Julia is shot and dies in Jay's arms.
CW: Gun violence, minor character death

She felt it before she heard the familiar crack of a gunshot, but it still took her a moment to really register and accept that, just as she'd moved in to press a kiss to Jay's lips, she'd been shot. Julia wasn't sure what expression showed on her face as she half-fell on top of him, but her hand went immediately to her shoulder.

"Jay, baby," she whispered, knowing they weren't safe where they were but not knowing where they would be safe. Pulling her hand away from the hole she'd found on the back of her shoulder - no exit wound, Julia saw that her fingers were covered in blood.

Another shot rang out, but it went wide and the blood was rushing in Julia's ears, anyway, as she looked up to catch Jay's eyes.

"Julia, angel, it's alright, I've got you," Jay said, holding her up and some hysterical part of him that didn't even hear the shots, didn't realize the shots had been meant for him and not Julia, had the thought that it was like the first time they had danced.

He moved to scoop her into his arms as he had so many times before. Another shot rang out. He heard the eldest Cabot brother's voice, but not the words.

"It's okay, I'll get you to a doctor, I've got you." Jay said going for the running start he had to do to get off the ground, wings to malformed from binding to be able to lift off immediately.

Another shot rang out, just shy of his wing.

She couldn't see the color of the blood on her hand - venous or arterial - and it was probably luck more than anything that had Jay pressing her wounded shoulder against his chest, but some part of her knew. Even as he ran and leapt, even as that familiar and exhilarating sense of weightlessness sank her stomach nearly to her spine - some part of Julia knew that even if he got her to the hospital alive, she wasn't going to make it out again.

Railing at the universe for how unfair it all was, for what it'd do to Jay, seemed like the worst waste of the time she had left on Earth. If the preachers were right, she wasn't going to go anywhere good, but Julia couldn't make herself believe in a God that would've made her this way just to condemn her for it. Still, just in case the preachers were right, she knew what she wanted to do - what she wanted to say. She was worried the words wouldn't make it to him over the rush of the wind, but she should've known better. Jay was the one person who'd always listened to her, always heard her.

"Baby," she managed, pain radiating from her shoulder with every jostling beat of his wings. Raising her bloody fingers to his face, Julia traced his cheek, left her fingerprints on him the same way he'd left his on her - indelible. "Jay - I love you." Tears tracked from the corners of her eyes down her temples and into her hair. "I'm always gonna love you." She gasped softing, trying to hide it against his chest.

He beat his wings with an urgency as they rose into the air, feeling her blood soak through his shirt and onto his chest while he held her against him. Jay felt the panic rising in his chest- the closest hospital was out in Burkseville and even driving and not flying there was a chance they wouldn't make it.

He soared up above the tree-line until it blurred, faster than he'd ever managed before but it wasn't going to be enough, she was gettin' colder already and it wasn't just the wind-chill.

"Don't say that like that," he said, speaking into her hair as his voice hitched. "You'll be fine, I love you too, don't go talking like you aren't going to be okay," he was begging her and it was selfish and he was leaning into the bloody imprint of her hand. "I love you too, angel, you'll be alright," he insisted, voice starting to break.

Important things — Julia needed to make sure… but her eyelids kept getting heavier and even though she could see the stars, they’d started to blur in her periphery. “Baby, you… you tell ‘em… tell ‘em it was JB, alright. You gotta…”

Clearing her throat was difficult and Julia lost her train of thought, just the pain and the cold juxtaposed with Jay’s warmth and how he kept on whispering sweet things to her. “Jay, can y’sing somethin’ for me? Somethin’… some… thin’ sweet?”

"You can tell everyone yerself, don't-" but he knew, he knew that he was just saying that for himself at this point. He held her even tighter. He could feel how much blood she was losing, feel it sticking to his chest.

He was never able to deny her anything, not when it came down to it. "Whatever you want, angel," he said and started to sing, nothing but his own voice which was breaking slightly and watery from unshed tears. "It's you and me and all of the people, and I don't know why I can't keep I can't keep my eyes off of you. Something about you now I can't quite figure out, everything she does is beautiful. Everything she does is right."

Losing the strength to keep touching Jay’s cheek, Julia let it fall to her own chest as she listened to him sing. “That’s... real nice, baby… real… pretty. Jay…” She said his name on a soft exhale, finally letting herself close her eyes. She listened to the low rumble of his voice in his chest, the beat of his heart as he pushed himself too far too fast, and wished more than anything that she’d had more time to love him.

"'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to prove."

He kept singing even as he felt her cool in his arms, kept singing every one of their songs for her as if they could bring her back, be a prayer powerful enough to keep her alive for just a little longer.

He only stopped once he landed in front of the emergency room, and only to scream for help. By then it was too late.

This was beautifully crafted and heart-wrenching, but I enjoyed how, from Jay's perspective, there was only one detail that mattered.

My favorite line: "He heard the eldest Cabot brother's voice, but not the words."
I think we've all had moments like that.
