A ladies' day in NYC is just what Inez, Clarice, Darcy, Nora, Terry, and Jean need to freshen up their wardrobes for the summer... (Highly backdated.)
Inez flicked through the rack of clothing, sliding dress after dress from one side to another until she found one that caught her eye. There hadn't been many as of yet but she was hoping that -
"Ooh, how about this one?" she asked, pulling the hanger out and holding a simple floral print number out for the others to examine, one eyebrow slightly arched. It was a light tan colour with pink floral designs woven here and there, nothing too flashy but that was fine by her.
She held it up to herself to gauge its length while waiting for feedback, humming and hawing to herself and chewing her lip.
"Clarice is the real fashionista, but I like it for you," Darcy replied, moving the edge of the hanger so she could see the back and sides. "Especially those cute little cutouts on the side."
"Very country," Clarice stated, "but then, so are you. Try it on. The cutouts are very on trend right now," she had a long, flowing maxi dress that was practically a muumuu in hand that she held up to herself and made the material sway gently. It had an almost muted leopard print to it, "I think I like this one."
Jean nodded in approval at the print. "Nice. Seems like a winning combo of comfy and stylish," she said. She grabbed a wide brimmed summer hat from a nearby rack and put it on her head.
"God, I'd love to go to the beach. It's been forever."
"Mm..." Terry hummed quietly in agreement as she eyed the bathing suits on the next row over. "You're no' wrong, Jeanie. Mayhap we make a trip of it? Get house right on the beach... oh! I've ordered several bottles of zinc sunscreen, if anyone besides Jeanie and myself turn up burnt t'a crisp if they step into the sun for longer than two minutes at a time unprotected. Also," she said, holding up a hunter green cotton dress with white panels sewn into the skirt. "What d'we think o'this one?"
"Those flutter sleeves are going to wrinkle like no one's business. There's enough fabric, though, you could have them altered into a simple cap," Nora said from the back, where she was leaning against a display table with a coffee so irished that it would more accurately qualify as a cocktail. She hadn't intended to join this trip, but he'd run into Darcy and Jean on their way out and they'd asked for his - or rather, Nora's, opinions. "It doesn't have to be a complicated plan. Just hop in a cab and you can be on the sand at Brighton in less than an hour." She pointed out.
"And not as lousy with tourists as Coney Island," Darcy agreed. "Little Odessa's nice, but we'd have to watch out for some of the tracksuits." She scooted closer to Inez, beckoning Nora closer. "You need a cute new sundress too, Bosslady. What do you think of this one for me?" It was dark purple with thin white vertical stripes and cutouts at the waist, paired with short, puffy sleeves. "I've got at least one bra I could wear under it."
"Ooh, purple'd look real nice on ya," Inez said without thinking, stopping her unsolicited opinion to Darcy before she said anything about a bra or no bra thankfully. "Those're great too," she added to Clarice and Terry and turned to smile at Nora. "Gosh, a trip to a beach does sound amazing right about now... it's been too long."
"I like those UV protectant suits," Clarice answered, "Not as stylish, but I am not doing the radiation thing again," no thank you very much, "And yes, Nora, you need a dress. Make bad decisions. Have fun!"
"My bad decisions rarely start or end with a dress." Nora said, eyes flicking across the racks. The styles were very American, and Nora's range was largely European, but she could use something that was more local. She paused at a cream coloured sparse floral print, with a plunging Queen Anne neckline, looking it over with the intensity of a surgeon as she checked the lines.
"Fancy," Jean mused with a smile before grabbing a green jumpsuit that caught her eye. "I like how jumpsuits look, but I'm never a fan of having to remove them to get anything done."
"You're tall enough," Terry murmured, still fingering the sleeves Nora had suggested changing. "Y'could pull off a jumpsuit. Though I'd worry about the whole loo situation." Turning to look at the rest of the group, she asked, "Does anyone know how to mend or alter clothing?" Then she reconsidered and waved her own question out of the air. "Nevermind. Nora, I love that one for you."
"I can," Clarice answered, "I make clothing, too. Though, not as much as I used to," mostly just things for herself or sometimes specialty garments for Marie-Ange and others. "And I like jumpsuits. You can survive the bathroom in them. Or get one with snaps up the legs like babies wear."
"No snaps up the legs, that's just begging the weirdos to be extra weird," Darcy said with a shake of her head. "I do like the jumpsuit though, Jean. Very pretty color and you could dress it up a bit with some heels and jewelry. Maybe a nice belt, too."
She turned to Inez after with a wink. "Maybe something a little more gussied up than usual for you too? Date night, nice but not super fancy? We'll go out sometime."
"Y'sure you don't work here, ma'am, because I'm pretty sure y'just sold me on that," Inez joked, returning the wink. "That does sound nice, though, super fancy ain't me but somethin' nice, well." She grinned at Darcy and blushed the tiniest bit. "It's nice t'have someone y'can dress up pretty for every now and then.
She put the floral print number back on the hanger then flipped through a few more before finding another sundress that caught her eye. It was slightly shorter than the last, but instead of a floral print it sported a ruffled waist and was a very pleasant shade of blue. "...oh, how about this?" she asked, tugging it out and holding it up to herself.
Nora wisely held off a comment of 'it likely not being on long enough to matter' and gave her an appraising eye. "You've got just enough leg for it." She said, flipping the dress she'd been looking at earlier over her forearm.
"Very nice," Jean said. "It's been forever since I've been shopping with a group of---Actually, I can't remember the last time I've been shopping with a group full of ladies," she added with a smile.
"Hey, who you calling a lady?" Clarice asked teasing. "Speak for yourself. And Nora. The rest of us are fully capable of getting itself kicked out of the filthiest bar if we want to. If drink in it," she added a wide belt to the pile folded over one arm. Some were outfits, some just pieces she liked and thought might fit.
"Are you?" Nora said, a sideways smile as quiet and deadly as a shark. "I know a place or two. But I think you ladies should stick to your plan. It was 'The Little Mermaid' right?" She patted Clarice on the arm. "Enjoy your movie. If you want to do something else, today isn't the day. But if you do, leave me a message and I'll let you know." With that, she bundled up her dress selection and headed for the cashier. "Lovely time, ladies. Let's do this again soon!"
