Madin and April (mostly April) get to removing the main kitchen. The very destroyed main kitchen. Thanks, Hope.
April had woken up with the remnants of a headache after dealing with the tiny redheaded terror the night before, and her short walk with Haller (AWAKE! UP!) had really brought home the destruction. Once the two of them parted, she ambled around aimlessly for a bit, and was contemplating a mid-morning nap when cursing drew her in the direction of someone with purple skin. As she got closer she realized it was Madin, and with a final leap she landed behind him. "I HELP"
Madin jumped at the sudden arrival, energy flaring almost imperceptibly at their fingertips before being tamped down again. Heart pounding, they said, sounding almost calm, "That's awesome. The kitchen is absolutely cooked."
"SCARY APRIL" She tilted her head at Madin, eyes on their fingers. "SORRY" The scent of smoke was obvious even with her nose being slightly dulled in this form, and she was grateful she didn't rely on the main kitchen's blenders to make her shakes. "LIFT. THROW. WHERE?"
"Um. Jesus. I don't know. Somewhere outside? I hadn't really got that far, honestly." Madin sighed. "There's just so much here, you know?"
"LOTS SMASH" April agreed, pointing toward a relatively bare patch of lawn just far enough away from the house to not get in the way of actual repairs. "THERE" With that, she took off with a bounding leap, disappearing into the kitchen for a few minutes, then emerging with the battered remains of the kitchen island. She wasn't able to determine if any of it was salvageable, but she set it down gently just in case. "GOOD?"
Madin blinked at the flurry of movement, watching the kitchen island vanish. Had she just torn it out of the floor?
"Can you please do the stove? It's heavy as."
"EASY" April ducked back inside. It didn't smell like gas, just smoke, but she was careful with the hose to the range and attached ovens. The most awkward part was moving it safely, but she sprayed webbing at the middle for security and to hold the hoses in place, stuck one end securely to her midsection, and stretched her tendrils out to the end. "TRAIN CHOO CHOO" left a joyful mouth as she played caboose for about 1100 lbs of stainless steel.
Madin laughed briefly at it all before ducking under the sink with a pair of spanners to cap off the pipes. "Do you think you can do the cabinets without fucking the walls? They're probably attached."
She looked at the cabinets briefly, giving a very light tug and pressing her fingers to the seam against the wall. "TRY" she finally decided, elongating one hand into a proto-crowbar. It didn't have the hook on the end, but the tips of her fingers - what would be her nails, normally, and claws in this form - were thin, flat, and angled just enough to get her a bit of leverage.
Getting her hand and forearm to safely wiggle the cabinets from the wall was a chore, but little by little the places where they had been nailed in began to come loose, only bringing the occasional small clump of drywall along for the ride.
This was going so much faster than Madin had anticipated. In the end, they just leaned back against the wall while April smoothly removed everything with a fraction of the struggle they'd have experienced.
April tossed a rag at Madin's face once she noticed. "SLOW" came out, followed by a rumbling laugh, before she shifted her hands into something resembling a shovel or dustpan. "SWEEP"
"You want me to sweep?" They fetched a broom and started, working the smaller pieces of debris, dropped Tupperware and smashed crockery into a pile.
"HERE. THEN BAG." Two tendrils tapped her hands before settling, staring intently at Madin as she waited.
"Stop staring at me," Madin muttered softly but they did as told, sweeping it into the bag.
"SORRY" April ducked her head, and the eyes shrank just slightly so she couldn't peek up at Madin as she grabbed the bag to haul to the dumpster. "NO BLINKS"
We are the next stage in human evolution. We do not hold other mutants to human behavioural mores. Magneto's voice echoed in Madin's ears. They bit back their continued desire to argue about whether April was or wasn't staring. They knew better than that.
"All g."
April very carefully didn't direct her eyes at Madin as they continued to work. It was difficult, and her hindbrain really wanted to focus on the predator just barely visible in the corner of her sight, but she kept her eyes on the tasks at hand until all that was left to remove was a little bit of debris and the small pile of items they had been able to salvage. "OTHERS" she asked eventually, briefly turning to look at Madin's face before turning away again, tendrils pointing at the pile of stuff. "WASH. STORE."
Madin looked over at the pile and shrugged. "I have no idea who that shit belongs to. They can sort their own stuff out. If they wanted it, they'd have collected it already."
She shrugged and gave a thumbs up. Kyle might know who stuff belonged to or where it needed to go, but it could sit there just as well until construction started. "DONE?"
"Done." Madin gave her a thumbs up. "Thank you. This would have been so much harder without you."
