Disney comes in handy as Sooraya and JPC save a little girl and her mom
A long time ago, New York City had been a maze of cables above buildings, taking power to and fro. But after a great blizzard had pulled down lines and left the city in darkness, they had begun burying lines to protect them from the elements. In the modern day, New York City had something like 90 percent of its power drawn from underground lines. Which meant that there wasn't much danger of downed power lines causing problems in a flood. Unfortunately, it did mean that flooded underground spots like subway stations ran the risk of hitting any exposed or worn power infrastructure.
Which was why Jean-Phillipe found himself in thigh-high waders, pushing his way through water that occasionally sloshed up to the very top of the boots. A constant mutter of imprecations in French accompanied his work.
"You seem like you are enjoying yourself." Sooraya came to hoover next to JP, her form a simple cloud of sand. "I just dropped of that lady at the safe point. I can tag along to get other out?"
Jean-Phillipe at least managed to bite off the more sulfurous reaction to Sooraya. "What part of this looks like fun, sablette?" he groused. He was going to spend the better part of a week getting warm again after all this dampness, even if Angelo took pity on him and wrapped him up in a whole body hug. "Unless that was sarcasm, in which case I have never been more proud of you."
"That is for me to know and for you to never find out." She quipped as she kept hovering next to him... Jean-Phillipe was so easy to tease sometimes and it kept her mind off the consequences of this storm for DX. "How much of this subway station do you still need to check? I've got a report from a school outing missing at the one south of here."
"One more pass." Jean-Phillipe kept dutifully slogging along. A woman and her child were stuck in an alcove above the electrified water, clinging to each other worriedly. The Frenchman's gruff exterior instantly gave way to politeness and if the cheer seemed a bit forced, he trusted that only Sooraya would be the wiser. "Bon soir," he greeted them. "We are here to help get you to safe ground." He eyeballed the child - probably around four or five to his best guess - and the height of the water. "Would you like to ride on my shoulders, petite?" he asked gently. "I have powers that mean I do not have to worry about the electricity. So as long as you keep your feet up under my arms, it will be as simple as a walk in the park with your maman." His eyes flicked to Sooraya, hoping she would be able to handle the other.
Sooraya quickly glanced around, taking in her options. There weren't many. She floated up, pulling the sand together to a tight, flat sheet of sand. "Ask her if she can crawl on to me?" She relayed over the comm. "It's the only way I see to get her out quickly and I can carry her easily."
Jean-Phillipe cocked his head. This seemed new, or at least something he hadn't seen Sooraya do yet. "This sheet, or carpet, or what have you, is my teammate using her powers. It is quite safe-" not that he knew whether it would be or not, but he knew Sooraya had experience with flight and also moving her sand "-and we will be out of this place in only a moment's time." The woman was dubious, but the child already on Jean-Phillipe's shoulders was young enough that this all seemed like an adventure, and cajoled her mother into riding the 'magic carpet'.
She made sure not to dip even the tiniest bit when the woman settled and slowly started moving. Gently she hummed the tune of 'A Whole New World', even if only Jean-Phillipe could hear her. "Come on, join in. It will be a good distraction for them." She gently poked him. "I bet the girl would love it."
"Oh very well." Jean-Phillipe was not about to tell where he had learned the songs from the golden age of Disney movies, and his singing voice was nothing to write home about, but keeping the young girl occupied as they exited the station was worth the teasing from Sooraya.
