Sharon swings by Topaz's suite to meet Midnight, and discovers the joy of suitcases. Backdated to August 25.

"Your world is not ending, you know," Topaz informed her crying cat as she picked her up out of her suitcase - again. Midnight let out another yowl, clambering to jump off her human's shoulder. She ran across the room and up her tree. "I know, your life is so hard."

She was starting to re-think taking Midnight with her. Travel was terrible, and Midnight was delicate (well, she thought she was delicate). But the idea of leaving her behind for at least a month just made Topaz sad. She went to the kitchenette to get the treats, turned to look at Midnight... and she was in the suitcase again.

"You know I'm bringing you with me, right? You have your own bag and everything."

"She senses impending change. Very distressing."

The tone was casual, directly behind her -- and coming from a man-sized, purple-furred cat lounging on her couch. She gave Topaz a lazy flick of the tail and yawned, exposing thumb-sized canines.

"Door was not locked," explained the cat, sliding from the couch like a creature for whom bones were optional. She stretched.

Topaz looked at the giant cat for a moment, then at her phone. "Too early for sleep deprivation to be setting in. Sharon, I presume?"

She walked back to the suitcase as she spoke, offering Midnight a few treats.

Sharon's tail gave a satisfied flick. "And you are Topaz. Reputation proceeds me. As it should. Came to pay respects." The great cat shook herself before padding after Topaz. However, instead of commandeering the space she stopped a few paces in and settled on the rug. She settled her weight to one side, back foot kicked out so her stomach was partially exposed. A pink nose lifted to scent the air. Her tail beat the floor loose and slow.

"Stories have been told to me of Midnight," said Sharon.

Midnight gobbled up the treats, then jumped out of the suitcase, eyeing Sharon with an abundance of caution. Seven years in the mansion had given her a higher tolerance for things like other animals and general Weird that would send most cats fleeing into a corner or under the bed. But giant cat thing was a new one for her. She approached slowly, sniffing a lot, watching every movement before she got close enough to reach out and lightly tap her stomach. Topaz watched, smiling.

"She tends to be pretty friendly. There's a lot of socialization opportunities around here."

"Many pets here. So far all very friendly." Keeping her movements slow and non-confrontational, the purple cat stretched slowly beneath Midnight's inquisitive paw. She swung a head larger than Midnight's entire body around to give the cat's hindquarters a light sniff before moving on to scent the glands near her ears and jaw.

"You are librarian," Sharon remarked, almost as if the cat's owner was an afterthought. "Alani told me. She is assistant. I have seen the ribbon."

Midnight started purring loudly, deciding that this newcomer was welcome on her turf. She butted her head forward slightly, letting Sharon know her ministrations were welcome.

"She's very proud of that ribbon." Topaz didn't mind being an afterthought. It gave her a chance to keep folding laundry while Midnight was distracted. And Sharon was good company.

"Yes. She made it herself." Sharon rolled over in mock-surrender beneath Midnight's welcoming headbutt, a considerably louder purr issuing from her own throat. She leaned forward and gave Midnight a lick on the cheek. It was like watching the cat's head disappear beneath a pink trowel.

"You are going?" Sharon asked as Midnight sneezed.

Midnight shook her head after the sneeze, clearly confused by the small expulsion of air. "For a little while, yeah. Work trip. I usually leave Midnight with someone here, but apparently she gets sad when I'm gone. And I don't want to leave her for that long."

"She pines. This is understandable." Sharon gave the smaller cat a final affectionate nudge and climbed to her feet. She padded over to one of the open suitcases, shamelessly inspecting the contents. "What is your work? You are an X-Man? Or it is a library emergency?"

"Not an X-Man, no." Topaz smiled a bit as she watched Sharon poke at her suitcase. "I have people in London who help me with things from time to time, but at the moment they need help, and I can't fix it over the phone this time."

"Most cryptic. A mysterious library indeed." Something about the shape of the suitcase was calling to Sharon. Perhaps it was the traces of Midnight she could smell in it: there had to be something to it. Curiously, Sharon stepped into the partially packed suitcase and began to turn in small circles.

"It wouldn't make any more sense if I gave more details, trust me." Topaz grabbed a pile of t-shirts and made her way to the suitcase Sharon wasn't padding around in. "Is... that a cat thing? Sorry if that's rude, it just seems like every cat I've ever met has to sit in a suitcase if it's open."

"Is the shape. It calls to us." Sharon found an appropriate position and lay down, her entire body fit snugly into the suitcase. She purred, her tail spilling over the edge in a blissful flick. "Yes. Suitcase is my personal Amigara Fault. This is my hole. It was made for me."

Midnight circled the suitcase a few times, then jumped into the open side to take a nap. Topaz sighed, but there was undeniable amusement in her expression. "All right, you guys can have the suitcase for a bit. Just remember I can't bring you both in checked luggage."

I love the logs where Sharon gets to meet the mansion pets, and Topaz and Midnight were a lovely pair for her to meet. I'm glad they got to chat before Topaz went off to do her business. On a Topaz note I loved how just factual she took everything, rolling with this version of Catseye rocking up and making her way into her suitcase as they kept talking like it was totally normal (which, the mansion, maybe it is at this point), while still being amused - which feels rare for her and always a treat to read. And Sharon paying her animal respects while gauging people is always fun.
