(slightly backdated) Alani and Sam get drinks and discuss eXcalibur's most recent mission and a date.

Alani has gotten a booth, even though it was just the two of them to give some semblance of privacy in a public face, and started the night immediately with a pitcher of Long Beach iced tea. “Sooooo,” she raised a brow meaningfully, “care to discuss private matters in public?”

Sam laughs and blushes, grinning down at the table. "He was very sweet. Was all impressed by my sheet pan meal like I didn't learn how to make it when I was seven, and got so happy when he saw I actually made the damn Rube Goldberg machine. Apparently no one else did even though that's specifically what he asked for. It was... it was really nice."

That got a toothy grin, brow raising even more though amusement was clear. “Well I’m very glad then, and, let’s be serious, he can’t expect me do make a machine, I was in Florida too and then I got home, screamed into a pillow and set up a girls night with Fi. But, sounds like a very good birthday nonetheless.” Here she paused to look down at her phone, a different phone than contained her contacts, before shaking her head and swiping left.

Sam blushed again. “Yeah…he uh he got me pearls he harvested from an oyster…….he’s…..I don’t know how to react to this……. You okay? Need to talk about the mission?”

That got a raised brow, though Alani politely said nothing, instead opting to take a sip of her drink. That she was still grinning in amusement said everything. "Hmm? Nah, I don't talk about work outside of work, makes the separation between all my jobs a lot easier. If that was a polite attempt to not ask about Namor, then know I'm not gonna burn his house down, but I might bite him if he was in my viewing range." All of this was said almost sagely.

"If you go for the shoulder there's a nerve there that's really good for targeting." Sam said, nodding sagely. "I mean.....I've never been in a fight, I have no advice for you."

“If I’m biting Namor I’m going for the throat, like a dog.” Her voice was entire deadpan as she squinted at something on her phone before swiping right. “I do take self-defense classes but that’s only for defense, I’m a pacifist until someone endangers Meg- my friends.” Alani quickly corrected.

Sam’s eyebrows shot up and he grinned, leaning across the table to better bother her. “Oh so there’s a girl? Which one is Meg? I’m assuming she’s at the mansion too.”

"There's always a girl with me, Samford." Alani couldn't keep a straight face, a peal of laughter following before she shook her head. "Sorry, couldn't help that. Meggan's a friend, though, a girl and a friend. She works with me and Clint and she's great. You'll get on like a house on fire."

“You’ll have to introduce me.” Sam said, leaning back in the booth. “Oh! Also! Keep meanin’ to ask! You looked up my first hand experience with TNT yet?”

"I will." She agreed brightly. Then she circled the rim of her glass with a finger, before nodding. "I did. 'Miraculous Mine Escape' was the headline that sticks out, though I may be paraphrasing. You and another miner were freed and both survived. Is that right?"

“Lewis, he’s….he was my Daddy’s best friend. He’s still around, I’m supposed to see him when I’m home for Christmas. And it was less freed and more I spontaneously developed rocket ass and blasted us outta the mine……after I was the idiot who mislaid the dynamite in the first place.” Sam rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “I got a nasty burn on my left arm ‘fore the rocket ass kicked in.”

The amusement that had started with 'rocket ass' evaporated as Sam described the injury, teeth showing briefly in a grimace before she schooled that away. "Good god. I- I'm glad you got the two of you out of there, a burn's better than death, but- from the explosion? Is that how you found out you were, I'm sorry, I can't not quote you here -- 'nigh invulnerable'?"

“Yeah, I didn’t have a scratch on me ‘cept for the burn. Also how we figured I could help other folks be nigh invulnerable if they were blastin’ with me cause Lewis didn’t have an injury from blasting through the rock just what fell on ‘im ‘fore I blasted.” Sam shrugged. “I got fired anyhow- can’t blame ‘em, I’d’a been a liability down there.”

"You were a child." It wasn't a question. Alani sat up a little straighter, brow raised pointedly as she stopped scrolling potential hookups to look at Sam. "Like, that you both lived is beyond great and, I mean, you were trying to support your family. Did they, I mean... did anyone ever find out you were a mutant?"

“I was nineteen. Goin’ on thirty-nine.” Sam said with a shrug. “Most of the miners kinda figured I am, but they ain’t said anythin’. Most of town doesn’t know though, not really somethin’ we broadcasted. I was causin’ enough problems without that bein’ public knowledge.”

Sam rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “I was the reason the Cabot matriarch had the police on speed dial.”

That raised her eyebrow even more, if possible, though confusion had taken the edge of severity off of Alani's face. "Okay, wait, wait, wait, back up a bit. Were you a little problem causer, Sam Guthrie? Before you manifested and were busy raising your siblings, you were also the subject of police calls?" A slight grin snuck onto her face.

“I know the sherif by his first name for entirely the wrong reasons.” Sam grinned. “And I was gettin’ in fights while raising my siblings too. Prolly got in my first real fight when I was seven? Maybe eight? Abraham Lee pulled Paige’s pigtails in church so I beat him up after Sunday school.”

"Ah," Alani nodded in understanding. She opened her mouth, before laughing and shaking her head. “See, didn’t see that happening at all. But it checks out, you’re dad — oh hated that but, to your little siblings, I have to assume with the parent-teacher conferences. This all checks out. I thought maybe you were committing crimes, and was surprised, not punching jerks.”

Sam shrugged. “I mean I definitely shoulda been arrested for assault given how badly I’d beat ‘em…but the sherif was kind enough to understand that things were a mite fucked at home and let me slide with a warnin’ oh about a hundred times.”

Sam bit his lip. “I was also enough of an issue that when I played baseball I’d have to hand my bat directly to the coach when I was done….an’ then there was that time I was at a rock concert in Louisville…… or that time at the county fair- and then there was this other time- yeah I was….. a bit of a spitfire.”

Her eyes had brightened, widened as he continued to speak and though there was a classic smile on her lips, Alani was obviously surprised at the information. "Okay, wait, wait, wait, we can put a pin in me trying to get laid. Tell me more about the county fair thing. I wanna hear about spitfire Sam."

I love the ease these two have together.

""There's always a girl with me, Samford." Alani couldn't keep a straight face, a peal of laughter following before she shook her head." This made me smile.

“I know the sherif by his first name for entirely the wrong reasons.” Oh Sam, you're delightful.
