A chance encounter as Terry checks the DXCC kitchen to make sure it's properly socked for the upcoming holiday. (Backdated.)
Terry stared around the industrial kitchen at the District X Community Centre, hands on her hips as she considered the supplies she'd had delivered just a half hour ago. The twenty-second was fast approaching and she wanted to make sure everything was sorted for the cookies and that they wouldn't have to make any emergency runs to the grocers for Christmas dinner supplies.
She hummed herself upward to check the cabinets she couldn't reach while simply standing, a clipboard with a checklist in one hand and a pen in the other.
Since when were thirteen year olds too cool for juice boxes? "It's okay," Jessie assured the pack of juice boxes as she walked them back to the kitchen. "Someday someone will come along to drink you."
She walked to the fridge - then stopped when she saw the hovering woman. That definitely caught her attention for a minute, but it was something else that drew Jessie in. "Pretty," she said, almost reverently. "I love your hair."
Terry paused in her tallying for a moment and grinned at the young woman. "Thank you! It's a beast sometimes in the mornin', but I am a tad vain about it." She let herself sink back down to the ground and tucked the pen into the top of the clipboard before offering her hand to shake. "I'm Terry. It's lovely t'meet you."
"Jessie," she introduced herself eagerly, shaking Terry's hand. "It's great to meet you too."
And, without a conscious thought from her, her bubble-gum pink hair started to darken to red.
"Oh," Terry said, her grin widening just a bit. "I like that. And it goes so well with your complexion!"
"What? Oh-" Jessie reached up to grab a lock of hair and drag it in front of her eyes. "Oh hey. I swear, I can't just like anyone's hair anymore, it changes every time I do. But it's such a nice color, I'm okay with this!"
"Well, anytime you'd like t'borrow it, love, you're welcome to it," Terry said, still smiling. "Thank y'for bringin' the juice back to the refrigerators. I'm sure the little's'll enjoy them, since apparently the middles don't."
"Oh, of course!" Jessie quickly turned to put the juices away. "Can't believe teenagers don't like juice boxes. Was I too cool for juice boxes when I was thirteen? Seems unreal."
"I never had juice boxes, actually. Went t'a Catholic girl's school and m'grandda packed m'lunch every day," Terry said, still smiling as she hummed herself back up to look at the top shelves again. "D'you have anythin' else pressin' y'need t'get back to? I could use a bit o'help with makin' sure we've got everythin' we need for the holiday."
Jessie was a little entranced by the hovering for a moment. "Oh! No, I was just on drink delivery, I'm totally free to help!"
"Brilliant," Terry grinned down at Jessie. "Want t'come up here with me t'finish checkin' all the supplies? I can hum y'up here, y'just let me know if y'need t'move t'a different section. And then we can sort out the chest freezers?"
She could make Jessie hover? "Sounds great! Just put me where you need me and I'll get to work."
