Behold A Black Horse - Log 1
Nov. 26th, 2023 01:15 pmStacy-X contacts Darcy about a co-worker currently in Troy, Alabama.
Stacy-X was, in general, easy to work for. She had a preternatural sense of when someone needed to talk and otherwise, relied on her tremendous organizational abilities and hand-picked staff to ensure that the X-Ranch ran like a well-oiled (or most often, well-lubed) machine. Which meant getting a call from her outside of their normal schedule was absolutely one that needed answering.
Stacy's predictability in communication had Darcy's eyebrows raising, fingers tapping her earbud to accept the call as she stood abruptly from the couch she'd been talking to Kevin from. 'Stacy?' she mouthed at him, face turning towards the window as she answered. "What's wrong?" She skipped the pleasantries. If it was important enough to call at odd hours, it was important enough to drop pretenses.
"I've got an emergency. Jenn Dunn just called me in a panic. Said people all around her are dying. Cars are just careening off the road and people are dropping dead on the sidewalk." Stacy said, her voice urgent. "I'd say she was talking nonsense, but Jenn is one of the most level headed people I know. She's in Troy, Alabama. Tell me you have some idea of what is going on?"
"Shiiiiiii–hold on a sec." A few steps had her leaning over Kevin's shoulder to commandeer his laptop. The images on the breaking news banner had her eyes wide, fingers digging into the mouse as she tried to figure out if there was any known cause. "I can honestly say that I have no idea, but she's not lying. It looks like they're sending the military in to cordon the whole area off. Shit. Can she get somewhere safe, out of the way enough that the military might miss her in any searches?" She liked Jenn. Smart, quiet, friendly. She was part of the Ranch book club, and had been one of the first people to actually welcome Darcy into the ranks. If it was possible, she'd return the favor by getting the other woman out of this mess.
"She said that she'd already tried and the military turned her back. Now... there's troops in suits looking for people. She's going to hide out." Stacy said. "I'll try and get her back on the phone, but you need to get her out."
"Okay." Darcy took a deep breath and straightened. "I'll do everything I can to get her extracted safely without bringing the military down on our heads too. Let me put something together, and I'll call back once we have a plan." She disconnected without fanfare and turned to the sideboard, prepping a single shot for herself and a glass for Kevin. Hers was knocked back quickly, but she brought the other back to his desk and set it near his hand.
"I need a team and a plan."
"Quick response? Not our best situation. I think you need to talk to a teleporter and the X-fellows." Kevin said, taking in her intent look.
"Yeah. Shit. Military's involved, definitely a teleporter, don't want to start a war, so... strength and distraction?" Darcy paced as she talked. "Military's already seen her, weird deaths... CDC and biochemical experts?" She paused mid-pace, and cursed again. "Shield. FUCK." Her fingers were back on the keyboard in a second, pulling up a secure tunnel into their data. "Yep. Uuuuuuugh. Okay. Definitely distraction, some stealth. Kane. Clarice. See who else is available. Me, of course." She eyed Kevin. "Any suggestions?"
"You put together your team build. I'll get Colbert and the rest on this and see what we can do to support things." Kevin said, pulling on his jacket as he stood up.
"Thanks Boss, I'll get on it." She gave his shoulder a squeeze as he stood, already moving towards the couch to slip her heels back on. "Even just an extra eye in case of bullshit could be useful."
"We'll work back-up intel. But you need to get boots on the ground, so do it. We'll handle the shop behind you." Kevin said.
"Of course. You mind working up a plan with Stacy? I assume she'll be happy to have Jenn on site full-time, but she'll need to get a room ready. See what we can do about any particularly treasured possessions, new identity?" Darcy's voice lowered to a mumble as she thought out loud. "I'll be in the small conference room."
"Stacy usually has a back-up plan, but I will make sure things are in place." Kevin said, giving her a shooing motion. "You get your ducks in order. I'll make sure everything else is ready behind it."
She grinned and blew him a kiss as she opened the door, pulling it shut behind her.
