(Backdated to January 27) The Guthrie siblings take a trip to the grocery store.
"Alright.” Sam said, probably too authoritatively. “Here’s the game plan for today. We’re gonna go get groceries at an actual grocery store. We’re gonna come back, I’m gonna make supper, and we’re gonna have a nice night.”
A nice night meant no fighting. That was the goal at least. But given that Clint would be coming by for dinner…there was probably going to be a fight. Hopefully he could convince Paige and Jay to be on their best behavior while Mel was here.
“Sure, family field trip,” Paige said. “So you know what you’re makin’ or are we figurin’ that out as we go?”
“I can make a desert if you want Sammy,” Mel suggested, before grinning. “Clint’s comin’ over, right? What does he like?”
Sam looked anxiously over towards Jay. "He might, if everyone is okay with that. But he'll eat anything and can't cook himself so he's easily impressed, ain't gotta be somethin' fancy....but I was thinkin' instead of Dollar General....we could shop at an actual 'grocery store.'"
"We heered you the first time about the real grocery store," Jay teased, but he had to admit he was a little excited about the idea of picking out fresh fruit in winter- who cared about all the fancy clothes in the world when you could get strawberries in January- and on his own dime, not feeling guilty for being spoiled on Julia's dime and gas money.
“An’ don’t even mention that place. If I have to think about goin’ to work Tuesday I might just come down with somethin’.” Mel exclaimed, leaning dramatically onto Paige.
Paige accepted Mel leaning on her, but rolled her eyes at the dramatics. “Y’know you’re welcome back anytime. And I still think we should pick a recipe ‘fore goin’ otherwise we might not get everything we need.”
"I mean... Mel loves Hoppin' John? I figure we could get that, maybe some chicken to fry up with it? Simple an' easy?" Sam said, rocking a bit on his heels. "And whatever else looks good? I mean it's new, we oughta try things."
“Works for me. I’ll make up a list, then.” Paige finally pushed Mel off her shoulder.
"C'mon now, Paige, we don't need a list. He all know what's in it," Jay said as he started preparing for seeing folks he knew while out before rememebring that despite Melody being here that here was still New York. He hardly knew anyone to run into and chat with. Mel being here made him miss home more.
Mel flopped to lean onto Jay’s shoulder instead. “Well let’s get goin’ then. Paigey you can make yer list in the car if you want.”
"I'm payin'." Sam said, glancing between his siblings as he grabbed his coat and tugged on a hat. "So y'all just get anythin' you want.....I might get some extra.... thinkin' 'bout makin' up some plates for Alani and Sooraya to thank 'em for everythin'."
Jay pointedly didn't point out that he should be the one paying now- the last thing any of them needed was a fight about money. He'd still yet to broach the topic of Jay sending money home and not Sam. "Three extra plates then? Maybe four- if we're makin' this a shindig I might invite 'Yana."
“Could just feed the whole floor while we’re at it,” Paige teased.
“I mean….. Jay and I kinda already fed the whole mansion after that whole fiasco in town.” Sam said with a shrug. “They wouldn’t be surprised at this point I don’t think.”
“What d’you mean fiasco in town?” Mel asked. Nobody had mentioned anything about anything happening.
"You don't have to worry none about that," Jay said, instinctively shielding Mel from any bad news. "Nothing that bad in the end," it was easy to downplay when he hadn't actually been there.
"We're all okay and that's what matters." Sam said placatingly. "Nothin' to fuss over, 'specially now that it's done passed.....grocery store?"

Mel was slightly lost in the frozen aisle.
They had split up and delegated things, but how was she supposed to find anything when this place was huge? She looked down at the portion of Paige’s list she had in her hand. Black eyed peas, hmmmm. Finally, the legumes revealed themselves to her and she grabbed them out of the case.
Out of the corner of her eye she noticed Sam passing the aisle and chased after him. “Sammy! Wait up!”
Sam immediately paused and waited for Melody. "Findin' everythin' okay? I keep gettin' distracted. Feel like Paigey's gonna yell at me for takin' too long."
Mel held up her various groceries triumphantly. “I’m done. You gotta keep up Sammy,” she teased, but she couldn’t blame him. There were so many options. “What’re you lookin’ for next?”
“I was in charge of rice- which I got- but I’m tryin to find stuff that might be good to have around the suite and just some staples? Yknow? And anythin’ you or the kids might like for you to take home with ya. See anythin ya like?”
“Definitely somethin’ fresh. Crazy how much produce they got here in the middle of winter.”
Paige poked her head around the corner of the aisle. “Hey, there y’all are. Thought that was your voices.” As she walked around the corner to join them, it became apparent that half of Paige’s basket was full of what was needed for their dinner, while the other half was full of premade salads and reheatable dinners. “Did you know they sell ready made meals that are actually good for you?”
Jay trailed behind her, basket mostly filled with produce. "They got strawberries in January!" He said, holding up a package to show Mel.
“Cool!” Mel chirped, mentally going through deserts she could make with fresh fruit. They really were spoiled for choice up here.
“Do we maybe wanna get out of here before we buy more food than we can eat?” Paige was also excited about all the new fresh produce they could try, but she also knew if they bought everything they wanted to try now, it would likely spoil before they got to it.
"Prolly a good idea. Mel did you grab anythin' the kids would like that you could take home with ya? Or I s'pose we could mail 'em a package but I don't want Mama gettin' it afore they do...." Sam said contemplatively.
"Now your just making up reasons to be mad at her," Jay scowled in defense of their mother. "Making Mama out to be some sorta wicked lady..."
Sam shared a look with Paige but didn’t say anything. It wouldn’t do any good to start a fight in the grocery store. Especially when Jay had always been their Mama’s boy. But was it really that wrong of Sam to want to make sure all their siblings got the treats and not just Liz, Jeb, and Lewis? Didn’t Elle and Cissie deserve to feel loved? And more than that- he didn’t want her holding the treats away from the kids unless they gave her his new number. He still had hers- and she had his address, if she really wanted to talk to him she could mail him an apology letter.
It took a lot of effort for Paige to keep her opinion on Lucinda out of this, but she didn’t want to be making a scene in the middle of the store. They had enough drama to deal with at home. “Okay, what if Mel and Jay go find something to surprise the twins with while Sam and I look for Lizzie, Elle, and Jeb? Sound good?”
“Yeah, an’ I can bring it all back so everyone gets something, including Mama,” Mel said, grabbing Jay’s free hand and pulling him in the direction of the sweets aisle. “C’mon Jay.”
Jay squeezed Mel's hand once. "You make sure you get something for you too," he reminded her, giving one more annoyed glance at his older siblings. But he wasn't about to start arguing with them in front of Mel, especially when technically there was nothing to fight about.
