Kevin & Darcy | Catch-up
Feb. 5th, 2024 09:51 am(backdated bc oops I'm forgetful) Darcy's back from Scotland, she's field cleared, and Kevin's got a giant project just waiting to drop in her lap.
"As much as I enjoyed what was basically a semi-vacation, it's really nice to be back home and at work in person," Darcy gave Kevin a wide smile from her spot lounging on the couch in his office. "And in my own bed even. I missed my big, beautiful mound of blankets and pillows and the delightfully grumpy face you make when you think I'm speaking nonsense. Besides, Muir's fucking cold this time of year." There were other things and people she'd missed too, but she'd spoken to some of them while she was gone, and checked in as she could since getting back. And hey, it pushed a whole breakup off for a few days and gave her time to come to grips with her actions in District X.
"Sounds like you had a good vacation. You can drape that blanket you ordered for me on you." Kevin said, looking up from his desk with a smile. "I am about to upend your life, kid. I hope you're ready for it."
"Fuck's sake Boss, it's Monday!" Darcy couldn't put her hands on her hips in this position, but she could–and did–widen her eyes and give him an exaggerated pout before letting out a sigh. "Alright, pour me a shot if you think I'll want one and then lay it on me. Might as well get the upending over with." She wiggled upright, still mostly relaxed but intensely focused.
He walked over to the sidebar, rooting around until finding a bottle of juniper based vodka and pouring her a shot before bringing it over. "Try this." He passed it over and then leaned against his desk. "There's a shit ton of work coming for us and I need you back as soon as possible. Turns out I rely on you for things, it seems."
Darcy sniffed at the shot glass, then tipped it back. "I knew there was a reason I was still doing light work," she teased, warm and fuzzy at Kevin's admission that he relied on her. "But I'm close to good after that consult with Amanda. Thanks again for loaning energy for it, by the way. Still have some weeks of PT to do, but I can wiggle all of my fingers again. Got the all-clear on the abdominal incisions while I was on Muir. Take a seat, don't make me all wound up with your pacing. C'mon, tell me what you're dropping in my lap and then we can talk about a concern I have."
"Fall out from our Death encounter. Clan Akkaba wasn't that much of a threat, it seemed, until these Horsemen showed up and Collins gushed about some world-ending figure following up his shock troops who wiped out over forty thousand innocent people with seemingly no effort. We're already tracking Akkaba activities, and the magic types are looking into the Horseman angle. But... power like this creates ripples, even if it is dormant. So I want you to get creative and put together an analysis profile to scan our intel for... well, anything out of place that might hint to this Nur. I know it is a vague request, but you've spent enough time in that chair to give it a real shot." He said, outlining the challenge project."
"Gosh, just tell me you want me to upgrade my relationship with Lemon to live-in status, Kevin." She stuck her tongue out playfully. "It sounds like a challenge. You know how much I love those. I'll start working a few information streams loose, see what I can tease them into."
"Like I said, I'm asking you to try and track something we can't define yet. Hopefully some of the research the others are doing helps inform it, but for now, this is a fishing expedition I'm trusting to you."
"One of the few types of fishing I'm actually good at. It'll probably just look like tangled sets of yarn at first, but we all want this stopped. I'm confident in our collective ability to combine resources and work together." Darcy grimaced. "Ugh, that sounded so corporate, never tell anyone I said that."
"Synergy wasn't a word that existed in my time. But if it had, we would have used it." Kevin said with a scowl.
"Nope, absolutely not, that word is BANNED unless we are talking about magical energy syncing up. And even then. That word needs a shot. Needs to be shot. Both." She shook her head. "Okay, so project aside. Wade Wilson. Almost the whole fucking shop's compromised, Boss."
"I know. And that weird fucker has completely gone to ground." He rubbed the bridge of his nose for a second. "It's hard to tell Colbert I need to hunt her ex."
"I assume she knows. Doug called me while I was in London to tell me about the note and we talked about it some, so." Darcy shrugged. "I suggested he take a backseat. Not out of the loop, just letting someone else take point on the data. I'd suggest it for her too... except we can't really stop her visions, so we just have to trust that Doug and Amanda will step in if she pushes herself. I don't know about the others, I just know he was X-Force for a time. He worked with some of the younger ones too."
Her eyes took a far away look, flaring neon for a split second before she shook her head. "He's tangled in the threads too, I think. Here, Akkaba. Laurie, so I'm sure Essex would like to get hands on if he hasn't before. I don't like it. Why now to reappear? Who holds the leash?"
"That's part of why I want you on this project. Too many avenues and not enough leads." He said.
"I would say spray me with the hose if I get too time invested, you know how I can be. But no can do, tech is not waterproof. Guess you'll just have to toss me over your shoulder like a sack of potatoes and make both of us leave." Darcy gave him a sunny, shit-eating grin. "At least I can be bribed out of my cave with food and drink."
"The first time you give me intel that applies out of your searches, I promise a full Russian Tea Room experience."
"You bet your tight ass you will. But in the meantime, I know you'll make sure I'm well-stocked in caffeine and protein bars."
"God, it kills me what you eat..." Kevin huffed. "So do well, so I can make you eat properly."
"You know I eat real food. But now that I'm actually using my powers on a regular basis I have to supplement. The dreaded mutant metabolism." She waggled her hand in a so-so motion. "Upsides, downsides. I wouldn't want to go back to ignoring and expanding what I can do."
