supply distribution area that had been set up. "You don't happen to have superstrength, do you?"
Shatterstar shook his head. "No I don't. But I'm pretty strong. What do you need me for?" Physical labor he was more than ready for. While he was good at phone calls, he didn't want to make them when he was kind of antsy.
That earned a slight laugh from Alani before she shook her head. “No, no, I was just curious, I’m pretty strong myself but sometimes superstrength makes things easier. Maybe we distribute, collect people while we do so, and then give calls? Hm, decisions, decisions.” Realizing she was thinking out loud, she cleared her throat. “I think that makes the most sense.”
"I can distribute since you know who you are collecting," Shatterstar suggested, setting his shoulders back now that he knew what he was supposed to be doing. "thank you for letting me help. Direct me where to distribute."
“Well how can I say no to that deal?” Another laugh, as Alani grinned. “Alright, I know there’s a family downstairs that needs supplies… probably two packs because they’ve gotta wee babe nursing, and if we can get them a nice place to stay all the better.” Is was all said while she scanned the area, face almost eerily neutral if not for her furrowed brows. Too many thoughts, if only things were simple.
“We can distribute more on the way down.”
"'Wee babe', do you spend a lot of time with Terry?" Shatterstar joked as he started to head towards the donations to bring the bundles down to the family. And if he made sure that the little baby got one of the better blankets that was no one's business but his own.
